Factory head unit does that as well. Its wired into the sensor for the automatic headlights from what I understand

That's exactly it. Every car I've driven with that has CarPlay behaves just like that. The easiest solution is to just change your settings within iOS to have it stay either night or day mode if you have a certain preference. I personally just have it always set to night mode cause I like the darker design.

A couple of odd things that drive me nuts. No front recovery hooks? No built in step to climb into the bed?

Not just you. I dislike the spring tabs too, for the exact same reason.

I find it most annyoing with my Yeti tumbler. Random coffee cups and fast food drinks, plastic bottles are all OK. But that Yeti does not get along with the Tundra haha

It is the same as before — pull to close, push to open. In last gen, the switch was lower left on a vertical panel, so pulling felt more intuitive because the switch went up (to close). Now that's it overhead and horizontal, the switch feels backwards.

I had my truck showing empty and I found I could not toggle to sue the digital MPH when driving. It would only show the empty warning
Not a big deal since I was on my way to the gas station

Did you try hitting the OK button on steering wheel to clear it. That works on my RAV4
