Does anyone know how to remove the mirror caps on 3rd gens?
I've pull in all directions and nothing seems to get any movement at all.

How hard are you pulling? I'm sure they will pop off. First time is usually the hardest

I agree, they'll eventually will, but I'm trying to make sure that I know in which direction to pull before applying more force.

Just pull. The inner part will get hung up. Use a pry tool if your fancy.

Stand in front of the mirror (non reflective side) and pull in that direction. Start with the outer edge.

I wouldn’t suggest just “pulling it”. Having done many different mirrors, I work on rental vehicles and replace damaged mirror all time, the tabs will most likely break. I use to break the caps all time by just pulling on it. Now I save the cover and replace just the mirror assembly so it doesn’t have to go to paint.

Proper way is to remove the glass and then release the tabs to remove the cover.

Pulling it worked! It's the colored cap, not the glass.

Stand behind and pull. The majority of force applied where my fingers are in the pic. It took longer to unbox/unwrap the new caps than to remove & reinstall black ones. (Purchased from parts.toyota.com $130 for set)

One side came off easy for me and the other was a bitchhhhhh. I kept slowlyyyy pulling then frustration set in and sure enough broke lower clips on the cap. For people wondering the clips that actually hold it are on the bottom. The top half kinda just slides in. Lucky the clips that break are on the pair you pull from lol. My new matte black ones look amazing. I have a set of chrome one broke and one not if anyone is looking they could still be used lol. Also have the tailgate handle. I know no one wants chrome I’m just throwing it out there lol. Here’s a pic in case it helps someone not do what I did. You see my finger pointing to one good clip on left and the broken one on right. If I was to do it again I would pull right where baldilocks said to to release it and then use a small pry tool on the bottom to pop the 2 clips out. Lesson learned! Man I’m good at busting clips lol

I just replaced mine and it was extremely tough to pull the cap off. Felt like I was going to rip off the entire mirror. I don’t recommend pulling from the outside… It will make it easier to get started but it will most likely snap your tabs (ask me how I know…). The better way, which I did on the 2nd mirror, was to start on the inside (closest to the window) and pop the first clip. Then pull the outside portion to get the edges done. Then pull straight back to get the remaining tabs out. I’d recommend using some kind of pry tool to get the first clip started but it’s really hard to wedge in there… another thing I’d recommend is maybe putting tape on the plastic base so it doesn’t scratch like it did on mine…
