Took delivery of my '22 Limited CrewMax a week ago and have some low gear throttle lag. Acceleration surge follows, but not typical turbo behavior (coming from a twin turbo F150). Otherwise very happy with the truck.

Anyone experiencing the same? Wondering if an ECM reset would help. Does the battery disconnect for ~15 minutes still work as in previous gen?

Yes, I and others have posted similar complaints. I can't answer your question though. Some of us have also experienced a bogged down/quick power loss right after the truck gets moving from a stop.....very unnerving when traffic is coming! I have informed my service manager and was shocked he didn't request the vehicle be brought in immediately; sure sounds like a liability to recognize such a complaint and not take action.

I feel the same in Eco mode. Have you tried Sport mode? I think the throttle response and turbo spool is really really quick and responsive in Sport mode, with minimal to no appreciable lag.

Yup and there’s lots of comments on it and even a couple other threads. As far as the reset, I’m not sure it’ll it’s like the others.

Appreciate the feedback received from everyone. Switching to Sport mode has significantly reduced the lag, much better at low speed. Still haven't attempted an ECM/learning reset, but doubtful of its benefit and Sport mode is good enough for now.

I agree that the lag is significant and could be a safety concern. When the truck surges after the lag, can give you (and passengers) a not-so-fun whiplash effect. Hopefully a future update will refine the tuning.

I've noticed the lag also. It almost feels like its a delay in the pedal feedback to the ECM and engine.

Has anyone noticed the down shift lag? When you stomp on the gas on the freeway, even in sport mode, there is a couple second delay rather then the instant downshift and go the previous gen had.

I have the same issue, but are generally always in ECO. I’ll try normal and/or sport mode…thanks for the suggestion!

I drive in Eco mode on the freeway, and Sport on the streets. The truck feels like a different car in Sport mode.

Off-road I feel standard feels the best, although this one I’m still not sure of.

Very apparent, that 'tip in' hesitation when you first hit the throttle. Not as pronounced in sport but still present. Had similar but not as impactful issue on my audi. After market tune got rid of it and smoothed it out but as most here know that creates other issues w/manufacturer

Definitely notice the downshift delay even going WOT to pass. Not sure I notice the lag mentioned here. Is that just pedal tuning?

Unfortunately, sport mode isn't the cure all I had hoped. Same drive this morning, same stop sign, with sport mode engaged, and the lag was just as bad as before. The truck had even warmed up for about 5 minutes in the driveway.

@xc_tc, it's noteworthy that the issue for me seems isolated to stop and go. Very pronounced coming in and out of stop signs around our neighborhood, but don't feel a severe lag with shifts when up to speed. Generally, the transmission feels smooth above a certain speed, maybe 40+ mph.

Your experience is same as mine. The start from a dead stop is where I’d like an improvement. Other than that, loads of power and throttle response is very good. I expect the Hybrid version will address the dead stop throttle lag.

So far, this is the only improvement I’d like. Very impressed with the truck overall.

Would the Pedal Commander improve the low speed response?

Agreed, love everything else about mine. I'm curious about Pedal Commander, but intend to log some miles before making changes, if any. If anyone has installed PC without a tune, would be interested to hear feedback.

My experience with Toyota and pedal commander is flip a coin. I’ve tuned many many Tacomas and now 4Runners and 2nd gen tundras. Issue after issue with the pedal commander and putting truck into limp mode or throwing a brake override malfunction and disabling the vehicle entirely at times needing a trip to the dealer with a tow truck.

If a throttle manipulation device is what you desire, I suggest sprint boost over the pedal commander. Aftermarket tuning will soon be an option but many don’t want that due to worries of warranty issue potential

When you guys say dead stop do you mean completely stopped? I know a lot of people think they stopped for 3 sec at the stop sign but are really just rolling through it.

For me, the situation that the lag/surge happens in is a quick stop or rolling stop at stop signs. Haven't experienced it accelerating from full stop at a light, etc. For that reason, have wondered if the cause is the transmission being between gears.

