I agree, I've gotten used to it so it hasn't been an issue for me lately. I imagine it is a re-flash in the making though. I really like the drivetrain otherwise, unlike my brother-in-law who has never liked the transmission in his '19 Tacoma.

the trans programming and mapping in the taco is the worst on any vehicle I have ever driven, person should be fired. I had one for a loaner for a week or more when my fuel pump took a crap, I could not wait to get out of that POS.

That's how he feels as well, I'm surprised he's kept it as long as he has. I think he's always hoped for a factory re-flash or good aftermarket option to retune it. Now I think he's waiting out the bugs in the 3rd Gen Tundra to make the switch for more room.

Is there any chance that the truck thinks it's breaking traction and powers down? My 5.7 has done this before.

No, not in my case anyway. Doesn't matter how little or how much throttle input when it happens. Zero response to throttle input for a couple seconds.

100% true. And what probably will happen at some point, but right now it is a non-issue in their mind.

Guessing they are aware of it, and will adjust the software down the road. Hopefully Kors and myself don't get nailed in the meantime.

There are aftermarket tunes for the 3rd Gen Taco. It think its actually pretty popular cause they do suck so much.

This is exactly how mine is. My dealer claims it is a "known issue" and Toyota is working on a solution now. That is one of the problems mine is in the shop for now. I was just told Friday afternoon that no update is available yet.

Sure seems like a heck of a liability to say it's a known problem yet have no recall or safety warning out on.

It's on my punch list for the 5K check. Throttle lag is consistent when cold and then a sometime thing once warmed up. For sure it's the tune based on linear progression of throttle to pedal input and trans shift points. It can be changed and corrected. The question is will Toyota do it or aftermarket?

    Hello,
Just wanted to chime in as I have joined the forum for this exact reason. Bought a new 2022 Army Green 1794 and when its cold or I take my truck for the first spin there is a Definite lag when acceleration from a stop. I'm hoping if everyone posts on here if there having that issue it will hopefully help get a fix sooner than later. I feel its rather dangerous!!!

    Hey, everyone-

Just want to add my name to the discussion. My only complaints with the truck are the throttle lag and the inability to permanently disable auto start/stop (though I know that’s not really Toyota’s fault). The lag hasn’t put me in harms way yet, but it’s inevitable. Hopefully there is a fix soon. I’m tired of telling passengers “sorry, I’m still getting used to the truck” when I accelerate from a stop sign.

That made me chuckle. Before I fully determined it was the truck, I was like - damn, I feel like I'm learning to drive a stick shift again LOL. I got several, "what the heck" from my wife as we lurch forward from a stop sign. For the first week or so, I thought the gas pedal was just really sensitive.

I have been reading this thread. What you guys are describing is not normal at all.

My Limited has zero throttle lag. The mapping is of course different going from Eco, Normal to Sport. There is some turbo lag in Eco mode. In sport, revs and the turbos spool almost with no turbo lag.

But this is not throttle response lag. If your dealer is telling you that is normal, that is bullshit. This is not how most of these truck perform or are designed, there must be something wrong.

Mine is a 2/11/22 build date now has over 4K miles with zero issues.

Dealers are not saying it's normal. My truck was just in the shop last week with this being one of the problems. They are saying it's a "known issue". Toyota is working on a software update to correct the issue.

My point is that if it were a software issue it would effect all the trucks. Certainly, my truck does not have the issue.

Mine was built 3/23/22. It’s not an issue everytime I stop, but it happens most frequently within the first five minutes after starting the truck. It sounds like an issue a lot of people are having. I don’t think it’s normal, but if enough of us have an issue - they’ll address it. I’m going to talk to the service people when I take mine in for its 5k oil change (I just changed my own at 1,028) - hopefully they’ll have more information by then.

I just made my first payment a few days ago and it wasn’t due til today. My truck now has almost 8300 miles and does this also. My tundra is an sr5 and not sure of the build date.

Also, this doesn’t happen often and only at certain times. Rarely ever from a dead stop but if doing a rolling stop I can usually replicate it on purpose. The only real driveline issue I have right now is an extremely hard shift going from neutral to drive and it’s only done it now about 5-6 times but seems as it’s doing it more often now. Also something I can replicate but of course I definitely don’t try to.

I think its all in the tune and Transmission shift points. Mine has it as well. Most noticed when just started and cold. Then intermittent after it warms up. I also noticed there is some type of pause just before you come to a complete stop allowing transmission to downshift-reset. I also noticed a times it appears to have a throttle response loss.

I don't have the knowledge or skill of a mechanic nor I.T. expert, so I can not hold a debate based on either. I don't believe the software is the software, so to speak. The reason I say this is take the most recent recall, for instance. It was for issues with some back up camera problems. The recall actually said "some". I was on the recall list but have experienced zero issues with the camera. Also, look at the various issues many have had with the infotainment system and registering a key fob or staying logged in vs the guest mode always appearing, connecting phones, etc etc. Some have these issues and they can not be resolved while others, like myself, have not had any issues. I guess there can be glitches or something with the software in some trucks. Again, I could be way off base here, but it is how it appears to me.

On a different topic, the power loss / bogging down with my truck has nothing to do with warming up, hills, or ambient temp as some have reported for their trucks. Mine is completely unpredictable and can not be intentionally duplicated.

When my 12 Tundra was new it did the same thing during rolling stops. I checked the transmission fluid it was very low so I drained and refilled it.... never had it happen again.

When shifting from neutral to drive, make sure you have firmly pressed the brake pedal before doing that. If the brake is not firmly pressed, you will get a hard shift.

Mine does this as well, about half the time but not consistently. Happens most often reversing out of the driveway. When the hard shift into drive occurs, some occurrences can be harder than others and the truck lunges.

Unfortunately, greater pressure to the brake doesn't prevent it in my case. I'm sure to apply full brake and take an extra second now because I'm wary of it causing an accident in parking lots. Appreciate the problem solving input, regardless. Same thought had occurred to me when it started.

I do and I thought that might be the cause also that it was going into gear and then brakes slipped temporarily. Unfortunately not the case. Doesn’t do it going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse. Shift from reverse to neutral and wait a second then if shifts quit hard into drive.

video doesn’t do it justice but here is a quick clip. You can tell by how much the video pans down when I shift and the truck jars me causing my hand, while holding the phone to get a quick video, to point more downward as the truck lunges firmly.

I personally don’t and won’t pay for a throttle manipulation device. I come from a Tacoma where the pedal response was the worst I’ve ever experienced in any vehicle I’ve ever driven and finally tuned my own truck along with many others and still do today. In my experience with other truck owners, many have had various issues with the product on 4Runners and Tacomas. Primarily the Tacoma where it is very well known to throw a brake override malfunction putting the truck into limp mode.

With this said, many more have had great experiences with the product. Sprint booster, on the other hand, I’ve never heard a single complaint from anyone who used it but that could also be due to it being less popular than the pedal commander.
