Hey guys, I know there’s a lot of members here who have recently bought new vehicles and wanted to throw this out there to get some feedback. It’s been my recent experience that new vehicles on dealer lots have multiple dealer installed options that the dealer is refusing to remove or discount. These are the rip-off products like nitrogen filled tires, pinstripes, clear floor mats etc. all for crazy prices between 2k and 3k per vehicle. Now if the vehicle is already on the lot and has the equipment installed I can almost see the dealer’s side as the work has already been performed however I’m dealing with a dealership that is wanting to charge me for the dealer installed options prior to the vehicle arriving. When I say charge I mean they say I have no choice in whether they install this garbage on the vehicle when it arrives. I feel like I have limited leverage in this position since they will certainly get some sucker to pay for this if I walk away. Any suggestions?

well you just answered your own question. You probably wont get them to take it off. Either talk to customer care, or try to be chill with the manager and ask to not get it. Thats if you really need the truck. If you’re not desperate for the truck just wait. Another one will come soon for less.

Walk away. Something better will come along. Don’t let the process become emotional, and remember it's a depreciating asset.

When I bought my '18 I did most of my negotiation online with the dealer. The truck had the OEM steel wheels. When I went to pick it up they slipped some XD or whatever brand wheels (turned out one had a different offset than the others and it effected alignment) and they tried to negotiate 2k more for them. I knew they didn't cost that much and told them to put the old wheels back on. That's when the fun started, back and forth. About that time one of the other dealers contacted me about the truck I was talking to them about. I showed them the text, "I can leave right now, go to Easley and get the same damn truck. Whatchagonnado?"

Bad thing is today, we don't have that power seeing how the market is.

As others have said. Walk away.

At least it’s better than straight adm. These “protection” packages are just a way of dealers to make money without saying market adjustment.

Contact your state’s attorney generals office of consumer protection. Let them know what you’re finding. See if they can do anything. Remember they work for you, and can help in matters like this.

Thats ridiculous. Its YOUR vehicle and if you don’t want that extra crap than theres no way they can can force you to it have installed. If they say its their policy blah blah blah then go to another dealer.

Luckily my local dealer doesn’t force this garbage on their customers. I ask them not to even put their dealership name placard or license plate frame on the vehicles I’ve bought from them, and they don’t. They don’t even question me why I don’t want it.

Like others have said, make the deal and if they don’t want to do nothing for you…walk. When we were in the market for a 4Runner, we found the one we wanted. At the dealership they didn’t want to come off the price of 31k (had about 4K padding). Later on that day I contacted the internet sales department and purchased through them for 26,900. Go figure.

Now days besides a house or a full tank of fuel, this will be a rather large purchase. Get exactly what you want.

When I was shopping for my current truck it took 5 months of shopping and walking away. Hell, I even purchased a truck that was never delivered since the dealership double sold a truck.

Just like @Wixo said. Another one will come along.
I drove to Indiana from New Mexico to get a good deal because my local stealership was trying to rip me off and the deal was so good. Most salesmen are Internet savvy now so use that to your advantage and shop around.

Straight up take control of the situation and tell them you know all to well they are full of crap and there is no law being broken if you don't buy the package. My truck had similar when I bought it, however I demanded the cost be removed and it was promptly deducted. Sounds like your letting them run the show, that is terrible. I advise you to learn about dealer holdbacks as well. That is like a rebate provided to the dealer when the vehicle sells. Hidden profit many are not aware of.

You don't have to buy off the dealer's lot. They can order one for you. If you know you're going to wait anyway, and you know you're already going to be paying the sticker price, order the one you want and wait. Toyota won't build it to order, but the next one that gets built with the options you want will be yours.

A sketchy dealer might refuse, since their markup on those dealer installed options is significant; but you'll be able to find a dealership that'll do business with you. You're in DFW - - Toyota of Plano did this for me. I waited 3 months (Ordered November '19, so ymmv). It came out of the factory with everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. Neither port nor dealer touched it.

This is not a case for the AG. It’s a dealer selling a car with its own dealer options. Buy it or don’t, no consumer protection issue.

Your best bet is to find another dealer. If you don’t buy with the add ons someone will.

It just blows my mind that they don’t even have the vehicle and are insisting on installing these junk add ons.

A friend of mine wanted a new Civic R. He had negotiated the price, when it came time to complete the transaction they added 7500 in BS 99.9% he did not want. They said oh well, he bought a Tesla.

Since he got the Tesla he has driven 1000 miles at an electrical cost under 60.00. I'd say he got the last laugh.

Be patient, and get what you want. My 3 Toyota dealers in town are actually having inventory of multiple models now on the lot not pre-sold. I'm talking Corollas, RAV4s, Highlanders, Camrys, 4Runners, Tacomas, Venzas, and a few vans. The Tundras, Corolla Cross, and Sequoias are not far behind.

Which dealership? I have had good dealings with the Burleson Toyota. Toyota of Fort Worth used to be pretty criminal and I'll never go back, but I hear they are doing better.

With pinstripes, I'd assume Freeman Toyota in Arlington.
