Fooling around and experimenting. Looks pretty cool (beefier) with the air dam deployed at 40 mph. It is at the bottom with the square notches in it. Retracts at less than 40 mph.B254FB36-4AAC-4192-AE4C-5423AA2F6639.jpg

And what happens when there is a tire tread in your lane during rush hour with traffic on both sides?
    :anonymous:

It would be pretty sweet if the TSS could sense and raise it but I doubt we are there yet.

How did you get it to come down while being stopped?? Is there some sort of override?

Yes, there is an override which is needed to perform some maintenance. When you turn the truck off you must push up on the wiper “mist” option for two seconds and it will deploy manually, in order to perform maintenance as stated in the owners manual. To reset it you need to turn on the truck and put it into gear and it will return to the home position.

I’m assuming it is installed on all models SR5 and above (but this is just a guess). I did not read that you could disable it, unless Techstream can turn it off. It is supposed to deploy for high speed stability.

Interesting…and good to know if I ever buy a 3rd Gen.

EDIT…it seems fairly open underneath in the video above. What maintenance is Toyota referring to?

I did my 1st oil change without deploying it for maintenance, but .......... let me get this straight wizards of engineering at Toyota:

At 40+MPH I am now going to plow right into that poor opossum/etc, splatter its guts all over the front end and potentially break brings, instead of possibly rolling over the poor thing, without a scratch on him or my truck???

Who will be the 1st to cut this stupid thing off, or otherwise disable it one way or another?
I wish I were kidding, but I'm 100% serious here - how many times have you have a situation where you couldn't stop or swerve to avoid something in time (at speed), and the only choice was to go over that thing (animal/tire/box/you-name-it) hoping for the best.

    -99

    PS:
The first jackass who tells me to drive more carefully or slower gets my airdam lowered over his head...at 40+MPH!
    :p

Just lift your truck and run 37's for more clearance. :D

Seriously though. I'm wandering if I could try removing the Air dam and leaving just the motor in.

This truck is still new, so I'm hoping for a way to disable it in future. There apparently some offroad packages that doesn't come with air dam. I think only the SR5 TRD offroad packages doesn't come with Air Dam right now. Maybe TRD pro too. So a way to simulate that either with flash or some kind of plug in option for the connector once you remove the motor.

Most modern pickups and pickup based SUV’s have lower front air dams to aid in aerodynamic drag reduction to increase MPG’s. At least this one isn’t deployed at low speeds. They do nothing until wind resistance starts to create drag (around 55-60mph). My 2000 model has a lower air dam on it. All my Cheby’s did too. I’m not a fan of over complicated wizz bang tech like powered aero. I’d rather not have one on my truck just from a simplicity standpoint.

think about all the threads on here about shitty MPG’s after leveling (raising the front end). This is a way to lower the front end and direct the airflow around the nose of the truck. It’s possibly good for 1-3mpg depending on speed. On a stock truck.

    I wouldn't expect more than +5%:

You have to keep in mind this is one of many MPG strats integrated into the car.

Can’t complain about fuel economy if you remove the spoiler. Purpose is 100% fuel economy but its active so it can be raised for off-roading. It doesn’t lower if you have H4 or L4 engaged.

I hope there is a way to disable it if need be. I drive logging roads in Maine and easily go over 40 mph. A good bump or something in the road that I normally would clear seems like it would go right through that thing

I’m in full agreement with you here. The fact that my 2015 lacks features that have been added to the the tundra each year after my purchase continually reminds me of why I am happier without these potential areas for failure. Some changes have been bonafide improvements that would have been nice. The list is short though; better head unit and lights, pretty much.

That’s because it only boosts MPGs. Liters/100 kilometer hot fix will be offered in a later update.

5% at your stock configuration. But if you change that like lifting your truck off the ground higher wouldn’t that just cause significant drag instead?

Sure it can offset the gains of the airdam but it doesn't outright prevent the benefit of an airdam.

Lifting creates at least two problems. First it may take the car out of the sweet spot zone; how much a car is from the surface of the road and its effect of MPGs. Lifting outside the zone will typically add more air pressure under the car and may also increase turbulence. By lifting you are also increasing the frontal area of the car which also increases drag.

Ride height's impact on lift and drag:

Probably the same or similar thing that would happen if you were driving a standard height passenger car, like a Corolla or Camry. You're going to hear some noises and likely some damage.

Unfortunately I’ve had the experience on I-10 in Phoenix in a 300ZX. That’s why I drive SUVs and Trucks now (ones that don’t have drop down air dams to appease the EPA). A couple grand in damage from road debris is dumb.

If an air dam is going to prevent you from buying one then I seriously doubt you’ll ever buy a Tundra newer than 2021.

I stated ANOTHER reason, not the only reason.
I drive for a living and I see things daily in the road that would take that thing out.

But you are right about one thing, I seriously doubt I'll ever buy a Tundra newer than 2021.
I'll be considering another brand when it's time to buy another pickup.
The 2022 Tundra is one of the ugliest trucks ever produced.
    Just my 2¢
