I think reddit/ YouTube probably has more to do with it. I have had that JD in my hands a few times ng ut always put it back on the shelf. Maybe its time.

Agree, it really comes to life. I like that bottle quite to be honest.

It's good, it's got just a touch of bite that's to be expected with a 111 proof

Good flavor and makes for a nice sipping bourbon with just a bit of ice

This week finds me in Lebat, California. Hit up a pretty ghetto liquor store and was surprised that they had some very good offerings (almost all at a heavy surplus).

    They had:

    Weller Antique for $135
    Weller Special Reserve for $119
    Weller 12 year for $275
    Blanton Single Barrel for $175

They had Eagle Rare with virtually no markup @ $40 so I bought three. One is foe a coworker who has been trying to score a bottle.

This means I can open the bottle I've been saving at home now that I have a backup.

Also California is a shit hole. :)

    20220418_190637.jpg

***ETA I keep saying "Lebat" but it's actually "Lebec"

Just goes to show how forgettable this place is.

It’s not bad, just some pepper aftertaste. At $5.99 per bottle I went back and got another case.

Anyone wanting to understand / know / educate themselves on the finer art of whiskey should frequent this site.
It's the only one I know of that is totally from informed everyday people who buy whiskey, not the snobs in magazines.

Probably a year or so ago I tried their small batch and it really didn't do much for me but kept seeing all the positive stuff for the Uncut Unfiltered. It turns out they were right, this is pretty good stuff and I imagine after being open for a bit it will be even better.

Should look great in the basement. Includes a matching wall shelf for behind the bar storage. It's all reclaimed barn wood and a custom built hardwood top. Images show before the bar edges were cut to size.

I know a lot of us prefer to sip our bourbons/whiskeys 'neat'. However, some products really do need to be 'opened up', especially when dealing w/unfiltered or barrel strength. I was taught to drop a few drops (I mean drops not pours) of distilled or branch water into the bourbon. Allow the viscosities to blend on their own (about a minute), then take your first sniff and make note of all the aromas you are sampling. Then sip, slight swish on the pallet and again make note (actually writing these down) of the various flavors. Then swallow, noting taste at the back of the pallet and mouthfeel (long and lingering or short lived and gone quickly), and again making good notes throughout this process. Then wait 5 minutes and repeat; another 5 and repeat; another 5 and repeat, etc. until you've allowed the bourbon/whiskey to open up for a full 60 minutes. Throughout this process, you should find a best/preferred minimum amount of breathing/opening time for that particular bottle according to YOUR pallet.

I learned this during a Buffalo Trace sampling, and it was incredible the differences I was able to discern at the various set times, particularly with ryes and some barrel strength offerings. Taking the time to do this has literally increased my enjoyment of each bottle I spend the time and money to enjoy. I believe it has truly increased the value of each bottle I've purchased. Plus instead of knocking back shots (although there is a time for that), I find myself more often than not just sitting back and really enjoying the process of sipping some good whiskey.

Plus, it's a great way to spend an evening w/some good friends and not get hammered.

This is spot on, true with most brown spirits. Couple drops of water - no ice!

Not sure if it’s been posted, but I was gifted this Yellowstone bourbon. I’m usually an Irish whiskey drinker, but it’s good stuff.

I have a select barrel pick of this from Border Beverage in WY - it's good, not incredibly special but definitely a great sipper.

    Sounds time consuming.
I prefer to crack open a bottle, slide glasses to everyone, pour friends 1st shots, smell the aroma together and pound em down.
You're big boys n girls and should know when to pull in the clutch.
