Why are most of the issues reported on higher trims? I’m glad I haven’t had anything happen to mine but this is discouraging especially for the cost!!

In general higher trims (with most manufacturers not just Toyota) has got more options and complicated systems that are liable to break…chalk it up to more complicated programming, integration, new/experimental, whatever.

However on these trucks they seem to be issues on base systems that are included in all trim levels…hope this stuff is just anomalies.

1st year issues are more normal than anything but Quality issues and Toyota used to never go in the same sentence until now.

Keeping my fingers crossed things start trending up as I do LOVE the truck but it is disheartening to see folks (no matter how few) with so much issues.

I’ve been thinking same thing. I feel for the guys having issues, and my luck could very well change any minute, but 1450 miles in and I’m very happy with my loaded SR5.

Not saying mine is perfect…For a while I felt a throttle lag from dead stop, but even that has improved greatly with a few more miles. Guess the truck was “learning” my driving habits. The only real issue I have is the rear window seals gap and a creaky front seat. The seat is improving with age, so I suspect the softex backside is rubbing and breaking in.

Really hoping Toyota takes care of the issues affecting the current owners, and applies the fix to manufacturing moving forward.

Depending on the state Lemon Law cases can also be made based on total time out of service in the first year. Most states are 30 days total in the shop.

Since the OP had turbo issues pretty early I’ll bet his truck might have exceeded that in the first shop visit.

I was/am considering the refresh one that was just released.

not sure what I’m going to do yet until I test drive one but right now I’m running out of faith for Toyota for the first time ever really , the vast array of issues just makes me think it’s just too much to fix.

It’s not even evident there won’t be long term turbo problems as more miles rack up, I’ve been waiting to see some clear build months but we haven’t got there yet, plus wind noise , seals, leaking sunroofs , electric gremlins , power shit off trying to get onto road, and on and on.

I wonder if they made it too dependent on software and can’t get it all right

I think Ford, RAM, and Nissan have better reliability than Toyota at this point. All those platforms have been out for a while so they’ve had sometime to work out some of the bigger kinks. Toyota caught up powertrain, tech and feature wise but in turn took a few steps back in reliability. Toyota will get it right eventually but it might be better to wait until year 3 or their mid cycle refresh. Seems like a long while away and if I had to buy a truck right now I’d put my faith into the other brands. Never thought I’d say that honestly.

Its too bad that Toyota didn’t incrementally update the truck over the last 15+ years instead of just doing it all at once in one giant hail mary.

i am guessing that is the problem. They literally changed every single aspect of the truck in one go.

Another reason to never buy a first year re design…..glad you and you’re family are ok. I’d get rid of it personally.

It seems like the Toyota team wanted to design a full-size truck that appealed to Americans who are used to the "Big 3" offerings... and that seems to have included the lack of quality control and many trips to the dealer.

Curious to hear back from the OP on what Toyota has to do to fix this problem.

Me too..... I think the issue was mechanic (human) failure, not the vehicle.

Definitely sounds like a dealer/mechanic error. Its just a standard hydraulic system thats used in hundreds of thousands/millions of other vehicles.

This makes me think of when I read yelp reviews of nice restaurants. If you sort Nobu reviews by 1 star youll think its the worst restaurant in the world. Then you realize theyre a few dozen reviews out of tens of thousands of positive ones.

Im curious how many people were ready to buy a 22’ and didnt because of posts on here. People on car forums LOVE to say theyre not buying when they never had any intention in the first place. Its every new car that comes out. Its like me saying “Ya im going to pass on the new SF90 Stradale. I think it fell flat”.

Heard alot of these worries whenever the 5.7l came out and started dropping valves. Toyota will figure it out and recall the trucks that have issues. Their brand is built too heavily on reliability to do otherwise. That is my $.02 anyway.

This is absolutely insane. Glad you and the kids are ok. Completely unacceptable from Toyota. Id have them buy it back if i were in your shoes. Sad to see these issues in such a highly anticipated truck.

Thank you for your service. You are very brave to beta test the new model, so that we can all safely upgrade three years later.

If I was BUYING something right now, I'd BUY Ford or Dodge instead of the new Tundra. We've been BUYING Toyotas since '79.

Why? The brakes on these trucks is a simple, tried and true hydraulic braking system. It's a very simple design that works just fine when humans install and do everything correctly. I'd be willing to bet this is an issue the dealership caused and not something wrong with the truck. I'm sure the dealership won't admit that, but I'd be willing to be that's the case.

He cant anymore unless he reported it and the dealership said they couldn’t replicate it so they couldn’t fix it and then told him in writing its ok to drive.

Seiously OP, unless they give you a written notice that its good to drive don’t drive it. You could crash and if the other party has a decent lawyer they can destroy you for negligence. Its more likely that they’ll go after the dealership or Toyota, but you’re an easy target. If you have the dealership “good to drive it” notice you have a seriously good defense.

Legal stuff aside, what if your family lost a member. Then what? This needs immediate remedial.

What's the price of the pickup, 70,000 dollars? At the price people pay for these trucks, vehicle should be flawless! This isn't some 600 dollar toy..

I think all the companies not just toyota have finally found the limit of the rolling computer on wheels experiment that started in the 2000s. At first the computer management was a good thing , ls motors :) , but they have finally added so much technical shit , to what should be a majority mechanical item, that the complexity of these systems has finally caught up to them. The tail has started wagging the dog. Add in a pandemic and worker/ parts / vehicle shortage and a rush to produce as fast as possible to put inventory out there, and you see the results.

I will stick with the small chance that Tundra isn't as good as it used to be vs the known giant piles that Ford/GM/Chevy/Dodge/Nissan is confirmed to be over decades. Toyota = constant improvement. While it sucks this truck had both Waste Gate failure and a parking brake issue, the third issue is a human error from the repair of the parking brake. I can tell you from experience, senior techs in the dealer duck warranty work like herpes. All this warranty work on our new trucks will go to younger/newer techs while the experienced guys will be doing the profitable work like customer pay brakes or 120k services.

If you financed it for 84 months @ 2.99%, it would be $924.71.

That's 80 bucks shy of my mortgage, WITH escrow.
