Wheel Help! Rock Warriors, BFD's, Something Else?

Hello all. I need you opinions on a wheel choice that I've narrowed down to two, possibly three very different wheel styles. I keep going back and forth between them and it's driving my wife crazy. So, hopefully you guys can help. A quick backstory first.

Right now I have the stock TRD wheels with LT275/75 R18 Cooper XLT AT3 E load rated tires. I mainly got them because I tow a 6500 lb camper 5-6 weekends per year. I also love the aggressive look. The thing is, the other 99% of my driving is city/highway, so they're a little rough. I also have noticed a slight loss in power/MPG's/braking due to the weight of them. In an effort to drop some of the weight, I purchased a set of used Rock Warrior wheels that weigh much less than the TRD's. However, being 17's, I need new tires. To drop the most weight while still having the best ride/load handling, the C load BFG's fit the bill. But, in today's climate, they're tough to find. I convinced myself I was going to go this route and started rehabbing the Rock Warrior's. Here's one almost finished and I still have to do the other 3. I got the idea from a guy on the Land Cruiser forum ih8mud.com

Around the same time (February), I contacted Dustin at FN wheels about the BFD's which style I love as well. The BFD's weigh about the same as the Rock Warriors', but I'd be able to keep my tires as they're 18's. Dustin said the Gunmetal BFD's are now back in stock and I'd be grandfathered into the old price as they are going up with the new stock.

I am also looking at the Method 705's, but those aren't even available and the price went up astronomically, so they're a distant third.

So basically, I need to shit or get off the pot as they say. I don't do much off roading and just tow a handful times per year. The offset of the BFD's (+18mm) is about as much as I'd like to go. I only plan on leveling the front later, no plans for a lift. Any opinions welcome. Thanks!! Here's a pic of my truck as it sits.

 

Check out the Black Rhino rotary forged models for some more light weight options and further indecision. Ha. Although they may stick out further than what you're looking for.

It's all a matter of personal preference. If it were me, I'd really consider keeping the Rock Warrior wheels if you're staying at a 275/70ish size (moving from 18s to 17s will mean smaller tires). They're very pretty wheels, it looks like you're doing a standup job refurbishing them. I know the Toyo Open Country ATIII comes in a 285/75/17 (33.9"tall, 11.3" wide) Load Range C (59 pounds per) which aren't too far off from your 275/70/18 Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT (57 pounds per). There are some pretty good looking AT tread designs out there, if you want more comfort you might have to consider going to an All-Season or more standard use road tire.

Thank you, Sir! I love how they're turning out. Guess I have to do some more tire research. I was only leaning towards the BFG 285/70/17 because they're 51 lbs per. We'll see...

Currently Running 285/70/17 load range E KO2's. Great tires and since you tow I would go with the load range E. Costco has a decent price on them as well.

 

I looked earlier today at E's on Costco. They were in stock, now they're not lol. That was fast...

I didn’t see anything about a preferred offset. Trail4runner is running a RRW RR7 and RR6 group buy. Mbgram also has very affordable Methos 316’s in 17” for $200 or under.

And they are doing 110 off of 4 right now. Added bonus. Also they were out of stock when I checked online. When I walked in to Costco they were able to order them anyway. And if you want to go a little larger KO's also come in 285/75/17 which is 33.9" I think!

 

Methods are pretty much on every truck. If it was me I would go with the Rock Warriors. Less out there and looks good after you cleaned them up. Is a C load sufficient for towing?

 

keep the RW wheels and get some BFG KO2s E load from costco.
They refresh the stock multiple times a day. Just gotta keep checking.

I mentioned earlier that the max I wanted to go was around the +18 of the BFD's. The RRW's look like they're 0. They are gorgeous, though! And the group buy price is crazy!

 

Did you go with 70 or 75? Have any pics?

 

Went with 285/70 17. Now wishing I went with the 75’s. Still looks good though.

So, I decided to stick with the Rock Warriors after all. The rareness of them and the fact they're OE as well as all of your input tipped the scales in their favor. I did some more tire research and went with Ridge Grapplers in LT285/70 R17. Absolutely love the look!! They're actually the same weight as the Cooper's they replaced. Amazon had the best price by far and the Discount Tire by me matched it and gave me a break on install as well. Highly recommend them! Thanks again everyone for the input and I'll report back on how it's all working out!
