2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

That 2.7 is so good I almost wish they offered in the Tremor. Almost.

 

The TTV6 is offered in the 300 series overseas. The engine debuted there before the Tundra was released. They do have a 3.3L diesel as well though. Honestly, spending time in the Lexus GX group where a bunch of Australians hang out, none of them seem all that positive on the Toyota diesels. The same way people here drool over their diesels, I think they drool over our V8's.

Like I said, the LC chassis is every bit as stout as the Tundras and is using the same driveline. Your concern about the durability of the transmission because its used in a "crossover" makes no sense. The Land Cruiser 200 and 300's are stout vehicles. Just cause the LX600 has a body kit and plush interior doesnt make it a slouch.

 

I'm just speculating, I don't know what they rate those transmissions for. But Toyota doesn't give much in the way of real technical information on it. I know in the videos I've seen with their engineers they'll make statements like "our goal with this engine was to increase life by 50% while reducing cost by xx%" but that's meaningless to me. What is the expected life of this engine in other applications? What is that transmission's rated torque capacity? Is it way overbuilt for the other vehicles it's in? It could be. But who knows? Also the 300 series isn't being abused overseas by anyone except Saudi princes and oil barons. They aren't being overlanded or abused in the same way as the J70 which does NOT use a twin turbo v6.

 

Nuts were probably never installed. Likely friction and the grace of God held it together for a short time.

Can anyone see if there's nut marks on the axle tube flange?

 

Almost 1400 mi and a little over a month in on the Powerboost. One road trip, 2 hours each way. Plenty of
Stop and go with a number of 45-60 minute highway trips.

So far best mileage is a tank of over 19 mpg that had some stop and go and hard driving in it. Next one was 18. It had a 2 hour highway trip in it but also plenty of
Immature antics.

Have not seen the computer which seems to be about .2 off from hand calculations drop below 18 mixed with occasional aggressive acceleration. I think over 20 would be easy if I could be mature for a tank.

I feel like I could go all day in these sport cloth seats without stopping to stretch which I couldn’t say for my 09 Crewmax or
2016 Challenger RT plus with leather and adjustable height lumbar. Simple 8 and 10 way power adjustable front seats but they are firm right where they need to be with the contours in all the right places. My wife would let me hear it if she wasn’t happy after those 2 hours and she had nothing to say about the seats. You can’t raise or lower the height of the lumbar support but it feels perfect where it is.

This is my first extensive experience with the latest Sync system. We have several older ones in our fleet at work. One thing I have to say hands down, comparing it to Uconnect in my 2016 Dodge and the system in the wife’s 2015 Acura which she doesn’t even try to use anymore. This thing’s ability to comprehend what you’re asking of it the first time around in plain English without having to speak to it like it’s a 2 year old is amazing. I can throw out any point of interest or address in a casual plain English sentence and the Nav will send me on my way on the first try. That continues to surprise and impress us both every time we try it.

Only complaints I can come up with:

No easy way to seek out consecutive channels or change sources using the steering wheel controls, can only go through presets for every source. But there are a bunch of preset slots.

TTV6 and electric motor combo are torquey everywhere in the rev range. Like a freight train in almost every situation. Pulls like a beast but does it so smoothly it doesn’t feel as violent as it is. Only place where I miss my 5.7 is calling for a burst of acceleration at 75-plus. That 6 speed would drop a couple gears and I’d still get a kick in the back. The 3.5 powertrain feels like it has less left to give just in that scenario.

Loving the pro power on board. Can power several house essentials in an outage. Tested the bed outlets and they worked fine. On a road trip I can charge my work and personal phones on the front USBs. Wife can charge hers on the front household outlet. That’s before even counting charging capabilities for the rear.


I think the ride is firmer on broken pavement than my Crewmax was. Wife loves it and thinks it’s softer. Handles like a sports car tho. Heavy steering and minimal body roll in the twisties. Ride is composed on huge intermittent bumps but I feel it
Gets jigglier than the Tundra on roads with lots of small ones. At 113000 miles it could also be that my Crewmax’s shocks were tired and Its slight advantage in that scenario was due to tired shocks that weren’t as firm as new. I don’t remember too well what the Tundra drove like on pock parked pavement in 2009 or 2010.


Shame on Ford for not giving me the fold down rear seat middle arm rest that my 13 yr old truck that cost 33k new had. I had it on an SR5, I think Ford wants you to check the Lariat box to get it.

