Here's the deal :

I have a Toyota dealer somewhat near me (*2.5 hours away*) that I went to in late February. I looked at a 1794 that day that was significantly rough but had a decent price for it.
I declined but they did drive my trade-in and made notes, etc.

My current car has been bullet-proof : 2018 Subaru Outback Premium bought new 4 years ago TODAY.!
I have 152,000 sMiles on it and all fluids and etc have been noted in my "book" which I take care of for anything I spend on that vehicle. The book goes with the sale/trade and it really REALLY enhances the value of my vehicles...plus I am way anal about upkeep and maintenance.

So dealer has a different Tundra now - a CERTIFIED Dark Gray 2018 4x4 Limited, loaded with leather, heated seats, sunroof, all the nanny stuff along with in /out LED's, also Ziebart'ed in and out, TRD off road Pkg, 48000 miles, one owner, small tonneau cover, good tires on 18" rims. Note : I have not seen it yet as I am in Iowa at the moment.

Has it for sale for $44,400.

So I get with them online/email and ask my trade (**which they already know about it**) against that Tundra.

Hear are the numbers :

my Outback and $29600 done, out the door.

Thoughts...?

Run to it -- or run away from it.?

(BTW : they are giving me $17000 for my really nice Outback which on the trip here to Iowa got me 34mpg before fuel fill-up and 36mpg the final 170 miles. I do love this Subie...)

I'd imagine the Outback in this market is worth much more than that, but you have booked it or found comps?

And what's the motivating factor to get out of your Subaru? It sounds like a killer car to me. Off the cuff, it's hard to see how this makes sense -- unless you need to tow, or whatever the Tundra can do that the Subaru simply cannot. 34 mpg in a well-maintained, not yet old car, sounds great to me.

 

If you were in WA or OR you'd get top dollar for that Outback.

 

152,000 Miles on the outback will drive down the value. Other than that I'm not sure why they have you at 17k.

 

My dealer offered me $4,000 trade for my 2000 4Runner SR5 with 164,500 miles on it towards my 2021 Tundra SR5 TRD. I declined and sold it in less than one day on Craig’s list for $12,500. I put on very limited miles so poor mileage does not hit me as hard as some folks. Tundra has much better ride. Obviously much more power than my old 4Runner so I am very happy with my choice. If you drive a lot, consider what 13 - 15 mpg will do to your pocket book. I’m pro Tundra, but that is a choice for you to make.

 

I know this market is crazy, but KBB has that truck at $38k. I paid less that $44k for my 2018 limited brand new. Have you tried to negotiate more - bring down their price and raise your trade in? I think they think they have you cause you’ve already been there.

 

I had the same Gen 4Runner. That is the vehicle I kick myself over selling.

 

I’d get more for the Subaru I have the same ride but half the miles. I wouldn’t take less than 24k for mine in todays market. Get another dealer to compete and go back and forth have them battle over the best deal until one backs out that’s how I buy all my new cars it works great.

 

This is what NADA is giving me for your car. In the NE ohio market at least. I chose the premium with standard options for the premium trim.

Maybe try and sell the subaru privately and go from there with the tundra.

 

Get the real value from your financial institution. Armed with that number, dealers can't argue with you at all because it's the same info they use.

 

Same. Had a 2000 Limited that was the best vehicle I ever owned. Only sold it because we were having our 3rd child. Miss that thing...

 

Unless you need functionality that the Outback cannot provide, keep it. As reliable as Tundras are, I doubt you will get maintenance records for that one, at least not at the level you have maintained.

 

Apparently some sources are starting to cut values of used cars because they see an economic situation occurring in 3 -6 months and they don't want to be bag holding on used cars they paid top dollar for. So trade ins at dealers may have that data "priced in" and they give you a lower value. Can always check by putting it in on Carvana, Vroom, CarMax and see what those come back with.

To be honest, if you don't need a truck right now, I'd probably wait a bit and see what shakes out. Could be a non-issue and prices continue to be above average, or situations could change and prices fall. Interest rates are trending up though, so if you're financing, keep that in mind. Sometimes doing nothing isn't actually a bad thing in uncertain times, though.

Also, being you live in the midwest (you mentioned Iowa...) I'm not sure I'd want a ziebarted truck myself if it's that rubberized stuff. It can trap water under the coating and then cause issues with rust that you can't see until it's too late.

 

As I mentioned ^^^ up there I am in Iowa at the moment and won't even see that Tundra until late next week. I have not talked with them there about this "deal" yet...other than trading emails.

If it's a want, I'd wait. Economy shrank in Q1 and the S+P 500 is down 14% since Jan. Interest rates are climbing and we are fighting a proxy war with Russia. Things are in motion and prices will change IMO.
