So by your standard if it has sugar it's ok (within reason) as long as it's not added sugar? Just from the sugar perspective. I know that there is a bunch more to it, but I'm specifically asking about that one item on the nutrition label.

I guess you don't put beans or tomato sauce in your chili?

Why not just use garlic powder or mince a clove of garlic yourself?

I'm thinking he means sugar on the ingredient list, not the nutrition information, yeah. Fruit contains sugar but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have about 5 servings a day of it.

My hard and fast rule at this point is no added processed sugar.
There’s no sugar added to the beans or tomato paste I use. But yeah, our grocery stores have an entire wall of marinara sauce, and maybe 1 jar has no added sugar.

And yes a big part of the problem is the food industry here. Too easy to sweeten everything with processed, fermented corn sugar. When you get away from it, you realize how gross it truly is.

The nutritional info separates the two. Sugars and added sugars.

I do. My point was it's everywhere you look even in something you wouldn't expect, like salt.
I really don't worry about it much anymore because I mostly stay away from any packaged products. I try to eat fresh clean food.

You should add soy and seed oils to this list of things to avoid. Soy products are added to almost everything also.

LOL....that is what I used to say.

As of now I haven't had caffeine for 3.5 years, and gave up all soda for the most part (will have one w/alcohol once every 3-5 months). So since giving up caffeine, has been only water, err...and Guinness.

I just spent $40 at the grocery store and the only thing I got with sugar in it was ketchup for the wife and kid.

I wish I could do it but I like it too much. I do try to limit my intake and every time I do, Kit Kat releases a new flavor or freakin' @Cpl_Punishment shares what he bought his wife for Valentines Day.

    :fistbump:

So I'm kinda on a sugar rollercoaster. I have one C4 or Ghost energy drink a day to help with my migraines. The bonus is that they come in Starburst or some other candy flavor so it helps with my sugar cravings.

I have a ton of respect for you all that can cold turkey the sugar. For me, I'm happy just cutting it back.

I got away from caffeine (at least coffee/tea/soda) for 2 years and felt great after the first month. When I took a trip to Japan I relapsed by drinking coffee to adapt to the time difference. Haven't tried to give it up again since, but I could.

Sugar would be really hard to give up though. I don't eat a lot of sweets and never use sugar for anything but its in so many foods.

Don't go on a diet. Find your diet and stick to it. Most stick to a food lifestyle do so by making it flexible.

What works for me is eating 80% clean and building in regular indulgences. Life is too short to give up ice cream...

It’s not too short to make your own in a blender. ;)

Also, did you know there is Keto ice cream? I am hesitant to look at what else is in it…probably full fat dairy and lots of sugar alcohols (which your body can’t process).

I love the real stuff and can maintain a healthy weight by eating it in moderation.

I have been doing cardio and lifting for 40+ years. It got real easy when I finally started eating right (for me anyway), about 15 years ago...congrats on what works for you:cheers:

The challenge for me now is finding a good time to work out. I already get up at 5:30 for work so I don't want to get up earlier. If I do it after the kid goes to bed (between 7 and 8), I'm worried my sleep will be affected as I think it's recommended not to work out less than 3 hours before you go to bed.

    Back after about 30 days!!

I'm pretty glad I tried this challenge out. During the beginning, the first couple of days, it felt really weird not having any sugary things. The crave for processed sugar was real, haha . . . until almost to the halfway point. From that point til now, there was zero craving for sugar and I actually felt great. You could even say I felt a lot better, actually. I don't know if it was a placebo effect, but I felt a lot healthier, more active, less sluggish. Also, I had fruits like apples, oranges, grapes, bananas during the challenge, none of which, I feel, provided good boosts of energy during lunch, etc.

Just this morning, right after the challenge ended, a friend made lemon bread and I tried some. Surprisingly, it tasted *too* sweet! Things that are overly sweet and processed seem a lot less appetizing.

I learned a lot during those 30 days. I will definitely be limiting processed sugar intake from now on.

Great job!! That’s so awesome! You are describing almost to a T my first time through Whole30. Cravings disappeared around day 11-12. Halfway through, I felt I had more energy and mental clarity than ever. The benefits continued—weight loss, clearer skin, looking younger, ect. After day 30, I “rewarded” myself with some ice cream. Big mistake. It was WAY too sweet, and it gave me a headache almost right away.

And if I had “treated” myself again the next day, I guarantee most if not all my progress would be completely undone, just like that. An entire month of focus and intentional eating undone by two decisions. It do be like dat…

Very interesting thread. My wife and I work to avoid processed sugars and high fructose corn syrup. It's difficult to eliminate them all so all we hope for is to cut back as much as possible.
About 6 months ago I became aware I was lactose intolerant. It came up on my quickly so there's another bummer for me.
We should all work harder to reduce or BMI. Afterall our Tundra's payload is depending on our success.

Just my opinion but sugar seems a lot worse than caffeine based on what I've read. I don't feel too bad about drinking 1-2 cups of coffee per day.

    Hey All,

5 years with zero processed sugars here. Less than 30g of sugar per day from all sources of food. I am also zero starch. This is to treat my autoimmune disease (ankylosing spondylitis), but it has improved every aspect of my health and wellness as well as totally halting my autoimmune symptoms and disease progression. I was actually pretty crippled and desperate before I turned to dietary options, and it changed my life.

I eat a lot of fiberous veggies and meat. Essentially a keto bodybuilder diet... though I eat too much protein to stay in ketosis.

Anyways, just providing another anecdote about sugar being horrible.
