I know it has been discussed in some other threads but I thought it deserves its own thread since a lot of us move to 17"s at some point.

Tundras have big calipers and you will run into that issue if you decide to swap to 17"s and when balancing, the weights can be too close to the calipers.

Anyways, pictures welcomed and what is the best position for the weights as well as type of weights being used ? closer to the spokes or away from them ? any issues in mud or rocks/sand ?

I would assume the weights should be positioned closer to the front of the rim vs the rear?

Though, when you think about it, you wouldn't be able to find the "best position" for the weights since it all depends on where the balance machine finds the void for the wheel/tire.

yes that's correct. The KO2s I have right now took a lot of weights to get balanced properly and it's 18" wheel so I'm wondering if it would cause more issues on a 17" since less room now.

Dynamic balance, one near the spokes and one near the inner lip. Spoke side will be close, but single layer should work no problem. If you need you double layer you may need new balancer or different tire.

Does anyone just use balance beads?

I have 17s and when I got my STT pros they double stacked the weights, I heard them flying off on my way home from the shop haha it sounded like I was being shot at. I said F it, I'll see how it does. 20k miles later and all I get is a steering wheel shake above 85mph which I hardly ever go that fast

I used it for about 3 weeks, had it re-balanced with hammer and tape weights.

For such a great tire KO2s sure are notoriously bad for balancing.
As far as wheel weights, I don't think it matters where you put 'em on an 18" wheel. On a 17 you just need to put 'em where the calipers won't remove them usually to the inside of the rim. Depending on the wheel and the inside of the wheel face/spokes I believe there's a little clearance for weights if the wheel contours allow. Just don't leave the tire shop w/o checking 'cause the installers get it wrong frequently.

I haven't read anything good about beads. Since I air down frequently those things scare me, last thing I need is a bead/beads clogging a valve stem.
