Truck back after 2 weeks in shop - here's update for those with same issues

As the title says, just posting a follow up, as I have seen several of these complaints from others in various threads. I figured it'd be easier to hit them all at once, vs trying to track down each one. Maybe we could keep this thread going if people want to post an issue and what was done or how long it took. The intention isn't to bitch and moan, but let others know they aren't an isolated case and what is being done.

Below, when I say "Toyota", I am referring to what Corporate told my local dealer..

Bumps on all four fender flares - ordered new flares, bumps visible on new ones out of the box, definitely not caused by fasteners. Toyota says a new part/design is in the works, do not order additional replacements until advised new ones are available.

Rear window seals - replaced both sides. The new ones look like they seat better. The gap between the ends is roughly 1/8 inch now and the ends actually snap down and don't hang loose.

Power loss / bogging down on acceleration - software update is in the works, will notify when available

Power running boards malfunctioning - I was told there is no other known case of this. They could not duplicate but were shown a video of mine malfunctioning. They did discover a running board error code as well as an over the air update code. They are not sure if the update caused the malfunctioning or possibly corrected it, since it has not re-occurred in a week or two. No further action taken now.

No dimming mirror on passenger side - service manager acknowledged the documentation reflecting the vehicle should be equipped with such. He has forwarded all information to Toyota and my current case manager.

Passenger side badging not staying adhered - replaced with new Platinum badging.

    Disabled seat belt chime
    Disabled fake engine noise

lastly, had some paint issues that were corrected.

.....so, the truck sat in the shop for 2 full weeks so I could get it back and be told to wait for solutions later, lol. I believe I am up to 47 days in the shop since purchasing Jan 27, damn I'm glad I really like this thing!

I can only imagine how frustrating this must be. You bought what is supposed to be a high end truck and got a bag of issues. That sucks. I hope they get it all sorted out. If it were me I would be pushing for a new truck but the laws here allow for that. I don't know the laws in Tennessee.

Not out of the question, I am definitely building a superb lemon law case. It boils down to the fact I happened to get allocated the exact truck I wanted on my first try; I love everything about it. Problems, yes...but as of now, I seem to know my issues. I'd hate to get a new one and have worse problems like leaking or the wind noise issue. For now, I'll stick with the "known" and get it straight. I'm a little aggravated, but love the truck. 100% first world problems, I'm blessed to be able to even have a $70G truck to have problems with.

I was hit by a random blown tire on the highway 2 weeks ago. Took mine in, was told the front left bumper piece, the grill, and something else under the truck needed to be replaced. Thankfully everything came in very quickly except there is apparently a piece on the front of these trucks which holds the grill and the bumper together. Which means until that comes in, my truck isn't finished. It has been delayed 3 times in a week. So here I am...still waiting. I get the whole supply chain problem right now, which doesn't bother me too bad. What I am mainly concerned with is these Toyota dealerships (this is my first Toyota) with have a connected body shop, having such poor communication. Why was I not called back as soon as they noticed that piece was broken and asked, "hey we need to order a piece we didn't know we needed, so would you like for us to call you back when it comes and you can bring your truck back to get it fixed?" Instead of being told it would DEFINITELY be done 4 days ago and here I am, still waiting.

So not only do the 22 tundras look hideous, they are also build poorly? Or do the kinks just need to be worked out? I would probably just go with a 2022 Tacoma if I had to get a new truck and wait for the bugs to be worked out. Lol

Of course how anything looks is subjective...and yes, as usual with pretty much any new generation (or in a lot of cases older ones too), some things need to be out on the road in real life before certain issues pop up.

It is a completely new platform launch. If you want the shiny new platform and none of the problems wait a least a year, ideally 2 for them to work out the small, mass production issues and real world driving.

The 2020 Ram was plagued with problems, the 2015 F150 had problems.

There are issues that arise in full scale mass production all the way down the chain to individual parts that just don’t creep up until you go for it and let people beat on them in the real world.

Ironically, I have never even considered Tundra before this year because I thought they were the ugliest truck made. To me, Toyota has always been way behind the competition in tech and features until now. I like to have the newest of anything I buy and will deal with whatever is associated with owning such.

I do find it odd how many non-gen 3 owners persist in visiting these threads just to voice their meaningless opinions and insult others and their purchases. There's probably a lot to pyschoanalyze there and unpack.

They've spent so many years justifying their purchase to domestic owners they don't know how to accept that Toyota moved on.

