I’ll say it again because I cannot stress it enough. Do not mess with any wiring taped up or wrapped in yellow.

You are correct though. This is how my truck was without the wiring in the left harness.

The small harness in your last picture is not what you are looking for and may be the overdrive button??

I’m not seeing/feeling any other wire bundles back there, so I’m left thinking that in order to do all I’d want, that I’d need specific wires, pins and a whole container of elbow grease to do all this

If I’m seeing things as they appear to be, this radio controls and hands-free side quest just became a “fairly far down the road” item, rather than a “while I’m at it” item

prolly for the best, I’ve been losing track of where I’m at with various things lately. Best to get some of the other stuff done first and then come back to these other things one at a time later on

I’ll still put in the control paddle/dummy paddle with the donor airbag so I can at least have those off the dining room table (and have the visual to motivate me) but yeah, I think this is a sign that I need to apply the breaks on doing so many things at once and stop adding more and more to a overly full plate

I might ask a buddy of mine if he’s interested in cleaning up my radio wiring though, because yeah… THIS isn’t very pretty at all

 

Yeah, I just didn’t see that little fella in yours, but it was pretty obvious that it has nothing to do with what I’m (eventually) gonna do with the SWC’s

also yeah, even if we end up adding wires, we were just gonna wrap them up to each other, feed them along where they need to go and ~gently~ zip’m to the main bundles with a little slack on each side just in case =^_^=

It also looks like in order to get proper access to even explore where to go and whatnot, that I’d have to have the time and help to remove the dash, which I’m sure isn’t too terrible, but I’ve never done it, so that may be a “get help from someone that knows how” type deal

this has still been a fascinating experience though. I feel like my knowledge is dangerously close to leveling up to:

“Guy who almost feels comfortable enough to try reading a wiring diagram”

and not just “If it’s LEGO, then Letsgo” (my current level; Plug’n’Play/unfasten-refasten)

 

Ok, so my left harness under the lower shroud was black, but I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and figure that the color plug they used means absolutely nothing in this case. So yeah, just those 3 wires on the left and under no circumstances will I go near the one on the right



Yeah, I’ll hopefully get the left and right paddles as well as the smaller cover put in on Monday or Tuesday (I’ll just live a lie with unusable controls for a while. Likely a long while)

This has been a blast and I cannot thank you all enough.

I’ll still be around, hopefully with some actual progress to post from the other stuff… perhaps I’ll start that thread that @912 suggested. Won’t be as glamorous and will likely be more of a masterclass of what not to do, but hey, maybe it’ll be fun for a couple people all the same

 

Yeah, that connector is C16 with pin 6-horn and 4-5 cruise control. As @912 mentioned on pg 1, he had the same dillema, C16 connector with only 3 wires and old radio issue. Also in that post he linked to how he accomplished the install in link below.

Keep in mind that you are not concerned with plugs at radio as far as 4 wires you are needing to add to C16. As @MrDirtjumper and @912 have mentioned, you will be needing a Metra ASWC-1 switch to accomplish this AND if you go further down the rabbit hole in doing the right side, the HU you installed has to support Apple Carplay or Android.

 

I think I am eventually going to replace my current HU anyway, so I’ll keep that in mind

all I know is that I rented a Kia a few years ago and the Bluetooth feature paired seamlessly with my phone and I loved it… this HU has a 2 second delay if I’m not already running something like music…

(if I’m running music then my map app instructions are smooth… but if I’m ~in~ my map app with NO music playing, I never hear the first couple seconds of the driving directions)

Kinda what I get for a $150 HU… I’m sure that there are higher price point units that are zero-delay with Bluetooth

 

Well, it looks like I'm going to actually attempt this. Haven't had an opportunity to dissect my wheel yet but I have one inbound with clock spring. The airbag is my biggest point of confusion given that I have a 2002 and the clock spring will have 2 wires for a bag, not sure how/what is compatible with that bit. If anyone knows and has a plan for how I can prepare, feel free to let me have it. I was thinking if it's at all possible to use my stock clock spring and bag that makes the most sense but I'd have to trim it or replace the cover (is that possible) with one from a wheel that has the controls.

