Working on swapping in a 2.5gen steering wheel into my 2nd gen. Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like the controls light up with the rest of the interior buttons but do NOT dim like the rest. Can someone with this wheel confirm they light on/off but don't dim.

The lighting on the wheel is part of the same illumination ciruit as all the dash buttons ect. All my buttons light up and I am 99% sure the steering wheel dims with the rest of the system. I can check.

I never dim mine, but the dimmer is built into the cluster. The wheel illlumination signal is on the same line out of the cluster as the rest of the system so it should also dim.

From the wiring diagram it looks like it's fed off the same positive, but instead of the variable negative site (that causes the dimming) it's tied to ground. If you could double check that'd be awesome!

    You sir are 100% correct.

I just went and checked my truck however and steering wheel buttons do dim with the rest of the lights. To the best of my memory it’s because I tapped into the circuit at one of the dash buttons. I wired it in over a year ago now. I am sure I didn’t go straight to ground out of the spiral cable.

Toyota from the factory isolated the steering wheel controls to a hard ground. If you wire your ground into the ground of one of the dash buttons (ILL-) circuit they will dim. If that’s what you want of course.

Cool cool, didn't realize you had modified your wheel. That makes sense. I will try it both ways. Thanks for the help!

I didn’t realize they were not supposed to dim at the time. My truck is an 07 with a full interior swap. The 07 has a RSCA button on the dash the newer trucks don’t. I think I used the existing illumination wire to this button for my steering wheel controls. It was close easy place to tap into

Right on. I have tapped into one of the switches already to power an aftermarket switch illumination so I am planning on tapping into that circuit again. Still waiting on my parts to arrive but trying to gather all the information I need first.
