Been wanting to ask this. I saw a comparison test that said Castrol was excellent at cleaning the engine. I used it for my first oil change and it definitely got dirty faster than Mobil 1. Is that an indication that it is cleaning things well or am I reading too much into it?

I run super tech 5-30 spring and summer just because my wife’s truck uses 5-30. In fall I put in either Pennzoil or mobile 1 0-20 extended just so I can run it a little longer and don’t have to change it in horrible winter conditions.

It just has more detergents in it for some reason.
With a decent oil and regular filter changes, you should never have any sludge / carbon build up.

Waay over priced for what it does. It works well but, how much are you willing to spend on well?
Plenty others that will carry your rig till the end with good protection at substantially lower cost.

just saw this on a Google search :

Can I use Ceratec on every oil change?
Liqui Moly recommends adding it to fresh oil during a oil change or add to existing oil when you have at least 5,000km (3,100 miles) left before an oil change. This gives the product sufficient time to coat all areas --- once coated last for 50000km (31,000 miles) so it is not needed every oil change.

    YMMV

I see you’ve got 21 so might not be applicable but did you notice a difference switching to 0-20 for winter?

Lately I've been using the Costco Kirkland brand 0W-20. This is totally anecdotal, of course, but I swear my engine is less noisy (valve/ticking sounds) on startup after switching from Mobil 1. Kirkland is also way cheaper--you can a 2x 5qt pack shipped for like $39, or can find it cheaper in the warehouse. Both of our vehicles use 0W-20, so we just get the 4-pack for $66 and it ends up being $3.30 per qt, which is amazing for synthetic.

First time I put in 5w-30 was a few days ago. I noticed slightly less engine noise.

The last oil change I also stuck a super powerful round flat magnet to the bottom of the oil pan.

Amsoil. May be marketing spiel, or it may be the best oil out there.
Dunno what was in there when I got the truck. Changed it to Amsoil, and the engine sounds better.
It gets really hot here in the summer time. Small insurance IMHO when it's 120 degrees plus on I10...

The thing that worries me about the "high mileage" oils is that they have additives that swell the seals. That's how they slow oil burning on old, worn out engines. It's more of a band-aid than anything. So if you use it for a while, then go back to regular oil, it can potentially CAUSE oil burning.

But yes, Walmart here has had 1/2 bare shelves for a long time. And the prices are UP.

Me too. Super Tech, Amazon Basics, probably the Kirkland oil too....it's all bottled by Warren Distribution and they've been doing oil since our great-grandparents were young. Good stuff that is easy to get, inexpensive, and performs better than a lot of the expensive oils on the market.

As far as Amsoil goes... if you look up "over-rated and over-priced" in the dictionary there's a photo of an Amsoil bottle there.

I like to use good lubricants in my vehicles, but. Some of these oils are way over priced for your run of the mill vehicle, 99% of them. I have never seen or heard of engine failure because of the manuf of oil use. Lack of maintenance and abuse , yes. Also if your cooling system is up to date and working fine the oil temp shouldn’t vary base on outside temp.

HM oil doesn't swell seals. It has seal conditioners, which help restore the pliability of the seal due to molecular replacement of the seals elastomer. HM oil doesn't contain much more of this additive than the regular non HM varieties, so the oil you're using now has seal conditioners in it.

And as far as amsoil and other boutique oils. If you follow the facts and not your gut, you'll end up with cheaper oil changes and a cleaner engine, because you can run extended drain intervals with alot of these oils. 20k OCI isn't uncommon (10k filter change). Comparing UOAs of many different brands, you'll see less wear with better formulated oils. Less wear=longevity in any application.

My boutique oil cost me $8.56 a quart/$68.48 per oil change(filter not included). And if I run a 20k OCI, that's only $34.24 per 10k. And the oil will still have life left after 20k.

I use nothing but Amzoil in all my vehicles and it’s the best oil I’ve used yet. I always change all my oils at no more that 5k it’s cheap insurance compared to buying a new motor or upper end rebuild. Cost is not a factor there. I don’t believe in a 10-20k oil changes I think that’s BS. Never did never will.

So you don't don't believe a UOA is valid and it's BS? 5k changes with amsoil is a waste and there is plenty of data to back that up. Amsoil uses great base oils and a very robust additive package specifically so you can use it for extended drain intervals. Kinda strange you use amsoil if you don't trust their engineering.

The million mile tundra had 10k OCIs fwiw.

I gotcha, over all not trying at all to argue. Your correct Amzoil is top shelf and I shouldn’t be changing it at 5k but it’s just routine for me and it makes me feel better to do so. That’s all. I know every time I change oil it’s not watery and it’s still very clear. That’s how I like to see my used oil.thanks for your input

Do you have any relevant journal articles or white papers? I'd like to read them. Oil and tribology were topics never discussed in any of my schooling. Past Googling efforts left me without much quality info. UOA seems straightforward enough but I'd like to get better acquainted with properties and performance metrics. Heck, I'm just as blind when it comes to grease. Have adhered to the mentality of 'flush frequently.'

On the other hand, once had a project where I went against status quo by removing grease zerks in favor of dry lubricant because that particular assembly didn't require it; according to rotational speeds and frequency of use.