For me, it’s from completely stopped. Maybe I need to push the pedal a little more aggressively?

In other vehicles, I’ve always been easy on the gas after stopping, but felt like acceleration was smooth, linear. In this case, feels like a lag, then the torque kicks in. Could be a learning curve on my part I guess.

Yeah that makes sense, I’ve noticed this too. If I’m in a hurry and I will through the stops I get this delay/hiccup in acceleration. I figure it’s the transmission shifting down into 1st. If I roll through a bit faster, it won’t shift and it seems it will open the torque converter clutch like the previous gen which gives slightly better acceleration.
For you, maybe the tuning on the Tundra pedal is dull based on how you apply the accelerator pedal. Sounds like you want the throttle to open more when just stepping on the pedal. I’ve had the same feeling in some German cars. I’m fine with the Tundra though. I kind of step on the pedal quickly and don’t really adjust my foot position until I reach cruising speed.

update on the issue - I took my truck in for some repairs today, with the throttle issue being one that was noted (lurching from a stop as well as losing power when accelerating from a stop occasionally). I was told that this is a "known issue" that is being addressed by Toyota. I'm a far cry from a mechanic, so most of this talk goes in one ear and out the other, but I was told they are thinking it may be a programming issue with a sensor and oxygen or something like that.

Great news, appreciate the update. Sounds like a flash of the ECU could improve the issue down the road. Along with some hard upshifts/downshifts in 2nd/3rd gear, has been my only gripe with the truck.

The tuning on these is load based which can cause it to do weird things, especially if you get a boost spike. It will close up the throttle and open wastegates and stuff to try and control boost spikes.

That doesn't seem like reasonable functioning when it hinders me from just starting from a stop at a normal pace, not drag strip style. I have literally lost all throttle response twice while turning across multi-lane roads. I don't see how Toyota can acknowledge such a problem without a warning...recall... something.

I'm actually kind of glad to see this is being acknowledged as an actual issue. I was told it's just a normal turbo delay by a friend, but how severe it is at times had me not believing that. Biggest gripe with the truck, so hoping it 's addressed very soon.

A few days ago I got the Reduced Power CEL, and another CEL for a parking thing, but both went away today somehow... Still bringing it in, and I am going to bring up the throttle lag/power loss. I'll see what info they give me, and update you all.

As for tuning, anyone know if Toyota does any dealership tuning or is it all aftermarket? I would not want to mess with the warranty, but certainly interested is tuning down the road.

    This!
We live on a busy road and I've had a couple slight panics pulling out from our side street to turn left across 4 lanes only to have the nose of the truck poke out and lose ALL throttle response momentarily making the plenty big gap in traffic suddenly way to short! I can reproduce it fairly consistently at this same stop sign too.

Toyota sent the truck home after a few hours, need active CEL's in order to do really anything. I guess I understand that logic, but don't love it.

I brought up the throttle lag when he asked how I liked the truck. I think mine was the first the dealership has seen, so literally got no response after that comment. I think he was asking a personal question about my like since he has a '21 Tundra. I'm going to reach out to the dealership I purchased at because the guy was awesome and I think will ask around and keep me posted on any findings down the road.

Had this happen after dropping my kid off this morning... On a decent slope, going across a lane turning left, trees blocking view of me and other drivers; it was so slow to get me out into the other lane it was fairly terrifying. Anyone speeding through and I would certainly get smoked from either direction.

I seem to be able to avoid this issue by making sure to come to a complete stop before pulling out into the road. So now I do that even when it is entirely clear and safe to turn. Also, I only consistently notice it when the motor and trans are cold, generally at the first stop.

    Good info, thanks for sharing.
It's almost like the engine needs to have time to reset to a lower gear to be able to power/accelerate properly (I switched to "manual" shifting after really briefly getting to a stop sign, and it showed 5th gear).

It still seems like something that should be adjusted on Toyota's end, but it honestly isn't a big enough issue yet to make them do or acknowledge anything.
