Thanks for posting these facebook posts for those of us that aren't on facebook.

Looks like 11.5k miles is the highest mileage failure to date?

Interesting that you kept all those failures in a file. What is that, 70-80 cases? If we assume the number who post of a failure on FB or social is maybe 10 per cent of the owner population, the real number of failures is closer to 800? Let's say 1,000 to round it out.

About 30,000 2022 Tundras built so far (Nov-March). So if the failure rate is 1,000/30,000, we're looking at a failure rate of 3.3 per cent based on those guesstimates, though the percentage should fall as more trucks without a failure are produced. (Though more early trucks might/can still fail.) Still sucks for at least 1,000 buyers.

Wonder if wastegate orders arrive at the factory in batches of 1,000?

Those are nowhere close to even half of the failures posted on FB, tried to stick to photo evidence and not include those just saying "happened to me too"

However, don't disagree, you are in likely in the ballpark. (a very big one)
Based on very limited information, I would estimate that far less than than half of the fleet have experienced drive train failure for this issue to date, but it's well more than "less than 1%" so many claim. Call it somewhere between 3% and 30%.

Toyota NA could tell you what that percent is to 4 decimal points, but they have chosen not to.

Also seems to be a rumor that if you pass x miles you are out of the woods, but I have seen no explanation on why they are making that conclusion. I think its more of an optimistic assumption. No bona fide explanation yet given as to what the actual failure is. Therefore, can't rule out more early drive train failures for this issue won't start as more miles accrue.

The last two points combined with part availability and not having spare vehicles are why I'm just not comfortable pulling the trigger yet.

Those that dismiss all of this and shout "YOLO" as they part with $60-$70K are the same folks that keep the lights on in Vegas. More power to them, but not what a makes most loyal repeat Toyota customers.

I generally agree with this, though I will refrain from speculating on the # of problems as a % of the whole.

I think where you and I differ is that I'm looking at the length of time it takes to mop up new release issues in the current climate as a systematic risk (to borrow a term from the world of investing), not something unique to Toyota, and I'm not giving Toyota a pass to do extremely un-Toyota things. I'm simply saying that it is understandable that they're having a hard time getting things fixed when supplies across the industry are backordered. Everything is moving much more slowly than anyone (Toyota included) wants. They still need to fix the problems, which they and their shareholders want to be done as quickly as possible. I do agree that communication could be more open. But as @Mattedfred pointed out, there could very well be a legal dispute between Toyota and the supplier responsible for the faulty waste gate which is why it seems we're getting radio silence on the issue. Even the release of information is affected by the current scarcity situation.

An example I keep returning to: I'm sure they'd replace a faulty coilover if they could find one.

Given that this situation will continue for more than a year (per Toyota North America VP), I'd be firmly sitting out at this point. No such thing as a need for a brand new truck.

You could quantify accurately by the failure part vs trucks produced and sold to date. This is all old news and today's rendition FB cut and paste and the Tundra world is collapsing.

No doubt there are issues-to what extent is pure speculation until we see (and most likely never will) the actual data.

I am convinced Toyota will find Root Cause and eliminate the issue. They are layered into and wrote the book on TQM. Certainly, the supply chain shortages are factoring into replacement parts availability.

If I had a failure, would not be happy, but then would work through it to a positive outcome. Life throws us curves every day. Are you a swing and a miss person or someone who takes lemons and makes great lemonade? It's all outlook.

Its just a truck and there are so many more important things to worry about.

Just got back from picking up my Tundra for it's 10k mile service. Obviously, I drive a lot since taking delivery of my truck on December 15th so I've gotten to know my service writer pretty well (2 service appts in 4 months).

My usual service advisor told me that they had their first truck with the turbo issue. He said the truck had only "a couple hundred miles" on it. They had just done the tint and installed some running boards on it last week and then the owner brought it in for the turbo issue.

I figured Toyota would've QC'd trucks going out & stopped delivery by now since this issue has been known by them since at least late Jan. I'm a little surprised that they're still delivering vehicles that have this issue. I thought they had identified the "bad batch" of parts and that any additional failures would've been trucks already out in the wild. This truck was just delivered the week of April 4th.

He did tell me that they only expect the truck to be down for a few days.. I asked him if they were just "adjusting it" like some folks have reported or if they were replacing the entire turbo assembly on one side. He didn't know since he's not the service writer on it. He did mention that Toyota had sent a tech to look at it and work with their own master techs to diagnose it.

Just thought it was interesting. I also asked the build date but he didn't know. I did see the truck sitting in the back of the service lot. It looked like it was a pretty base model. It looked like a SR DoubleCab with the 8' bed. White with the basic steel (or aluminum) wheels and the base grill.

Thanks for posting this information, very helpful! Not being sarcastic, but could you elaborate on why you were surprised?

Take it for what it’s worth. He mentions March build date, but didn’t share a pic of his door jamb so not 100% sure.

Why am I surprised? Because I thought I read somewhere or maybe it was Tim from Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk that Toyota had identified the affected supplier & batch shipments of parts. If that is the truly the case, then Toyota has had a track record targeting those vehicles for repair. At least at one point they did.

Maybe I'm just remembering it wrong (that they had identified the supplier & parts batches).

Do you guys know why some codes say “check engine reduced power,” some “check engine, visit dealer, some “VSC & break malfunction + check engine”?

Are all the same wastegate issue? If so, I would have expected to through the same exact code each time. I also thought that the wastage code is the one that says “check engine, reduced power.”

Fair question. Have read the parking brake warning is also associated with stuck grill shutters. Crazy.

If it helps here are the associated OBD codes Toyota is giving their techs for the codes that generally lead to replacing turbo.

Some Toyota's disable traction control when the check engine light comes on so I'm assuming it's something similar but just displaying in a weird way. I get VSC OFF and TRAC OFF lights on my 4Runner if the CEL comes on.

Well this happened today. Spoke with service manager have an appointment on Monday and a Tacoma loaner reserved.
    Jan 6 build date.
Note: I was on highway for about 10 mins at 85-90 when code popped, did not lose power and was able to continue at highway speed.

I do not have code reader, but service manager seems on top of this, I wanted to bring it on Saturday but he said a master technician will need to look at it so Monday. Said whatever it is they will make it right.
I did not have the Reduced engine power message. Just parking sensor malfunction-visit dealer.

I really don’t have much choice I have to keep driving it, unless it completely shits the bed.

I have been having the parking sensor malfunction as well. It comes on sporadically. Took it to the dealer and they said the rear right passenger brake actuator is malfunctioning. They said they fixed it and the light still comes on randomly lol. I am getting the 5K service done soon so I will address issues with the dealership and update. One turbo was replaced at 1,159 miles.

I'm sorry this is not good advice. Assumes best case.

He is doing the right thing calling it in and taking it to the dealer.
Often they can pull OBD remotely.

My build date was March 22nd. I received my new 2022 Limited TRD Package on 4/18. At 105 miles, I got the check engine light of death on 4/21. I was told today (4/22) that it is the wastegate and I won't be getting answers till late next week. I'm very disappointed by this.

You'd think this would be handled by now, but Toyota is being very sketchy and quiet about it all.

I would love for it not to be turbo! I’ll keep updating as I get more info. Truck has been solid with zero issues until today.
