Just wondering if this is common. Still cold up in ON and when I first start the truck up using the remote, I notice an excessive amount of smoke coming from the exhaust. Smokes starts about 5 seconds after the engine starts to run. I think this is normal but just before it idles down, there seems to be a rush of darker smoke. I wouldn't say black but very dark grey. Very thick.

After about 30 seconds or so, it settles down and just looks like a little exhaust on a cold day.

Just wondering if anyone else noticed this. Had it into the dealer and they say no issues. I am not so concerned about the smoke on a cold day but the thick dark smoke gave me reason to ask about other's experiences.

Anyone else experience this and any insight into what it is? Is it related to turbos in general?

    Thanks.

Here is a pic. The smoke is sometimes darker but not black.

Is there any odour related to the smoke that’s different from normal exhaust?

It did smell a bit off a couple of times when it is darker. But for the most part, I didn't smell anything when it is just thick. Interesting enough, there is water dripping down after it heats up a bit and the driveway is a bit wet under the exhaust. I will have to change up the gas to premium to see if it gets better. Maybe throw some gas additive in there. I'll will report back in about a week or so after getting better gas in.

I personally don't think it should look like that on start up unless its cold outside, and even then it shouldn't last very long.

I think I am seeing the same thing in the video. Mine is a bit thicker and lingers more but that's probably because my truck is at idle. We don't have green grass yet so it's a bit colder adding to my exhaust smoke.

A little more comfortable knowing there are similar situations out there. Will change up the gas and check it out over the next few weeks as it warms up.

    Thanks for all the input.

@GG2SSM Did you ever figure anything out? I noticed this morning that right when I start up I get a really thick, gray smoke for about 5-10 seconds then just normal cold morning smoke. I saw it this morning for the first time when I used remote start, it was super thick.

typical moisture exhaust in a colder climate. mostly stems from moisture either in muffler or cats that burns out after they warm up. gets really bad for those that dont drive long enough to warm up and burn off the moisture from the last shutoff. see that all up here in nd during the winters we have

I believe nodak67 is correct. Mine is a bit darker that I would have expected for moisture. Noticed it yesterday morning now that winter has arrived up north. My dealer looked at it twice several months ago while in the shop overnight and said it was normal.

Whether it's summer or winter, it does take a few minutes before the exhaust settles down. I also get some smoke in the summer but not nearly as bad. Read somewhere that air is being pushed through the turbos or something.

Anyway - about 7k on the truck with no real issues. Just some minor gripes others have experienced. Had a chance to drive my old '17 Sierra the other day (son inherited it ). I like that ride a bit more with the z71 shocks but overall I like the Tundra much better than the GMC.

the black could be soot mixing with the water vapor. direct injected engines make soot like a diesel and you may notice the exhaust tip gets black.

easy way to confirm this is to watch the exhaust and after about 5 mins (depending on temp) the moisture will disappear and the exhaust will fade in thickness.

if after the engine warms up and you see blue tinge smoke then you have issues. but if its white or a shade of white its moisture. most of the time it will fade before 5 mins, but if you are like me in ND, it wont go away as the exhaust will be significantly hotter than the temps. right now we are running the low teen's during the day and singles at night.

0 degrees this morning and my Tundra does the same thing, as did my wife's RAV4, as did my 18 Taco Pro when I had it, as did the 2 Tacos before it, the Xterra, the Plymouth Neon, the Jeep, and well every other vehicle North of the Mason Dixon line when it gets cold outside and they are not parked in a garage to keep them warmer. Your truck is operating as intended, and no I'm not talking about Toyotas "operating as intended."
