So I turned that LTA lane babysitting feature on again today to give it another try. During my travels there was an obstacle on my right I wanted to steer clear of so I moved towards the double yellow line. The truck faught me on that I could feel a bit of resistance. After that I immediately turned it off again never to be user again.I think I can navigate my truck myself thank you.

Anyway , my question is what if that was a person or someone’s pet or something and the truck faught me enough that I hit it?

I don’t know the laws in all 50 states but in PA the driver MUST be in control at all times. Someone could easily open up litigation over that and probably have not too hard of a time proving it.

Anyway, it was un-nerving not to be able to steer for that split second.

    Pretty things
Saw a video recently of Testla's auto pilot system attempt to steer into a cyclist in order to execute a turn.

Will be interesting to see how the lawyers handle the imminent influx of cases involving a driver who was "not driving".

Seems very practical for driver to be in control of the vehicle at all times. Someone has to be responsible for these sleek and sexy batering rams. Tho being responsible for ones actions is apparently an antiquated notion.

The lane assist has very clear disclaimers that would prevent any such lawsuit; no matter how hyperbolic the claim of "danger" somebody made. The system will offer resistance, yes, but it will not overpower a driver. If somebody were to be overpowered by LTA they don't have enough strength to be operating a vehicle in the first place. It's also something that is meant to be turned off in anything but the best driving conditions, and an attentive driver should be able to see a potential obstacle ahead, turn it off, navigate said obstacle, and turn it back on. There's no safety issue here unless an idiot is driving, and that isn't Toyota's fault.

My wife just purchased a new Subaru, and it does something very similar w/a steering assist protocol as well. It has the same warnings within the info screens, owners manual, etc. I agree w/you 100%. The manufacturers are providing all the necessary disclaimers and warnings to mitigate their responsibility as this next generation of vehicles are put through 'real world' testing protocols by consumers.

I find it funny how the pendulum continues to swing back and forth with driver attention, distraction, assistance and entertainment. Driver inattention starts leading to heightened deaths and serious accidents while people are texting and driving, programming GPS while driving, etc... So, huge push this past decade to enact laws punishing drivers who text and drive or drive distracted.

Now, manufacturers are battling to the be the first, best and biggest of infotainment screens (that will inherently draw drivers' attention away from the road); to have the most driver "assist" function (self steering, self braking, self parking), etc. All of which leaves the driver doing less of what they should be doing and more of what we learned early on causes unnecessary fatalities. Hell, my wife's Subaru has 3 info screens to monitor.

Manufacturers keep giving the people what they want (technology and AI) and then people bitch when they relinquish their own responsibilities to that technology and things go wrong... Doesn't matter if it's your vehicle, your banking/financial info, things in your home, your phone, etc...
