Based on the cluster gauge I got 8mpg heading to T2S and smashing the gas pedal. I figured I’d get better gas mileage on the way home if I took the cooler and 2 propane tanks off the rack and put it in the bed for better “aerodynamics” Got 8mpg on the way home  Guess I’m not stuffing the bed and cab anymore if it doesn’t matter :anonymous:

Me neither. Apparently they are that new. Not much selection though for 17s. Most of their 5x150s are on 18s and 20s.

Preparations for the Rubicon Trail run has begun.

Installed a mount on the rack for the 2 jerry gas cans.
    upload_2022-5-7_10-40-5.jpg

Now I'm mocking up a platform so that I can mount my propane tanks inside the cab. I want the heavy items low and this will help keep the weight distribution more balanced. It's going to be cold, wet, muddy, and I expect there to be a lot of snow still.

Do you normally bring 4 tanks of pro? What all do you run off of those?

No I don't. We will be out there for 4 nights, wheeling it slow. Not planning to burn wood so I have my firebox that I will be blasting to keep us warm with 2-3 foot flames. Thinking 1 tank will last maybe 4-5 hours (I actually need to do a burn rate test in the backyard to see how long it actually lasts). Will also use it for buddy heaters and cooking.

Have you posted your firebox? Is it just one of the circular jobbies?
Also, it sounds like you need to try out the diesel heater life! No condensation, no tip over hazard, no burnt dog hair smell because your dog got to close to it…… sips on fuel as well. I had mine in Sedona and I ran it full bore and maybe used 2 gallons the entire time.

It’s an ammo can style pit, thing is a mini flame thrower in a box. I like big camp fires :D
    https://fireanytime.com/lavaboxes/p/painted-tabletop

Do the diesel heaters function as a fire pit and can it be used to cook?

They do not, but if you get a fancy one, a water heat exchanger can be incorporated.

great write up and supplement to the Big3/4 thread. Question for you on your bypass and the alt-s/GM diode.

I recently installed an AGM battery, and a GM style resistor that keeps the 5A fuse in place. I had trouble following your write up in relation to the function of this fuse with your #3 wire alterations.

Am I correct in assuming because these fuses are still getting power from your battery connection, through the resistor, the ECU is still sensing a drop in voltages and therefore is still sending ‘corrected’ instructions to the alternator via a separate connector/plug?

I want to be sure when I tackle this Big3 upgrade here in the coming weeks i don’t need to remove this GM style diode if i follow your wiring setup and return to a stock style fuse.

Probably a silly question. I just wasn’t sure of removing the ‘fuse box’ loop caused any complications, or simplifications in charging an AGM.

Correct. I now have an AGM for my primary battery and the GM diode. When the battery needs charging the voltage reading sits ~14.5 volts and will back off (voltage decreases) when battery is fully topped off or if the temperature increases. I recently witnessed this during an 11 hour drive. Battery voltage was at 14.5v for the first few hours, then once I dropped down into a desert region, where the outside temperature increased, I noticed my voltage drop down to 14.2v.

For me, it only makes sense if you install an aftermarket alternator with higher output.
