its going to be different with each dealer. my dealer since i have bought the last 13 or so toyota's in my sig from them over the years. so i know the inner workings better than 99% of the customers dealing with "dealerdaily" when putting in an allocation reserve request.

it also is dependent on what region you are in. the regional port may still have it locked down. my region didnt open up until mid april.

so I guess what I’m asking is, are dealerships actually able to order/request specific builds on the tundra?

my understanding is Toyota is not accepting requests/orders. It’s all allocated and dealers get what they get. That’s what I’m told so I’m wondering if my dealership is giving me the run around.

Allocations are mostly out of their control from what I understand, but they don't have to keep them. Once they get the list they can swap and trade amongst themselves regionally I think.

    2022 Tundra Allocation Reserve Request.jpg

above is an example of a allocation reserve request ^^^^^

its not an order per se. toyota builds vehicles by way of computer allocation system. the computer determines what vehicle is made on the assembly line based on previous sales (not sure if its quarterly or yearly). based on the previous sales it allocates certain models are built more than other models on the assembly line.

ie: out of 100 tundra's being built, it may allocate 30 to be limited, 20 be SR5, 5 be SR, 15 be Platinum, 20 be 1794, 10 be TRD.

a dealer puts in an allocation reserve request into dealer daily. once you select the packages and/or options and color, they have to hit a button to verify that selection is valid for the regional port that dealer is part of. it will either validate it or reject it per the regional port rules.

the first reserve request is consider the primary request. you can enter multiple requests after the first one but the caveat is that if one of your secondary or tertiary requests gets built before your primary they may fulfill that reserve request and ignore the other selections. its a gamble if you are willing to take it. on my request i only put in 1 request and i am willing to wait for that vehicle to be built. the more odd ball the config the least likely it will be build on the assembly line.

right now i know platinum's are mostly being built with the AQ package code (HUD), but my regional port requires that if you order the AQ package, you also must select the RB package code (powered running boards). the system wont validate the request if both are not checked in the allocation reserve request screen (my screenshot).

in the last few weeks that i have been tracking across 7-8 dealers in ND and MN, about the last 10-15 tundra platinum's i have seen, only 1 has not had the AQ package.

once a vehicle is built at the assembly line, it is then allocated to a regional port (and there is roughly 13 regional ports in the usa. its a weighted system to certain configs are predominate to certain regions. more 2wd are sent south compared to 4wd being sent to snow states, etc.

once a regional port is selected by the computer it will look at allocation reserve requests in that regional port and pick one that is either an exact match to the config or as close to any that are not an exact match. then its tagged for that dealer on the request.

before the system opened up, toyota usa determined which dealer got what configurations, but since its now open dealer can preference what they want. another caveat is that depending on how the dealer did in previous quarters to meet toyota selling quota's, dealers get weighted on who gets what first and how many reserve request they are allowed to enter into dealer daily. another snag is if your dealer is considered a primary or secondary dealer. primary are toyota exclusive dealer, secondary are dealers that sell other brands along side toyota (they considered a 2nd rate toyota dealer so they are lower on the totem pole for allocations)

big cities dealers you will see they will have 5-10 tundras in transit or on the lot. at one point the dealer about 100 miles away had 9 tundra's on his lot last month and now only has 1. once dealer in MN has currently 9 tundra's in transit but all are reserved (sold)

hopefully that helps explain it in a nutshell. there is a lot more nuances that i didnt go into detail

edit: i could explain the transport process and port installed items process also.

on the allocation reserve request screen (which is not shown), certain "post production" items are installed at the regional port (PIO, port installed option). this is your best option for add-ons as the people putting these items on have high proficiency and quality of install on these items compared to a dealer (also know as DIO, dealer installed option). remember the person at the dealer may have only installed and item once or a very few times, so your vehicle will be a test mule for them to learn.

on transporting a vehicle from the factory to the dealer.

once its built it will be loaded to a rail car and shipped to a regional port. once at a regional port any PIO will be installed and/or stop sale issues fixed prior to being loaded to a transport truck. once its on a transport truck you will not get any updates via dealer daily until it hits the dealer. rail updates are more likely.

the dealer can go into dealer daily and pull up a timeline status screen of where and what milestones it is suppose to hit in the build/transport phase.

this is our status on our 2018 tundra we put in our reserve request.

plant/port process means it been thru the assembly line and passed QC and loaded onto a rail car (usa) or ship (port for japan)
vessel depart/arrival is for shipments coming from japan (lexus, 4runner, land cruiser)
rail departure is when it left the factory on the rail car or in the case of shipments from japan, the shipping port on rail transport
rail arrival is the arrival at the regional port
shipment to dealer is when its put on a transport truck to the dealer

railcar location just tells you where it is located while in transit and what date/location "temple, tx"

edit: just wanted to add, the turkey day screwed the delivery by alot. it didnt end up arriving at the dealer until dec-3 and we picked it up at 6pm on dec-4. our original request was put into dealer daily back on oct-14 i think.

