Well that's a steal then! The last time I looked at buying a radiator from Toyota is was twice as much as a Denso unit from Rock Auto or Scamazon.

Both rear speakers not working? And you tapped the TUNE knob to make sure the fader wasn't set all the way to front? I had the same radio, 6 disc, non-JBL, I think it steps F5 - F4 - F3 - F2 - F1 - [BAL or 0] - R1 - R2 - R3 - R4 - R5, where F5 would be front-only speakers, BAL is equal front and rear, and R5 is fully to the rear.

Use that fader to fade all the way to rear and check if everything goes quiet. If *BOTH* rears are silent, then go check if their plugs are disconnected. If they aren't, I suspect either the rear channel output is blown on the HU, or the rear channel is blown on the amp. I've never seen two OEM speakers in one zone fry simultaneously without anything else taking a dive and I've seen a LOT of shit in my years.

That said ... know a couple of things. I still have all my OEM speakers in great shape. Low-mile truck. Happy to send anything you need, if you want to keep it OEM. My OEM radio and amp already went to @FirstGenTundra1867 to get his setup back to stock, so I can't help you there.

If you wanted to upgrade, honestly, anything in JBL's line of components is going to give you concert-quality sound. I've said this a hundred times before, but there's a reason why a huge swath of musicians, clubs, stadiums and other venues use JBL for their sound. Their attention to making sure their speakers accurately replicate sound is legendary considering the price point. Crutchfield is loaded with options.

You can find plenty of full-size (double din) radios out there with knobs. Even ones with touch-screens. I'm also a fan of my knob, but I get by with a full touch screen and steering wheel controls just fine.

I had to re-write that, I almost wrote "I'm a huge fan of knobs, also" and that was one of the rare occasions where I re-worded something in a while.

    Someone help me understand this.

Zuk doing a gear install, he is a master of the craft it would seem. Granted I am too uneducated to know enough about the details but I can spot a fake and I can see through confidence to know who is an expert and who is a bs artist.

Side note, Michael Lewis has a fantastic podcast on the subject of experts and how it’s often hard to find them.

My question is not “Is Zuk awesome” because I believe the objective answer is yes and I’m not looking to be persuaded otherwise. My question is also not “How much better is Zuk than some average gear installer” because that’s similarly uninteresting to me given my choices.

The question I would like to understand better is, what does a Zuk level of precision with the install manifest as? In what ways might I benefit from the extra work involved in schlepping thirds to him?

Is it longer lifespan? Greater efficiency? Lower risk of problems and vibrations? Shorter break in?

I have mostly assumed that I would be fine no matter who did the install but given what I’ve learned about the level of precision involved, I’m trying to wrap my head around the difference between an adequate gear install and an excellent one.

@daveeasa, really interesting question! Im looking forward to hearing what some of the replies are. Could be helpful for me as I would like to re-gear eventually and would maybe consider making the trip to Zuk as well.

IMO when you get a master at this stuff, the likelihood of all of the above goes up greatly.

Hoping to do a couple of night runs coming up soon, so I added a pair of cheapo Amazon ditch lights and auxbeam gangplate. Will go with more reputable lights when I eventually get a hybrid bumper and have a better plan for all the lights I'd like.

Lights I went with have amber side running lights, so I am excited.to see how that and the main LED pod looks works on trails. I live in the bay area, so no easy dark places to see how bright they are just yet ‍♂️ .

My truck had one rear speaker not working when I got it. Think that was the first time I had seen a speaker just flat out not work though I'm sure you've seen a lot more than I have.

My rear speakers still played fine and didn't buzz but when I took the panel off for something, I can't remember what now, the foam surround had deteriorated to nothingness. They were promptly replaced with cheapo Kenwood's if I recall correctly. It's just back fill. No need for big spend. My tools in the back can't hear anyway. If they could they would pick themselves up and clean themselves up instead of me having to do it. :D

I've totally seen single speakers go out. I've seen one front and one rear go out. I've never seen two speakers in the same "zone" (both front, both rear, maybe both right or both left) go out simultaneously while nothing else has.

When I got my truck the driver's tweeter was shot. I'm lazy and didn't want to pull the door panel twice, so I bought a guaranteed-fit JBL components set. When I pulled the door, it was super clear that someone had the door card off in the past and forgot to reattach the connector. Tweeter was totally fine.

yea, on my drive to houston, i was fiddling with my knobs, thats how i found the rears werent working. I dont crank my stereo, so im pretty sure they’ve been out the whole time. I’ll find out when i get home. I kinda prefer the bassani over radio anyway.

Yep, I was going to say I remember seeing something like this, but you found it.

I'm not a fan personally, it looks too modern compared to the rest of the truck.
