Yes, all of that was covered for free. I wouldn’t take it for gospel though. The dealership employee had a huge folder of images (he wouldn’t let me keep :/) that he used to petition Toyota to pay for the items that were not able to be salvaged. Basically he got them to pay for most things they couldn’t take off and reinstall without destroying.

02 Tundra took it to the dealership on March 21st for frame inspection. They told me I needed a new frame. They had to get approval from Toyota. The dealership called me yesterday (Friday the 25th) said, I had to bring it in again for the regional manager to look at it. Im not sure if this is good or bad. My truck is beautiful. I only have 126573 miles on it. I was told it would NOT pass inspection.

Good luck! I think they'll probably do you right. If not, you may consider waiting 90 days then going to a different dealership.

Well I got the call today. They will be replacing my frame! Since it will be torn apart I am willing to pay for some upgrades. I would like to beef it up a little. Shocks, Struts, Exhaust, and a lift kit? Open for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

If you get 5100's with lift springs on them preassembled from somewhere (not personally sure where) that would be free install. Or another reputable brand someone could recommended. Rear shocks free labor. You'd probably get a steep discount on getting exhaust done as well. Better get started on ordering stuff, the day will be here before you know it.

What about the rest of the suspension like ball joints and control arms? Do they replace those for free labor?

LCA's are almost always or always replaced with frame recall already. I'd say if you had assembled UCA's that you supply I don't see why they wouldn't be. Not a bad time to do brake soft lines either. Lower ball joints stay attached to the spindles I believe so you'd have to supply new although I feel they'd be cheap labor.
Anything being swapped from frame to frame is fair game from what it seems. It saves them the effort of pulling off old potentially rusted parts off of the old frame to transfer over. They just pull new out of the box and install.

Keep in mind I've only dealt with recalls at 1 dealer so any others could be different.

Got the call 3 months later... it's done.

    A couple things to note:

Service manager dropped the info that the extension for this recall ends in May 2022. That's why they've had a big rush or made-to-order frames from Japan, and why the replacements are taking so long.

Kind of annoyed with my dealership because they didn't tell me when the frame replacement work was happening -- I would've talked to them about putting on a new exhaust and suspension. Kinda sneaky there.

Also, they broke my exhaust in a new spot. In the rental for a couple more days while they look at that. They definitely broke it. It's completely disconnected past the muffler. Lol, imagine they put in a new exhaust too.

I think that's fair. I mean we're talking about 20 years after the newest trucks would have been sold.

At this point I'd argue that the vast majority have been repaired or scrapped, and if there are still trucks out there that haven't been back to a dealer in a decade probably won't make it there now.

Hope this isn't true but it wouldn't surprise me.

Frames are made or at least assembled and E-Coated in Owensboro KY.
    20220320_040345.jpg

The guy I bought it from didn't even know the recall existed and he had the truck 5 years.

Service lady at the dealer said it is a safety recall and it can't expire but I'm not sure I believe that.

They technically don't expire but I believe after 10 years they don't necessarily have to cover them for free.

Man, they broke my exhaust but are giving me a hard time about it and trying to get me to go through another muffler place. Shady stuff.

I mean, I get it ... but at the same time, you did get a brand new frame... so I'm a little conflicted.

I know... it's been good for me so far. Still stuck with an exhaust issue that I didn't have to deal with. I should probably just quit while I'm ahead lol

They broke the brake line holder at the base of the firewall driver side and they gave me a hard time about it when I asked for it to be replaced. (Seems like they always break when they do frames). They did replace it but I get your point. At one end I suppose I got a free frame but them just leaving my brake lines rubbing on the frame so they can rub through and not even saying anything about it seems kinda bad too.

It's amazing how cheap these bastards can be.

I broke that same part on @jpink truck last year and Toyota charges like $30 for it. Crazy expensive for a piece of plastic.

Your big mistake was not checking for rust before purchase.

I can't tell from the work description if they did anything, mostly because I don't know what case "#1" and "#2" are on the flowchart referenced.

It reads to me that the 1st job on May 2010 was to check for rust. The 2nd job found rust perforation on part 050CB but none on 050CA. Do you see something in the service history showing what was done in response? Did they coat the frame, or replace the frame?

It's my understanding from reading back in this thread, if the PO opted to have the frame coated, you're screwed, no possibility of replacement. But if you had the frame replaced I suspect you'd also have issues trying to get them to replace again.

Job 1 is dealing with Frame LSC A0F and the 0622CA/CB codes relate to hrs it should take to check. The 72284 OKOK I am unsure of and I'm probably wrong to assume both checks were ok

Job 2 deals with Safety Recall(SSC) related to rear cross member

Still unsure even with codes whether they found rust and did anything about it !

To that point, best bet is probably to run it to a dealership and have the frame inspected STAT, since (supposedly per what another person above heard at dealership) recall is quietly ending this month.

Shifty I did check for rust but how much can you really check when looking at someone’s vehicle. It’s not horrible but def flakey and crusty. I’m just wondering if anyone knows what those 2 postings/ services mean it’s hard to understand at least for me. Those are the only services that i can see relate to rust and frame.

I’ll have to go to the dealer I guess. I plan on calling Monday to see what they can tell me and hope for the best.

How is Toyota and every dealer telling me my 2009 is out of perforation warranty and dealers won't even look at it, and you guys are getting new frames on 20 year old neglected trucks? This whole thing doesn't seem to make any sense

Because your 2009 doesn't have the same frame. The frame recall on the 2000-2003 trucks was initiated due to a NHTSA investigation. This is a recall, not a warranty.

For fun, you can look at the NHTSA complaints for a 2009 Tundra. Not seeing the same complaints there, https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2009/TOYOTA/TUNDRA/4%2520DR/RWD%252FAWD#complaints.

Well I called the dealership by my house and they gave me a number to call. I called the number and then they transferred me/gave me a different number to call (Toyota headquarters brand engagement center). Spoke with her she said that in 2010 it was inspected and coated, then reinspected on December and looks like the coating was done properly or didn’t take so they did it again. She said I’m SOL basically but I asked to file a complaint/reversal on the decision which she’s doing. I’m not holding my breath but figured it was worth a try.

    Sorry, to hear.

Can you share that phone number? I've got a 2001 that is rusted quite badly, perhaps I may be able to squeeze it in for the recall before the month is over. :(

The last number was 1-800-331-4331 -Toyota headquarters brand engagement center. Hope it works for you unlike me I’ll be tackling this myself with rest reformer since i have like 20 cans and then fluid film there on after I guess.

If you want to really know... take a hammer and don't be afraid to give sections a good tap. Any dents mean that the metal has lost it's integrity and it's not just surface rust. That's the method I've settled on after all this. Just doing a visual assessment can be misleading.