That makes a lot of sense. I appreciate you taking your time to type that out and explaining in detail. That makes sense.

A part of me is wondering if it’s worth it for me to pay $57k (msrp) for my SR5, when a limited with OR package is cheaper than that and will have more features. The problem is my dealer said in our region, they just haven’t seen a lot of limited with OR allocated here. But looking on YouTube and online, it seems like majority of tundras are limited with OR package lol. I’m also in a time crunch cause I sold my 21 4Runner trd pro in December and in my state, I only have 180 days to purchase a new vehicle to use my old vehicle sale price as a sales tax credit (matters to me because that’s about $6k in sales tax I’ll be saving). I waited months for the 1794 with TRD OR with no luck so I settled for whatever I could get while I wait for trd pro allocations which I hope will be ramping up soon!

side note, what are your thoughts on Midnight black metallic vs white on the SR5?

color is person subjective, but for me and my location, dark colors especially black are hard to keep clean due to ...

    1. we always have wind (dust/dirt blown)
    2. we are in winter mode from oct to april (we just had a 36" snow fall on 12-april)
    3. the darker the color the more it looks dirty
    4. silver is the most neutral color for hiding dirt. (i have gone over a yr between washes when i had a subaru legacy 3.6R, before they went cvt mode)
    5. certain toyota white colors have no clear coat, be careful

Yeah I kind of regret choosing black. My dealer gave me the option of white or black. I never owned a black vehicle before so at the time I felt like changing it up a bit. But I’m realizing I should’ve chose white, haha. I’ve never felt more indecisive lol.

Ps: That’s brave going a year without a wash, on any color haha. My ocd would kick in. I actually find detailing my car to be therapeutic sometimes. But only during the summers

I have owned black vehicles before and I know it’s a terrible idea but I love the way this truck looks in black. I think it might be worth it.

I didnt order it. I shopped HARD! I found VINs and back ended into dealerships where the VINs were going. I was on a waiting list in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia. As soon as I found this one, they gave me the timeframe (4 weeks out) I said OK, fine with the wait and went to...Florida to drop off and pick up.

here is a list of regional ports. if you are in GST region (gulf states toyota) / SET region (southeast toyota), you do not follow toyota usa rules. you will be bound to the rules of the family that owns the franchise in those regions since they technically existed prior to toyota usa being established in the usa. they also own the financial arm for those regions. TFS (toyota financial services) and the GST/SET finance arm are independent of each other which also means, extended warranty contracts bought from GST/SET do not work at toyota usa dealerships from what i remember. (someone correct me if i am wrong)

It came in early. Got to see it and take it for a drive. Closing the deal on Monday. They had better fill that 32 gallon tank...:). All the body panel gaps were good except on the headlights, one side was wider than the other, but not bad. The GM's new tundra, a limited, was also the same. I forgot to look at the payload numbers..oh well.

Picked up my ‘22 Platinum 4x4 today. 2 hr drive to the dealer and a 3.5 hr drive home to avoid huge dealer markups at my local dealers. Worth it. Truck is awesome!

Congratulations, beautiful truck! I love that MGM color on the Platinum. Still waiting (2 months now) for my Wind Chill Pearl 1794 but that MGM in Platinum trim was a VERY close personal 2nd choice.

That’s how long I waited. Put deposit down on 3/8 on an allocation that someone else dropped their deposit on (got lucky), then picked up yesterday 5/6. Hopefully yours comes soon!

The Canadian limited has led drl and you can flick the amber drl on with the tail lights. I like the amber drl tacomas have, this dose not have it.

You can count the dealers on one hand in CA that don’t have ADM (sell at MSRP). I only found Longo Toyota, Toyota Sunnyvale, Elk Grove Toyota, One Toyota of Oakland, and maybe a couple others. But, they all have long waitlists.