You just said you find gen 1 and 2 to be ugly, but have a problem if someone says gen 3 is butt ugly??? They are just opinions, nobody is insulting your purchase.

That was a reply. I have never insulted anyone's anything unsolicited, much less gone to a place (Gen 3 threads) to merely voice an "opinion" to which I know is to merely cause conflict. The point of this thread was to help other Gen 3 owners, clearly stated. You don't own one, want one, or like them....why even click on the thread other than to attempt to cause discontent.

I try my best to act the same from behind a keyboard as I do in person; what a great forum this would be if others did as well. Understandably, douche bags do exist, but I find it hard to believe they all gravitate to one forum.

I think many folks, especially non-gen 3 owners are curious about the new truck and threads like this are genuinely intriguing to them. I came to this forum because I wanted to parse through some genuine experiences of owners and not some youtube shill or "media influencer" whose opinion is bought and paid for via industry media relations. I found this thread very interesting and I agree, to a certain extent that folks have a tendency to rain on the new trucks parade but it's like that with a lot of things out there and internet forums. Can't let it get under your skin.

Thanks again for posting more on your ownership experience.

Thanks for the update Donas. By the way- how'd you get them to disable the seat belt chime? I'd love to get that done too.

Also- what's it sound like in the cab now that the engine sound is disabled?

Disabling seatbelt chime is simple with tech steam. I’ve disabled mine and changed blinker to blink 7 times on light tap for lane changes. 3 just isn’t suitable to me for a lane change

The first time I asked about the seat belt I was told "that's a law suit waiting to happen, no way". I learned on here it was an option via tech stream, so I asked again (to a different person), this time referencing my newly discovered knowledge. I guess it made it harder to deny when I semi knew what I was talking about, LOL. The dealership did say they will only do it for vehicles purchased through them - weird, but ok.

As far as the engine, there is quite a noticeable difference. I had no idea what to expect. There is a big difference in the sound level within the cab; of course, this is primarily when accelerating. The engine can still be heard, but I'd say it's as quiet or quieter than most passenger cars when getting on the gas. If I had to put a description to it, I'd say much quieter and a little "nasally" compared to the fake sound. I was given a Rav4 as a loaner and feared the whole time it was going to sound like that hampster wheel, lol. I've driven about 4 hours since picking it up yesterday, I'm thinking I'm gonna stick with it a while, like it so far. It doesn't turn your Tundra into a minivan, if that is the fear. I asked my wife what she thought, "what do you mean, I can't tell a difference"....lmao, ok dear.

Sorry about your experiences, OP. I truly hope you get it sorted. I see more and more gen 3s in the Nashville area. Good looking trucks that people will warm up to, especially as they see them set up in ways they think are visually better. I think a lot of us Toyota enthusiasts are just frustrated and a bit horrified to see the issues y’all are having. Maybe a lot of it is Covid and supply chains and the hyperconnectivity of social media and Internet forums. I would like to think we all want to see the same old Toyota reliability and long term dependability in all Toyotas, not just our own model and generation.

Here in TN, 30 days in the shop or 4 failed attempts to fix an issue are the requirements for having your truck lemon law’d. I’d hate to lemon law a truck I really like, but I’d also hate even more being on a first name basis with the service manager at my dealer because of a list of issues. Hopefully you get it sorted out and can get to the point where you can truly depend on and enjoy your truck.

    Pretty things
Unfortunate as it may be, we should not be surprised.

I mean, all of the New Tundra advertisements clearly portray the owners engaging in activities which do not necessitate a truck.

These are very expensive and "stylish" accessories now. Hence the removal of equipment which is convenient for trucks which will be used as trucks.

Not to rub salt, but a truck is especially useless to me if it lives in the dealer service department.

All just a continuation of the trend to make trucks less truck like. I can still appreciate Toyota holding off for as long as they did.

I agree with much of this. The thing is, the 3rd gen—the hybrid in particular—is objectively better at towing, has more power on demand at altitude, etc. So, at least in some respects, utility has increased with the new design. But not making a meaningful jump in payload to go along with it precludes it from being a game changer in the half-ton world. I mean, it has more torque than every stock gasser HD truck available. I’d love to see a heavy duty payload package with a GVWR of 8400lb and suspension that is meant for hauling heavy and doesn’t have comfort as its first priority. Given the marketing so far, I’m not holding my breath.

Still, if I don’t need to tow over 8k when it’s time to replace my truck, I’m almost certain to buy one.