6.5 ft bed is manageable with the 360
Cameras and bird’s eye camera view except for scenarios where I miss a turn and want to flip a quick u turn at the next intersection. In situations where I could barely make it in one turn with the Crewmax I End up Watching on coming traffic approach on green while backing up and cutting the wheel again. I have to learn to plan that better so the wife doesn’t sit there giving me an earful one day.

I am generally very happy so far, although I have not ridden in a ‘22 Tundra for comparison. No glaring discovery that has led to buyer’s remorse. Most impressive thing to me is easily getting 4-5 mpg better than I used to average on the Crewmax without having to be super gentle at all times for an entire tank.

 

Was at a dealership 1 hour north of Toronto for an oil change.
While waiting, there was a 22 White limited waiting for prep in back.
Its a good color for the style I think.
I was able to spend alot of time looking at the bed.
Visually I was surprised how much shorter the tailgate is over my 18. It was locked so I couldn't open it.
Looked like it would hold substantially less "stuff" - I dont think my miter saw would clear with the tonneau cover ?
It will be tight.
I would be very interested to know how many (gallons / liters) the new bed would hold if filled over the 2.5 gen.
Anyway with the smaller cab space I would definitely need the longer bed to make up for reduced capacity.

I also spoke to the Service Manager who I know well from years of service there.
So I asked about these turbo problems.
The look on his face revealed all - the internet age of info was evident and its toll on him from customers asking... LOL. .
What he told me was this.
They have had 3 Tundras in with the dash - wastegate error. All problems were cleared electronically.
And customers drove away.
He said if he had to do a Turbo replace, he hopes it is not the case, as he would definitely be removing the cab.
"The engine is just too far back to not do this"
So any of you backyard mechanics thinking you will just go through the wheel well.....Go for it 8^0

I also asked him - Why all the space in front of the engine ....Cooling or Safety or Styling ?
His response - "No comment"
This tells me alot about Toyota's engineering information to dealers.
It all makes me glad I am in no hurry to replace my '18 Tundra.
IMO - more time is needed for real world data to come in on these Tundras.

 

I'd take that mechanics statements with a grain of salt and a huge shot of tequila. There's a pretty evident electronic issue with the Tundras. Whether the actual wastegate is shit or not, there is an abundance of CEL's. And there are multiple ways you can replace said turbo without lifting the cab. I've seen at least 4 different fix methods for the wastegate, only 1 required lifting the cab.

 

I couldn’t find a volume comparison but the 22 is definitely a little bit shorter both in length and depth. 21 crew max is 66.7 long and 22.2 deep vs the 22 at 65.6 and 20.9

 

I feel the same way at the moment, I dont feel like there is much difference with reliability at the moment from one to the other, the QC problems make me wonder if toyota took some short cuts, its very unlike them. Im still wanting a platinum but Im likely waiting until 2023 to see if they can get quality trucks built consistently. Im also going to test the refreshed GMC AT4 I think since Im waiting around at this point.

You know what would be really fun? Saying "I want it! Right now!" then, go through the whole process with the dealership all the way until the very end, then saying "nah I changed my mind. You should stop gouging people." and just walk out while flipping them double birds.

This is a case IMO where numbers don't tell the whole picture. Someone looks at those numbers and says ...hmmm not much difference.
Back both trucks up and just look at the difference in the size of the tailgates. Length is one thing but you can always get the long bed. Its the depth / clearance on items I am more concerned about, with the stuff I tend to load up with.

Different dealerships may come up with a dozen ways to do the repair. It doesn't matter because I have been dealing with one dealership for years, and if I were to get into a new Tundra one day, this dealership would continue to do the service on it. If that dealership is raising the cab to repair, I need to consider this. So any decision to purchase means I want this problem cleared out. No more reports in a fashion satisfactory to me.

Love my F series so far but it’s really starting to irk me that Ford was willing to put a Generator in it that could power most of my home’s major essentials in a power outage but short of a Lariat they would not give me the fold down rear console I got in a 2009 mid grade Tundra. Barely ever even used to thing, but still… probably my biggest irritant so far.

 

Could you buy a new back seat?

 

So that's one thing the Ford doesn't have (dependent on trim) vs. the Tundra. Unfortunately the Ford does have many other things the Toyota does not.

I will live with it unless I ever come across pristine Lariat front and rear seats in a totaled truck or something prior to when I look at putting leather in.

 

I feel like if cars weren’t loaded down with safety chimes, buzzers and driving aides I mostly leave turned off there would be so much more room in the budget for things that matter to me. Cars get loaded with nannies only a minority of the population uses and then engineers have to figure out whether stuff like tow hooks on the Tundra or the rear folding armrest on the F150 XLT are coming out to cancel that cost out.
