Long story short......I put diesel fuel in my tank and ran it.

In my defense, I didn't know there was diesel fuel in my gas can. After all it's MY gas can and it has only ever had gas in it until one of my sons used it for diesel storage without marking it. His wife put diesel in their gasoline car. He used my gas can and several other containers to flush out the fuel system. He did not mark those containers and left them sitting in my garage.

Last Saturday I was low on fuel but pressed for time so I didn't fuel up. Saturday night came and a humongous snow storm blew in (well, not that humongous, but it was cold and I was tired.) so I didn't feel like fueling up in it. Sunday morning I figure I'll put some gas in from my gas can before heading to fill up. Start the truck and walk in the house. Next thing I know my truck is coughing and sputtering a death rattle. I thought maybe the gas I put in was just old or something so I ran to the station and bough new gas and dumped it in. No go. WTF?

Son comes out and confesses. Dam. Double dam. Had to connect a hose to the fuel pressure line at the fuel rail and tell the computer to turn the fuel pump on. Out came 7 gallons of diesel gas mix. Chased it with 2 clean gallons of gas. Put it all back together and started it up.

The poor truck ran like crap. I drove it to the station and filled it with fresh fuel thinking that any diesel remaining would be diluted. Well it ran poorly for a couple of days and it kept throwing codes. Finally I decided I'd get diligent and learn why the codes were persistent.

What we have here is a nuked MAF sensor.

Turns out you cannot shoot starting fluid into your system with the key on. I learned that this sensor runs at 300 deg celsius. Introduce an inflammable and you have igniton.....just not where it is useful. So lesson learned. Made a nice explosion sound though. I thought it was a backfire.

Anyway, with a new OEM MAF installed my truck runs better than before. Noted is that my throttle response is more reasonable than before. Previously I had a real touchy gas peddle. Figured it was the issue others have had. But this new MAF sensor tamed the response perfectly. Something to consider for those with a jumpy throttle. That's all for now. Next time I'll check for diesel before I use MY gas can. lol

I actually did the same thing in my 1985 Toyota four-wheel drive with a 22 RE. I immediately got to a gas station and topped the tank off with gas deluded it enough that it was drivable it took about four tanks of gas for it to start running properly again !

Part of being human is making mistakes. Shit one time I had the green pump in the filler, hit the button for 91, and was wondering "ok where the hell the gas at" when nothing happened.

Ether should probably get phased out of the consumer market. Diesel engines from the last 20 years all have some type of heater in the induction side or the combustion chamber.

I put the blower gas-oil mixture in the gas only lawnmower and it was running real bad. Was surprised a little oil in the gas (40:1 ratio) would have that much impact.
My cans were clearly marked and they are different sizes and shapes.
I was just distracted so it can happen. Murphy's law.

Glad that it all worked out for you. Could have been much worse.

I work in the marine industry and we had one of our techs at one of our customers where we put in a fueling system. A 50’ go fast boat with twin supercharged big blocks pulled in for fuel. The dock employees handed the fuel dispenser to the captain who proceeded to pump 110 gallons of diesel. Nobody paid attention to the green nozzle and green hose. Luckily they realized the error before starting the engines. Had to tow it to a shipyard to pump it out.

Did that the other way around once with my Duramax. Somebody had swapped the nozzles at the gas station and I was 8-9 gallons in when I looked at the pump and figured it out because the price-per-gallon wasn't right. I was in the middle of nowhere so just said "screw it" and topped it off the rest of the way with diesel. The result was 8-9 gallons of gas in a 26 gallon tank of diesel. Truck ran fine, think it might've cleaned out the injectors a little because it seemed to have a little more pep.

When our local Walmart rebuilt the Murphy gas station they started to offer enthanol-free gas.
I pulled up, stuck the black nozzle in, and hit the blue button.
Nothing would come out of the nozzle.
I went inside to inquire, the nice lady came out and pointed to the blue nozzle.
I looked at her and said 'stupid customers' she just laughed..

Diesel nozzle is supposed to be lareger than a gas vehicle will receive for this vary reason. Sounds like the gas station could be culpable also. Hey I am just trying to help you share the blame. ;)

I've noticed both diesel and gasoline pump handles with the green covers. You want to see problems with fuel mixup, hang out at the local airport. It's obvious when a turbojet or turbofan aircraft comes in but there are a few reciprocating piston aircraft that either had turboprop engines changed out or some like the Rockwell Commander original had piston engines then went to turboprop. The results if not caught usually are devastating and often fatal.
