honestly I don’t drink enough bourbon to compare it to anything, some of the true connoisseurs may be able to give you a good comparison.

What the hell do you guys do to feel ok spending $500+ on an alcohol run? I must be cheap and/or poor cause I have a hard time spending over $100 when I want 1 or 2 bottles.

To be fair I have only spent over $500 on a single alcohol purchase once. (This doesn't count at the bar or club.. when I was younger I took a refinery job in a different state and when we had turnarounds I would make insane overtime and finish up a 240 hour work month with a bar visit with friends.. that came out over $500 a couple times).

I have a lot of the heavily marked up bottled in my cupboard but I search to find them at retail without price gouging. Not always easy.

When I do find something that normally gets marked up available at retail price I get as much of it as I can.

Just the thread I was looking for.
We Brits, as a rule, aren’t huge Bourbon drinkers, which is hardly surprising as our pubs don’t often hold more than JD and Jim Beam which gets mixed with Coke and is generally consumed by the old sots and kids who don’t know any better, so I cut my teeth on Scotch single malts.
Can’t drink Speyside malts as they give me raging reflux issues but for some reason I’m ok with the Islay and island malts.
I’m a firm believer in the old adage ‘when in Rome…’ so am acquainting myself with the varied range of bourbons that there is to be had, who knew! The variety is staggering and I’m often stumped as to what to get when heading to the liquor stores. I hate to think that I’m missing out so try never to have the same one twice. That may be about to change as I’ve recently discovered Legent….

Pictured is my current stock ( not including the ones that I’m too embarrassed to show…).

I’m a bit of a whisky snob so have to admit that the Welsh whisky was one my daughter brought over for me last year but it’s not too grim.
I try never to be out of Caol Ila and have recently found it locally at a very reasonabe price, considering the usual prices of single malts over here…
The jury is still out for the last bottle, but to be fair I’ve only recently cracked it open.

I’m a firm believer in the aforementioned advice a couple of posts up of opening up flavors with just a hint of cold water, it works with most grain alcohol and is a must with higher ABV brands.

Well... Back in the day (before I retired) I'd not even bat an eye at dropping $$$ for something high end that I've been wanting to try. But, I was able to do that by spending that money out of my OT budget. For me, I never lived beyond my comfortable 'base salary' means, and everything beyond that that was earned through OT or call-out, etc. went into our "play" budget.

So, essentially, the extra $40-$45k I made each year went toward travel, home upgrades, hobbies and sometimes liquor.

However, high end or $500 shopping trips weren't the norm. I'd find some really well balanced whiskies, depending on my current genre (bourbon, rye, Irish, etc.), and they were my go to sipping whiskies. The really high end stuff was meant to treat or occasionally share w/friends.

My all-time favorites are as follows: Irish: Middleton Very Rare; Bourbon: Poor Man's Pappy (equal parts of Weller Antique and Weller Special Reserve); Rye: Van Winkle Family Reserve or Sazerac 18yr Barrel Strength (but for different reasons); etc...

Problem is now the $129 bottle of Middleton is $250, when you can find it; Weller's Antique, Special Reserve and Blanton's have all gone from about $50/bottle to $100+; and my favorite ryes are almost impossible to find and when you do they are running them at black market pricing $100 Pappy Rye is generally on the shelf at $500+... I won't may outrageous trendy mark ups on my whiskeys, just like I won't do it on my trucks! Darn hipsters started blogging and trending about bourbons a few years back, and now some of my favorites have become unicorns to find and when you do find them they are 3-5 times retail pricing.

However, over the years I've found some really smooth, great tasking whiskeys that are "almost as good as my favorites" and definitely a way better value, such as Elijah Craig, Eagle Rare (when you find at retail), etc....

In the end, some folks spend their money on lifts and 37s; some spend it on ammo; some on gambling or hookers and blow; others well....

Heck just tell the wife or justify it to yourself by using this logic. A bottle of fine whiskey will generally last longer than a box of ammunition and rarely does it exceed the cost of a monthly Costco shopping trip:hattip:

I just got back from doing part of the KY bourbon trail. We went to Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Evan Williams and Stitzel-Weller. All four were great and I enjoyed it even though I don't drink bourbon.

Like the Michter’s bourbon so figured the rye was worth a try. The Taylor’s I blame on you guys, I’ve never had it, but it seems to be popular around here.

    Here ya go...

    https://qualityliquorstore.com/sazerac-taylor-single-barrel/

I've used this place numerous times; Competitive pricing, super fast shipping and reliable packaging... I believe they currently have 9 bottles of Taylor in stock!

I saw 2 bottles just this morning, of all the BT products I have tried I have no like for the Colonel Taylor. Tried it a few times even at the distillery and nothing.

My brother visited the JD distillery last week and brought me this. It's better than regular Jack, similar but not as good as Barrel Proof, good sipper I suppose for 94 proof.

Thanks for posting this - that is the only JD I have easier access to. I will wait for the barrell proof.

Going to Arizona next month, should be able to get into a few finds.

Both this and the JD double mellowed are pretty decent for their price point in my opinion.

I've been trying to find some Wild Turkey Rare Breed but no luck. =(

Randomly stopped by a store fairly local to me only to find Chris Morris signing Derby bottles. Gotta love living in Bourbon Country. Guess this bottle will be a shelf queen. Resized_20220427_195427(1).jpg Resized_20220427_195433(3).jpg

The earlier post made me want to break out the Yellowstone and give it another shot. Been in the cupboard almost 2 years. It's actually better than I remember it - maybe due to being opened and sitting for awhile.
