As some of you know I have a 2012 Tundra doublecab with the 4.0 1GR-FE. We have interesting aspirations with the build in terms of boost applications moving forward. I did have some question regarding swapping in a V8. Is it possible without major work? Meaning mostly bolt on and electrical changes? I know the 5.7 would need a new trans and axle but what about the 4.6 and 4.7? Feel free to comment im sure there are people interested in the topic

And no I won’t be selling the truck if I ever chose to go the route. ;)

5.3s are not my thing haha. I love Chevrolet just not the new ones, seems like a lot of them burn oil normally that’s one of my pet peeves. If I wanted to transplant a power train on a smaller truck id look into diesels. I know there’s a GM truck with a kubota motor out there

My first thought when I saw your thread was, wow that is gonna be a lot of work. My second thought was, I wonder if you could do a turbocharger or supercharger mod and still accomplish your end goal. That might be a simpler way to go. I don't know much about either a turbo or supercharger mod on a 4.0 but I do know that swapping to a completely different engine can be a royal pain. It might be something to look at if you think that option is feasible.

    Just something to think about.

That is actually the plan as of right now. Main issue is tuning. I’d like to stick to something like HP tuners which is more user friendly. As of right now only OV/VF tuner is capable of reading my computer but Matt does not have a stock map. He asked me to send in my computer to achieve a map but I don’t feel comfortable sending in my ecu for my daily driver knowing it can get lost in transit. There should be a supercharger that can bolt on but the kit alone is 7K. If this truck uses the same parts as the 4.6/4.7 in reality all that is needed is technically a harness, an engine, biggest pain would be figuring out the computer components that need to be swapped. Wish somebody would have gone through this already it would make life easier lol. I’d love to boost the truck but I seem to be the only person pushing the application in the tundra. Lots of people in the community have seemed to be scared of working in a V6 with easy access to V8’s although FJ/Taco community has had plenty of fun with these engines and modifications. My only concern is longevity as the blocks cannot be honed. I have heard of people boosting these engines at 230K miles so honestly I’m not worried in that aspect, I am definitely due for an oil change though haha.

I believe there’s a 2J tundra and Tacoma out there. Thank out of my price range for sure maybe later on in the future. Definitely an awesome engine

I didn't even know they put the 4.slow in the big-body tundras, or any of them for that matter.

You’d have to swap the trans, or have an adapter made, but the sbf windsor is the ultimate swap. The father of the ls engine. Sbf cleveland would work too, but i think its easier to find windsor parts. If you wanna stick with toyota, 1uz n/a or 2jz turbo, or 1kz diesel. 1vd if you’re made of money.

Indeed for a sbf the windsor would be the ultimate swap, imho 351 clevor would be top choice!

1KZ would be awesome for an older tundra or a taco. Thinking of swapping one in our 01' 4runner but there's a good amount of complications. I have a 4.0 in the Tundra idea is to supercharge it but we have issues with tuning. We should be able to make the URD kit work but that requires further research. In terms of tuning we are MIA HP tuners doesn't support the tundra 1GR and VF tuners "Matt" asked me to send my computer in order to get coverage. I am not willing to send it in as this is my daily driver at the moment. Down the line depending on tuning options I would love to stick to the 4.0, I do have a buddy in Virginia who is interested in diesel swapping his 2010 within the coming years. I'd be interested but probably not on this truck specifically unless I was really compelled to do so. 1VD is a dream for the tundra, hoping I can make it a reality down the line on a separate Tundra. 2JZ would be cool if it wasn't so overpriced haha, trust me I've seen the 2J Taco and Tundra. Those trucks inspire me to continue building the 4.0, I love this engine just really hoping to get some support for tuning so we can move towards making it a reality.

4.7 was in the first few years of thenewer gen. Odd but at the time it made more power than the SOHC 1GR-FE. by 2011 I believe the 4.0 was making more power while getting better gas mileage than the 4.7. 4.0 was available from 2007-2014 but the higher horsepower version was 2010ish-2014. 4.7 stopped around 2010 replaced by the 4.6 which made way more horsepower than the OG 4.0 and 4.7. It makes around 40 more HP than the newer 4.0 but it wasn't as easy to maintain. 4.0 is a very rare option not many were made or are still around. Personally I'm running 35's and stock gearing with an upgraded Trans valvebody, the truck is not fast but its quick on its feet with the pedal commander. I am gonna upgrade the intake solenoid as well within the next year or two so I'll see how that changes the driving experience. With the stock BBS wheels and michelins she had a 7.8 second 0-60. It was pretty quick for what it is but it's a very different truck now haha. We plan on acquiring another in the future to do a street build.

Being the owner of an ls swap c10, i can tell you nothing will be easy and not cost alot. Also you have some issues post swap, that pop up here and there. I love my c10 and would never sell it, but i dont know that the swap route is really worth it in most cases.

It can be conflicting, it's always exciting to go and boost a truck but it can be just as exciting to put a rare engine in a decent truck. We'd love to work with URD to supercharger the truck and make a youtube series out of it but tuning is a big wall right now. Maybe I can check out those Quantum Solenoids.
