Salary upper management with 30 direct reports - unfortunately getting in a specific number of hours isn’t the job description any more. Instead, it’s being available to be a therapist, counselor, hand holder, and problem solver whenever any one of those people happens to be working themselves.

Oof. Yeah. I'm not a fan of being in management/salary. I've done it, and I never got paid for how much I worked. I hope you are well compensated.

I'm too agreeable to work a salary job. I wind up staying late to try and solve things. I'd work way too much and then burn out hard.

He's renting it out to an exotic car shop. He'll split the profits. I mean, I could borrow (for free) one of his 12 cars but Im not desperate

Salary is great at times, but I get what you're saying. I see something come in and I run to my laptop to figure it out. Other days, like today- beard trim, lawn mowed, sold the car and worked via mobile

Washed, iron decon and clay barred. Paint is already buttery smooth and the water is beading nicely. Ready for polish tomorrow and then a few coats of wax over the weekend. Will do the interior next weekend…C76FC9F8-2680-42E3-BA82-C21C28F5091F.jpg

This is true. You are playing a different game and you need to adapt to the rules.

They get some extra hours out of me every week, but there are perks on the flip side as well. For instance, there are no “partial” days of PTO - which simply means that if I have to take off for an appointment and spend half the day out of the office, I’m still paid for the whole day. Or if I make a few calls (or deal with a few emails) while I’m on vacation sipping my coffee in the morning before the rest of the family is awake, that’s a day of work and fully paid. Then, when my PTO balance maxes out, I cash in for an extra two-week paycheck and start building it up again. I spent two days in Boston on the front end of a work trip that was 100% paid for (hotel, meals, transportation) without actually doing any company work. Same with a trip to Florida, trips to Phoenix, San Diego, etc. - tack them on to a business trip and get a chance to see some place new.

I’ve kept a very deliberate log that started about 2-1/2 years before I switched to salary of how many hours I worked, how many hours I was paid for, and at what pay rate. The raise I was first given when I moved to salary was equal to a 5% increase over my gross comp the prior year (which was one of my biggest overtime years ever). The first 3-4 months on salary was hard because I still worked the same sort of hours - it was ingrained in me. At some point I got frustrated and went to my boss about it, and that’s when he explained the “PTO clause” for salary employees, and also challenged me to scope a position description to hire the people I needed to fill the holes that were requiring me to work overtime - learn to delegate and lead and not kill myself doing all the work of 2-3 people like I was used to doing. I spent some time reflecting on that, and realizing that I needed to play the game different. It took me about two more months to find the people I needed for support and a few more months to really train and trust them, but by the end of that first year I was able to work less hours than the prior year and my total compensation actually went up because of the cashed in PTO. Each year since then has been less actual hours at work than the prior year (still more than a true clock-punching straight 40/week) and higher comp due to raises, year-end bonuses, and other perks.

    This.
I’ve got to run to one of our other offices tomorrow morning to meet with a few people at 9. I’ll check in with the fabrication shop while I’m there and a few other people I that I need to. By about 12:00 I’ll be scarce - I want to stop at a local family sporting goods store to look for some boots, then swing by a small gun shop to browse the selection and bullshit with owner (we used to work together before he retired). By 2:30 or so I’ll be heading to the house and in weekend mode.

The next week is going to be dry and warm. I’ll probably be polishing the truck during meetings today. Hopefully I don’t flub the mute button.

Took Monday off too. Going to knock out as many spring chores as possible

    Sexy.

Just like the previous body style, Toyota chrome only looks good in blue.

I'm not really a chrome guy, but it does work well with this paint. Still, I want a lot less of it :)
