10 years and you're choosing now to finish it? Could have picked a cheaper time. LOL. Looks good though. :)

That Sheetrock is not going anywhere!
    That’s a lot of screws.

I like the cute little dot of mud on each screw head though.
That had to be time consuming.

    nice work!

The good news, it that drywall hasn’t gone nucking futs in price. YET. The 1/2” plywood on the lower 4’ has been there for the last nine years, thank goodness.

That's good. Almost $100 per sheet for plywood now. They can fuck right off. 2 plywood mills in my town too...

Yeah these manufacturers aren’t taking advantage of a situation at all.

Yards here are full of lumber, yet, the store will tell you there’s a shortage and that’s why prices are higher.

Just like gas… under $100 a barrel, but the petro folks need record profits, so the gas stays high to the end user.

Yep. I won't be buying plywood for the forseeable future. I need to build a deck this summer and I'm seriously looking at building the frame out of steel. Pricing isn't that far out.

    Which is insane but true.
It’s almost cheaper to get a metal roof over shingles in some areas.

the drawback to framing with metal is your screw cost.
    It can add up quickly.

    A welded metal stud deck.
    Should be solid.

The deck screws are the most expensive.
You’ll need a wing-tek or you’ll have to predrill your decking.

I just want to see this thing when you’re done.

I can almost see it now. Rhino-lined (in a lighter colour) checker-plate for decking, and expanded metal stair treads. A nice aluminum / glass railing…

If I actually go the steel route, you better believe there will be pictures along with a full side by side cost comparison of steel vs wood. If the steel really is that much cheaper, I'll find all the mills' social media and post it all over there as well.

The biggest issues with building out of steel are getting sign off from the city codes office and cutting the pieces to length nicely. The first shouldn't be too much of a problem. The second is a matter of getting my hands on a bandsaw. Might have to buy one which can get expensive. Selling it after the project finishes is an option, but tools are like guns. I don't sell them.

I think I'd stick with composite deck boards, simply because metal gets too hot in summer. Even rhino-lined, it'd be a touch warm on the tootsies.

Large enough to cut 4"x4" square tubing. I just did a quick look and I can actually find something for under $1000 that should work...

Don’t overlook a dry cut blade for a mitre saw. Those things are incredible for low-production use.

About $80 for a 10”, rated for up to 1/4”. Unless your deck is gonna be huge (giggity), one blade should be enough.

I used a 7 1/2” in my 8 1/2” sliding mitre saw when I built my quad trailer, it’s still going strong.

Interesting. Didn't think about using a mitre saw. I have a cut off saw and a Milwaukee metal cutting circular saw. The tubing I would use likely wouldn't be more than 3/16" thick.

Yeah, 315+ days of sun per year. :D

That said, my deck is on the north side of the house, so is actually going to be in shade for much of the year.

    Use a Chop saw.
Even a chop saw with a diamond blade.
Band saw can be tedious when making multiple similar cuts.

A rental shop is your friend.

The only drawback to using a nice miter saw is the debris.
Cutting metal will destroy a mitre saw.

Use a cheap one if you use one.

I have a nearly 10 year old black&decker that cuts nothing but metal studs with that same blade.
I wouldn’t even consider trying to use it for something else.
The little metal shards embed themselves into everything.

Lots of options for sure. I'll be looking over the price comparison of wood vs steel. The Woman is hanging out with friend whose husband owns a contracting company, so just for giggles she's going to ask about a ballpark price to build the deck. We're pretty busy with the newborn, so if I can have someone build the deck in a week for not much more than I can do it myself in a couple months it may be worth it to hire the work out. Less satisfaction in doing it that way though.

I’m sure your looking for something heavy duty, but Milwaukee makes a decent porta-band with a 5” throat. I’m sure they make some sort of table attachment for it

This one popped up in my quick search. King is a decent brand. Not HD or shop level, but solid prosumer stuff.
