I hate my factory Nav. - am I missing something?

I can only seem to search destinations by address and not in general like city. A lot of times on longer rad trips I just want to head towards a city or town, especially setting the destination while driving. I can also set points of interest but most of them are not current or anywhere I want to go. Using the Nav. is just not intuitive and most times I end up using my phone. If I want to use Waze on my truck then I need to plug in my phone and switch over to it. I hate to say it but the Nav. on my Ford was much better and up to date. And yes I have the most recent maps on the Tundra.

Yeah, it's an archaic navigation system... go aftermarket HU and download Waze... or use your phone... that's what I do too...

Agreed. If your HU has Android Auto just use Waze, Gmaps, or the map program of your choice.
You just need to make sure your HU system has Android Auto. If not you need to install a newer double DIN HU that has it. There are plenty out there. Might cost you $500 or so but it is cheaper than paying Toyota to get the updated maps year after year.

Mine is a 2019 and no android auto. Could I install a 2020 or 2021 HU to have AA and would I need it programmed or would it mess up my truck because of the differences and settings?

ive got a 2019 and put a pioneer 7600 in it. It’s only a million times better and I gave up nothing.

Given how good phone nav and AA is, I would be just as happy if they left nav out of the HU.

Did you lose the ability to adjust settings for the truck? Key fob beep volume. Lighting time out. Instant mpg chart. Ect?

With the maestro rr I was able to retain all the steering wheel controls - and customize them. I can still change all the settings.

I lost the little nav window and the compass on the dash. On the HU I lost all the entune apps - the reminders and the instant mpg.

I gained some gauges on the new HU. Also the one I got supports a second camera that I activate via steering wheel controls. Finally it also has wireless AA and CarPlay. The sound is so so much better.

I have zero regrets on that purchase.

I found a couple posts here about putting a 2020 HU in a - 2019 and it appears to be a very expensive project since the wiring harness is different. I might try to mount my Ipad and use google maps or waze on it.

Thats what I did, I mounted a tablet above the stereo. I'll snap a pic when I get a chance.

The harness for the 20/21 HU was $270. This was for a jbl version with nav. You can pick up the HU and amp pretty cheap in the forum and on Facebook. I did the conversion and really like the unit. I did lose the mpg updated on the unit but still have them in between the gauge cluster.

Thats pretty sweet. I bought my 2019 in November of 2019 after the 2020s came out. I liked being able to have a key which would allow me to make my own keys with techstream and install an aftermarket remote start that wouldn't shut the engine off when opening a door. Obviously no Android auto was the downfall so I went the table route since I already had a tablet with internet. I'd say the big advantage of a nice table is being able to do what ever you want with it while in motion. I have a Tab S4 so it can have multiple windows open at once. Ill run google maps, with my OBD stats of trans and coolent temps, gear and torque converter lock info with Pandora or what ever media I want and I dont get any downfalls of not being able to use certain apps or what ever while in motion. Totally digging bringing the 2020+ stereo down to a lower model though, props to that from someone that used to install aftermarket HUs in every previous vehicle, having a stock head unit from a newer model is a super clean upgrade.

Sounds like you have a nice setup with the tablet. I upgraded from the old headunit with a ‘16 map card so this has been great. It has Waze and google maps, but doesn’t have the additional gauges like you are running. This was my first install and it took me a couple of hours with some troubleshooting (user error) but would be a breeze for someone with a little experience

I tried to use mine today. My phone was acting up so I figured it would be fast and easy. I put in the address and it found something. I drove to that location, out in the middle of a farm field. I figured that I would try searching using the business name. It gave me a different address so I went there, out in the middle of another field. I rebooted my phone and used Waze like I normally would. I found the address and went straight there. I wasted an hour driving around trying to use the totally worthless Entune nav. They actually want to charge people for this shit after their trial period runs out. Not this kid.

Yeah the stock stock on 2019 and under is useless, I have honestly never used it. Being an auto enthusiast when I bought my truck I knew the stock nav would suck compared to Google or waze, which is actually the same now since google bought waze. The downfall to stock navs have always been needing a hardware upgrade via disc or sd card for updated maps and absolutely terrible interface. Having nav on a vehicle was pointless once google maps became mainstream. You have a 2021 though so shouldn't android auto be just as good as your phone?

Mine is a 2021 and it is still worthless. I bet it's worthless on the 2022 but that would be just a wild guess based on the past performance of the prior versions.

So wait, do the 2020+ come with a nav that is not based on your phone like Android auto?

Yeah, it has a totally different nav system than the Android and it totally sucks. You don't need a phone for it to work. My wife has a 2020 4Runner and hers sucks as much as mine. They have weird routing and aren't intuitive. They also put me in some pretty strange places. Anymore we just use Android.

I have a '21 and the nav has been a source of frustration. I do like the chime when it is time to turn, having just moved to a new area it helps quite a bit when in an unfamiliar area.

It has been about 3 mos, forcing myself to stick with it to learn all of the nuance ... but still leaning toward going back to Waze.

I also find that you must type actual addresses in, searching is often a fruitless endeavor.

Hmm...When traveling west (or anywhere long distance for that matter) and don't have an address, is easy as using the map to locate the city, zoom in to the city and continue to zoom into an intersection on the highway or interstate. Select go here or whatever it is called and it maps to that location. Can also do that while moving. Very minor inconvenience in the scheme of things IMO.

I really wish I could find a slide in dash mount for my Tundra like this one that I used to have for my Ford. I also though about some type of flip down hinge as I just do not like the idea of a dash mount where the tablet is above the trucks radio display and in my line of site.

One of the coolest things I gained from swapping my HU was real time temperature monitoring and tire pressure monitoring. No regrets switching from the stock HU, that thing sucked.

I think I am going to buy a Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite tablet to use for navigation. It has GPS, Cell and Wi-Fi and will allow me to do everything I want.

auto harness.com. Depending on the system in your truck, you may be able to order it right off of their website. Since mine was a JBL with navigation I had to send them an email to get started.

You have to buy the amp if you have a JBL. They both work together to manage the audio system.
