Ok How bad is the 2022 really, was all set to get one but now not so much

wow, for all the BS you have gone through, Im surprised you havent told them, just keep the damn POS and give me my money back.

I sure hope once you do get it back its smooth sailing, I want to jump in but damn..

 

You hear people say "have them buy it back" quite regularly, but if you look into it, it's a real pain in the ass. I did inquire about that as a future option if problems persist. What I was told by my case manager is they close the case, no further warranty action taken during the process. It is then forwarded to the legal department, who then has 45 days upon receipt to investigate, then 14 days to respond back to me. If they do deem it to qualify, I could possibly be charged for milage, etc so I'd actually lose money. At face value, Toyota seems to want to discourage people from even asking.

My logic is, I really do love the truck and want it to work. If I end up with additional problems once this batch is resolved, I'll probably go through a lemon law attorney. The more I let them try and resolve these issues, the stronger my case is. In Tn, one stipulation is 30 days in the shop in the first year. As of today, I'm at 45 days in service with 3½ months ownership.

Then my other problems, if I did get my money back, there isn't a truck close to this price range at the same level of luxury and features. I don't bad mouth them, but I have zero interest in any other Tundra year. I'd also lose on the tonneau cover and bedside I've installed. I'd hope an attorney could address those concerns if it came to it.

 

I test drive a used 2020 5.7L (30k miles on it) just before getting my 2022, and I would safely say the new ones are much higher quality in every way, in terms of how everything feels and operates. I was going to get the 2020 and wanted to see if the 2022 was "worth it", and it was an obvious choice to me. The 2022 sold me really quick.

The old ones feel like a big rugged but rough truck. They are great. But the new ones feel like a tight smooth rocket yacht with way better technology.

In terms of what that means for "reliability", I don't really care if there are a few first-year model hiccups, but I'm not worried about long-term longevity. These will hold their value really well too.

 

I certainly admire your logical way of looking at things and most of all your patience…chances are I would have been pulling my hair out so much respect.

 

I dunno…I bought my 2015 2 years used and with 10K miles back in 2017…and while it did feel like a much more rugged truck the fit and finish was tight…I didn’t have a squeak or rattle on anything.

Yes…my 22 is light years ahead in tech, luxury and refinements but it has much more QC issues…not big ones in my case but a lot more little “annoyances”.

I do love the 22 though and I am not annoyed enough to go back to the older model…so I am trusting Toyota and time to work out the kinks and the reliability holds up like the previous generations.

I will hang onto my warranty in the meantime

In the big scheme of things, it's just first world problems! I see real suffering everyday and thankfully I'm not one of them. Being able to own a $70,000 truck is a blessing, no matter the problems!

 

I think @boon4376 and I have different definitions of the word quality. Quality, to me, is something working perfectly for an extremely long time with minimal care. No issues. No reasons to revisit the dealer. It’s only been 20 months, but I’ve never gone back. And I don't plan to. Forgot all their names.

The 3rd gen is more refined and more advanced; sure. But to me with what we are seeing at this point it is lower quality. I don’t even think all of it is necessarily Toyota’s fault. Supply issues and a brand new, very advanced/complicated truck do not mix. I do think they are cool. I’m seeing more of them in person. There is a lifted silver TRD Off Road I passed in town that I thought looked great. I’m sure the low end torque is nice; I’d just still pick my truck.

The great thing is, there are Tundras for both of us.

Me too. I paid a lot for all the extras but worth it to me.

I took a 2022 for a test drive recently and wasn’t overly impressed once they told me it would be $63g plus my 2016 Tundra witch is in mint condition. In fact at the dealer a guy asked if i was happy with my new truck lol. I told him a lot happier with my truck than when I came in.

The 2022 drives nice and would have no problem getting the pro but man I can’t justify giving in a perfect reliable truck and pay this kind of money.

 

I would have a difficult justifying any other vehicle if I had a reliable vehicle that is in mint condition (which I do). And it would take a lot to “WOW” me out of my 2020 so I completely understand not being overly impressed. But in reality once all the bugs are worked out I believe the new Tundra is and will continue to be a solid vehicle.

Several family members and friends own 3rd gen Tacomas some with lifts some stock and have reported zero problems like seen on many forums. Out of the 5 3rd gen Tacoma owners I know well, one hates his and the rest would buy another in a heart beat. So I take many complaints with a gain of salt…

And you are a 100% correct in not wanting to spend that kind of money for the new generation. Toyota can only revamp the Tundra to a limit and is it worth the money?? Probably not…

 

Personally if you want a new truck asap I would get a 2.5 gen. Seems like 2.5 gens are the last batch of the legendary 3UR-FE engine so I would grab one of those over the new v6 any day of the week. Good luck!

$63k plus your 2016 Tundra? Not a trade-in to reduce the cost? Are you sure you didn’t misunderstand the salesman?

 

He came from a fully loaded full-size V8 Ram. So it’s purely driving dynamics…

The Pro is over $83g here in Canada plus’s tax putting it close to mid $95g all in.
He was given just over $30g for my 2016. So makes sense but it doesn’t make and sense for me to make a deal.

 

My 2022 1794 has 4000 miles, zero issues big improvement from the 2019 it replaced. Paid msrp plus tax have heard horror stories at ford dealerships but not Toyota on over msrp gouging. Paying current fuel prices I’m liking the far better mileage over the 19, for all around driving I’d say it’s 20% better.

 

Almost 5000 miles and getting ready for its first oil change. First time truck owner and absolutely love it. Only issue I have had so far is the parking brake signal malfunction and the grille shutter malfunction, both of which was fixed with a software update. Knocking on wood so time will tell.
