That's a manual locking hub, not a differential locker. I'm not too familiar with the front axels, but they are either electronically actuated or locked all the time.

I didn’t think they were locked front or back. That is why folks were/are/did add lockers??

True, some come rear locked, but what you pictured is just to engage the front hubs. Even if people were/are/did add front lockers, it wouldn’t have that red dial on the front

Thats a manual hub lock. Not diff lock. They are two complete different things.

Manual hub lock disconnects the tire from the axle. The tundra has an automatic disconnect collar that moves in place when you switch to 4x4. Its just one collar that is on the front differential.

In 2wd the collar is disconnected and the CV axles spin same speed as the tires. Swith to 4x4, the collar locks up front and transfer case shifts to 4x4 to send power to front wheels.

You are correct, but the picture you posted is of a manual locking HUB. What you are talking about is a differential LOCKER. The lock on the HUB allows the hub splines to engage with the axle splines. The differential locker forces the left and right wheel on the axles to spin at the same speed regardless of traction on either wheel. Electronic 4WD vehicles tend to NOT come with manual locking hubs as the hubs are either engaged with the axels all the time, or the hubs are engaged either electronically or by vacuum.

What you pictured is the old fashion way of pressing the 4WD button. What an actual "locker" does is one step beyond normal 4WD (think limited slip on steroids).

I understand the locker to the axels. I thought the wheel lockers would lock both wheels so they both would turn. Had a friend always put the truck in four wheel drive then get out and we would have to turn the dial. I always that that locked both wheels so both soul spin. I had one of the last S20s 4 wheel drive and I got high centered up front but the only tire that would spin was the one up in the air,, I was wishing I had those or at least thought I was wishing for those so the other tire would turn up front too??

Some people say you get better mpg with manual locking hubs but it’s negligible. There are also conversions for old trucks that use Tacoma/4runner hubs, but it’s a lot of work for that gram content
