Let's see 1st gen with Toyota Rims

If you get good quality spacers (Spidertrax, Bora) and install them as per the instructions there isn't really much to worry about if that's your reasoning for not wanting spacers anyway. Later gen 4runner/Tacoma wheels really are the best bang for your buck if you find some at the right price.

 

So about 3 months ago I put some Toytec Boss coil-overs (3") with JBA UCAs. I didn't want to do a spacer lift, as I go into the desert to shoot 2-3 times a month, and some of the holes and slopes in the roads get fairly rugged. My dad just ran stock size 265 70 16 Michelin Defenders for 15 yrs. on this truck when he was alive, because he never really left the pavement. But the tires were almost down to the wear bars, and I spun them more than once while climbing hills.

So when I started looking at tires, I realized that there aren't a lot of all terrain tires for stock 16"x7" wheels in larger 32"-33" diameter sizes. I was originally looking at Nitto Terra Grapplers, but the sale rep told me there were limited tires in 16" and none larger than a 265 75 16 for the stock 7" wide wheels. So I followed the advice in this forum and started watching Craigslist. I found some 2017 Tacoma 17" x 7.5" wheels in 4 star condition, and headed back to Discount Tire. Another member of this forum - Negley6, is running 295 70 17, so I asked them about that size. However, they told me that the Nittos where only available in an E wall in that size, and weighed 65lbs! So he suggested BFGs, but a lot of trucks are running those around here (with good reason), and I wanted something different. So he suggested 285 75 17 Toyo Open Country AT3s. He said they were slightly taller than the size I originally wanted (33.8" vs 33.3"), and they came in a 6-ply wall at 59lbs. So I went home and did some Google researching, and it seems for the most part everyone really likes this tire. Of course with the supply chain thing, I had to wait over a week for them to arrive.

Fit: They rubbed the mud flaps at certain angles right after they installed them. So those came off right away, and I had to fold over the pinch seams and also rework the lower sheet metal slightly. I did some mildly aggressive primitive road driving yesterday, and got some more minor rubbing. So I did a little more wheel well work, and I was able to remount the mud flaps and stop the rubbing (at least for on-road) with some heat gun work. I might still get some rubbing at deeper compression but time will tell. I also still need to change out my 1.25" Spidertrax spacers for some 1.5", as I am getting light frame rub at full lock. So if anyone is looking for some spacers, contact me as I'd like to sell these. They have been on the truck for about 3 weeks.

Off Road: In the limited driving I have done, they seem to grab really good. I drove them down a 45 mph dirt road and they shed rocks well and bite in the turns. When I drove in 4x4 on the primitive roads and hills, I didn't hear any slipping. And when I got out to look at the tracks, I could see clear-cut impressions of the tread.

On Road: Although louder than the Defenders I was surprised they weren't louder considering the aggressive tread. And it almost seems like they have quieted down more over the past 2 days. Overall I think they drive just as well as the defenders with the advantage of rolling more smoothly over imperfections in the road.

Since the diameter is so much larger than stock, I also added a 12 o'clock labs SpeedoDRD ($80), to compensate for the tire circumference - http://shop.12oclocklabs.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=59 . I want to thank whoever mentioned this unit on one of the Tundra forums, as it was an easy solution with minimal soldering on my 2006. The website is setup for motorcycle products, but this is a universal item that does exactly what I needed to correct the speedo (+10.5%). Total time - 30 min.

Sorry about that. I figured it was a stock wheel thread, so didn't get want to get too detailed.

There are a lot of references to "Yellr Box" for speedo correction on Tundra forums since it's plug and play, but it's a bit expensive (Yikes, over twice the price), and at the time I bought mine they didn't have a kit for a 2006.

So, I found the original reference for why I used this particular unit - . And I added a couple of my own pictures for location. The important thing is to get a wiring diagram for your truck, so you know which wire is the speedo. In my case for a 2006 DC it was the violet/white wire (A24) from the "A" plug shown in my picture. Because this device is so small, and you really don't need to access it very often, I tucked it in behind my towing brake control since I already had a hole through the dash there. (That's also where I ended up putting my subwoofer control for the same reason.) I just have to pull it down to access it since there is plenty of wire. Then because it's so light, I just push it back up tight against the dash and so far it's stayed there pretty well.

When I was installing mine, I was too lazy to search for where I had seen the tutorial for this, so I ended up just "winging" it on my own. But it's funny that I ended up using the same 12v wire black/orange (B24) from the "B" plug (your truck may reference it differently), and even the ground location. The only difference is that I solder everything, as I've had crimp connections vibrate or pull loose. And then you have to track down the cause of the failure. The hardest thing about this mod for me was unplugging the gauge cluster and getting it around the steering wheel but I had already done that before when I was installing a new head unit.

It really just boils down to:
take out the guage cluster
find speedo wire/cut speedo wire
blue wire to speedo side/white wire to vehicle side
red to 12v supply/black to ground
program according to YouTube video
re-assemble

I like it. There's a set of these on my local CL and I was curious about them. How does the offset/BS compare on these to our 1GT stock 17" rims? (any spacers required?)

PS - are you running stock tire size on those?

 

The offset/BS is all the same on those wheels, so no differences there. In comparison to the 1GT stock rims, I don't know because my stock rims were those 16-inch grandpa rims. No spacers are required. And as for tires, currently running 265/70/17, so one size larger wheels give me about an extra inch of clearance.

Do like the look, especially in comparison to the stock rims, and I got them for a good deal which is always a plus.

 

I will say this about the stock Toyota rims: I’ve owned a couple different sets of newer Tacoma/4Runner rims, and they’ve had a positive offset, meaning further into the well and under the fender. I’d imagine with larger tires, that they would rub on the frame rail without spacers. Aftermarket off road rims are zero or negative offset, giving more space between tire and frame, pushing the tires further out. The reason I got rid of the Toyota rims is because they were tucked too far under for me. The TRD’s may or may not be different, idk

 

My '02 Tacoma came through with a set just like this.... These will stay on the Tundra for a while as I have other "Mod's" to complete first

I do love the originals but they were just too corroded and missing 3 center caps. Gonna keep them around and maybe try to refinish them one day but for now I'm liking these for not much more than the price of new center caps for the originals

If memory serves me correctly it's a 2" spacer that provides ~1.5" lift up front; no changes for the rear. 275/70 17's picks it up a little as well.

I'm watching your quest for a lift picking up what I can along the way since you're including dbl cab details (much appreciated).

My '04 Access Cab v6/5spd/4wd. 16x7 steelies (from Rock Auto), 265/75 Falken Wildpeaks. No suspension mods/lift whatsoever and no issues to report. Only time I've ever rubbed was when fully cut into a parking spot with 4 people in the cab and a moto in the bed, so definitely not surprising. A whole lotta green, I know...

Hope I don't stir too much hate with my '06 Sequoia SR5 4x4... I put some Toyota TRD rims on them two years ago and still get comments from time to time. Old skool I know, but they do look like business! (Running boards were removed shortly after this picture was taken.)
