I was cleaning the interior of my truck yesterday when I noticed that I had rust on the inside of the rear seat bracket. Very strange - considering this truck was built in March of this year and only has about 1000 miles on it.

I'm going to ask the dealer to replace it when I go in for my first oil change at 5K. Here in the south, with our humidity, the rust is only going to worse as time goes by.

    Anyone else seen this?

They all have it. I was lucky enough that the dealer was nice to replace them. The new set....came in rusted already. Dealer dropped off the new brackets at their body shop for sanding and a new paint job.

Makes you wonder what's going on. My 07 interior metals/fasteners are still like new, although climate here is usually pretty dry. Blame it on climate change. It's the trendy go to default excuse for all things gone wrong.

Thats nothing but surface rust. Most metals that do surface rust like that gets stronger with surface rust. just a FYI.

I didn't think it was that bad either. If I remember correctly the first Tundras that rolled out had some sort of potential bed bolt surface rust issues and the dealer would replace them if you bugged them about it. My bed bolts look perfectly normal after eight years. :D

All metals rust, even stainless steel, though somewhat more slowly. You could make the metal pieces more resistant to rust by sanding and putting protective paint/undercoat. Try that to a few pieces of metal and see how expensive it gets. Even then it's not permanent. Have you noticed that whenever a ship docks, most of time is spent in washing and painting? Some ship expert told me that it's basically a losing battle against rust.

The question is if that rust is problematic for the truck? Nope.

My 2012 has rust on the rear seat brackets. My 07 tacoma that I bought with 3 miles on the OD had some too.

Most of the time new trucks will sit exposed to the elements for months before being sold. (Except for Toyota's of course. T Pro's about 5 minutes. )
Ask any Navy folks here about ship corrosion control and you will get flipped off. Heh heh

It's not really that bad, but it has rusted to that point in 4 months. What's it going to look like in 4 years. As we all know, and everyone has pointed out, rust doesn't stop, once it has started.

I just find it unacceptable to pay nearly $40K for a vehicle and have rust ANYWHERE on it when it's brand new. I'll be bugging the dealer about it and I'm glad you guys have responded with similar experiences so I can mention that it's not an isolated event.

"Rust never sleeps". The bed bolt rust issue wasn't an isolated event either and was reported enough that a TSB was initiated. Even with a TSB, the dealer won't act on it if you don't say something. They don't notify you unless a potential safety issue (then it's a recall). I found out that there was a TSB to add a rear leaf on my 09 Tacoma and went to the dealer with TSB in hand and showed it to them so they could look it up. Picked up Tacoma next day(actually had to wait a week for parts ) with new complete rear spring sets and a new oil dip stick covered on a different TSB that I showed them. Service adviser said my out of pocket would have been $1600.00 for P&L

thats the problem with internal TSB. The public has NO IDEA a problem exist.. I wish all companies would stop internal ones but thats not going to happen.

One of the other forums, don't remember which, had a running up- to- date for TSB's in pdf format as they came out. Thinking we should do that here. Helps to have insider info too (hmmm...Jace...hmmm) ;)

I came across this thread because my 2015 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition with only 6000 miles on it, also has rust on the seat brackets. I have a scheduled appointment this Thursday with my sales rep and the service dept. I spent an awful lot of money and did not expect to see rust so soon. Yes, I do know it can happen, but not this soon into a new vehicle. My concern, if this is happening now...what will it look like by 30,000 miles? I'll let you know what and if anything happens on Thursday. Thanks for this thread.
