I took my 07 Crewmax to the mountains (Big Bear) for the first time since I got it last year. I usually drive coupes and love slamming the windy roads up the mountain but I was scared sh*tless doing this up and down those roads with the truck. Obviously I can't drive it like a coupe but how fast are yall usually comfortable driving down windy mountain roads? Had a lot of turns signed for 20-30. I saw lots of other trucks and vans that seemed to have no problem hitting these fast around 40+ but I feel so much of a shift of gravity during these turns that I only went 5-8 above signage. Let a lot of people pass me whenever I could find a place to turn into.

Do yall think its safe to hit these turns faster? I'm still trying to get used to driving the truck.

When's the last time the front end was serviced? Blown shocks, worn suspension/sway bar bushings could have severe adverse effects same with tire pressure. Normally going up to BB, we're passing people. Good job using the turn outs, not enough folks do!

You know what, I think you are onto something and I feel stupid for forgetting this. I hit a huge dip and bottomed out my right side on 3N14, screwed up my alignment. Then an hour later I got a piece of metal stuck in one of my front tires. Patched it quick but I think that tire had about 5 psi less than it should have. Both of these were probably factors...

That’s one of the things about the Tundra, it just doesn’t handle as well as a lot of other vehicles, even other trucks. Despite my Tundra having tires that are more highway oriented (the stock Michelins), my old 2500HD with its Duratracs easily outhandles it in the corners. What was pedestrian in the windy canyon roads here in the old Chevy turns white knuckle in the Tundra.

    Damn. I appreciate the wisdom.

Once I swap the suspension and tires out soon, I'm going to give it another go but I am not expecting a big change.

I live in the mountains. Safe is a relative term. We have a lot of deer in the mountains. Nothing like coming around a corner into a herd of deer with your foot in it. We have people come up here in sports cars, motorcycles, pickups, off road SUVs and I see medivac flying up here at least once a week. Nothing like a small sports car or a motorcycle hitting an elk to make for an exciting thread on NextDoor.

Sounds like your truck might need some work. It all depends on what kind of shape your struts, shocks, springs and bushings are on your truck. How good is the frame? Is it rusted out? I have no problem hitting a 35MPH curve at 55 MPH with my truck but I have new Fox 2.5s all around. I wouldn't drive my 97 F250 like that.

I am 99% confident that the previous owner has not touched the struts, shocks, springs and bushings ever since they bought it in 07. The frame is immaculate though. I will inspect the bushings tomorrow morning. I appreciate the help

I am working on saving enough to replace the shocks, springs, and UCAs with some new wheels. I just started getting into working on my cars myself to save money. If I were to get a new suspension to install, struts, shocks and springs are all included in that right?

The suspension could include a lot of things but that would be a real good start.

That would be a real good start. Where are you at?

If you are going to do any leveling then this thread would be a good start.

Socal/LA county. The plan was to go 3/1 with King 2.0 Coilovers and get some Fuels with +15 or +20

When I first got my 2020 it was very intimidating size wise. Coming from a 08 Tacoma. Took about a month before the cornering trust was there. Now it's like no big deal to just dive right in. My new problem is trusting my new FJ Cruiser with its short wheelbase. Man that thing is twitchy. Could be your suspension or your lack of trust.

Once you get your suspension squared away OP, a rear sway bar would be highly beneficial. I find it makes a significant difference, handling wise, in the type of driving your describing. It’s definitely a large truck an took a little getting use to even with several years of commercial truck experience and using family members full-sizes every once in a while.

However it’s simply not nimble and neither is any other 1/2 ton I have ever driven. Nature of the beast I guess. Unfortunately you just have to drive accordingly knowing you not going to get to a destination as quickly. But luckily I have a RAV4 to take when it’s more convenient.

Start with a rear sway bar & you will be amazed! It’s probably the cheapest mod with the biggest benefit I’ve done.
