I'm new to the forum and I've been reading on here for a while. Most of my questions have been answerd by reading thru the forum, but i guess its time for me to join so i can get some advice. I have thrown a P0894 code and a P0420 code with limp mode. 894 is transmission slipping and 420 is catalytic converters..Here is my dilemma..Should I drop in the IPT transmission and have the engine forged or just do the transmission. The engine runs great but I'm trying to bullet proof as much as possible..Does anyone have any suggestions pros or cons with only doing the transmission..if I do the forge I will delete the cats as well..stage 2 harrop sc, fuel rails, injectors, fuel pump an fittings and smaller pulley have already been done..thank you

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I would post this is the Ask the Toyota Mechanic forum to get their opinion. They typically don't come over here much.

@ViktorG can probably answer your question.

It depends on how hard you push it. Internals of the engine can handle stock Stage 2 Harrop; all the S/C offerings are around ~550. Unless you start pushing into the 600sHP or higher you should be fine stock from what I read here and on the other forums. The stage 1 Harrop thread has a bunch of links I gathered where people blew up their engines or fused gears in their transmission. Catastrophic engine failure seems to be guaranteed around ~650 on stock but some have had issues in the low 600s (engine ran lean and threw a rod). Transmission looks like it can go higher into the low 700s but the complaint is that it is soft shifting so the IPT may improve and tighten up the feel.

Unfortunately the transmission will have to be replaced or rebuilt and the cats replaced..I just didn't know if there would be any benefit to having the engine done while the transmission was being done in order to get rid of the cats because of having to run the engine rich. Thanks

That says nothing about your performance target. Call Harrop if you don’t like my answer.

I know your answer is correct...I'm just saying my transmission is toast...that's getting changed regardless..

Do the transmission and don't push it past stg2 on your Harrop...you will have no problems. Forge the internals when you want that custom stg'd (above stg 2) SC package.

I’m going to rebuild my trans 2012 Tundra 2wd (AB60?). IPT doesn’t state on website if they sell whole rebuilt transmissions. I assume they take ours in and rebuild them. FWIW, I ran my 3URFE for 112k miles with SC, both pulleys and 7-8 lbs boost at WOT (no cats). Never beat on it. It’s a MUST that we run them rich with proper tune. IMO these engines aren’t as stout as some say. I’d beef up bottom end. $ Expensive $

Are you experiencing any issues other issues besides the transmission?

You might not need to rebuild it unless you are having other issues...give them a call or email. They are super-responsive and don't mind explaining or troubleshooting over the phone. When I called last year, they didn't have any Toyota trans ready to ship, so I would have to ship my trans as a core or find a suitable donor to ship there and have them turn it into one of their performance offerings. I decided to just do the valve body until something breaks...so far so good.