 

Finances kinda stopped me in my tracks for the time being, but in terms of the airbag, you’ll want to find one that was designed for a wheel with controls. I was fortunate that my local-ish salvage yard happened to have the type and color that I needed. Some states (NY) aren’t legally allowed to ship airbags out of state if I understood the person correctly.

you’ll want to read up on some of the threads here that specifically deal with swapping/replacing an airbag, and you’ll want to look up a couple video’s… pay careful attention to what they say to do and not do, be safe, take your time… be safe (again)

 

I think my big problem is that the new clock spring is for 2 wire airbag and I believe my truck is one wire. I probably need to learn more about these airbag systems.

 

Sometimes you can unbolt your older ignitor and swap it to the new style airbag.

 

I’m for sure in way over mine. I figure I can play with it on the bench and take apart my existing one to gather Intel before deciding.

I kind of like my wheel but want the audio controls and I’d like it if the wheel were darker too. I’ll keep iterating till I feel comfortable. Ideal is swap just the wheel and airbag cover and keep the stock bay and clock spring. That feels safe to me but may not allow for passing the signal through. And who knows what it looks like on the other side of the spring.

Lots of effort just to have volume buttons.

 

Since they did not add steering pad switches for audio until 2003 model, you'll definitely need new clock spring 843060C021 or search pick a part places. Using your existing air bag is doable if you trim the left side. I recall @MrDirtjumper cut his and was pleased with outcome. Perhaps he'll chime in.

Thanks! I negotiated for wheel + clock spring thrown in for free. I'm trying to twist the guy's arm to get me the airbag cover too so it all matches. I would like to re-use my current airbag to make it all good to go if I can marry things up. I assume my old clock spring isn't pinned for audio given that it's an 02.

Thanks for the push/assist, I'm sure I'll be asking more questions / asking for more help as I proceed. It's daunting but I'll be stoked to have leather and buttons and darkness

 

No dice getting the OG bag cover but I attempted to order one off ali-x so we'll see how that fares and if it matches color-wise.

On the receiving end I wonder if I will need a different connector to mate with the new clock spring. If it's just terminals then I can probably handle that. The feed is going to a maestro SW which will then interface directly with my Pioneer 4660 so I can pin it's harness and populate the connector I have now if it's the same one and I'm able to source terminals.

 

If you remove the column shell, you will see the black connector that's right next to your yellow airbag connector. For your 02, the EWD shows you to at least have connector C16 with pin 6-Grn-Red and pin 3-Bwn, pin 5-Grn if you have cruise. That's the one you're looking for. You will be adding 3 conductors to that C16 connector, pins 10-12 that will head over to your maestro behind radio. As for removing shell, turn steering wheel all the way left, remove phillips screw, same for right side and also one underneath shell. Taking a pic of what you see will help and also upload here.

What maestro did you get ?

I have an SW ADS-MSW, the universal one. It can be flashed to match the vehicle. I haven’t flashed it yet though as I figured that is rather pointless until I can test it.

So the rough expectation is that old and new clock spring mate the same to the vehicle and I just add terminals. Any chance you know what the terminal type is?

My current wheel is moon mist and the new one is dark grey. So I won’t be trimming the moon mist. I might just keep it all as is and shop for a new 2 stage bag and see if it throws a code. At least I’d have a bailout plan that way, swap all the OG parts back in.

 

If you need a dark grey one to trim, I still have one. I can remove the ignitor and ship the bag if you want.

 

Thanks Drew. Lemme see where I’m at once the wheel and fakey cheapo cover arrive. Maybe I should just build myself a new tundra in parts, one piece at a time. Haha.

According to a 02 EWD, C16 connector is 90980−11616. In the thread @RainMan_PNW posted that contains our year EWD's, there is an 01-05 and an 07 Wire Harness Repair Manual at top of his post.

So assuming my airbag cover is a decent match, that’s the lone remaining item for me to procure? Any help on search terms beyond sequoia clock spring and look at the photos to make sure it’s one wire airbag and description for audio controls? Or did all the sequoias have audio pinned?

 

I believe 2002. You will need to still get an single wire airbag. Or you can just plus the single plug in on the dual stage bag.

 

I've been assuming this entire time that mine, being a 2002, is single wire.

The plan is to remove and replace the cover per the TW thread. I bought a rivet kit for that, I think that's the only part with remote difficulty?

 

your have a single wire but your connector will be like the stock tacoma connector.. it will have a totally different connector.
