Does everyone remember when fan boys said the new tundra wouldn't have issues with turbos because they have been around forever. Pepperidge farms remembers.

The new Lexus LX600 (as well as Land Cruiser LC300) has the same engine and turbos as the Tundra, just tuned for 91 octane gas.

The 3.5 L turbo in the Lexus LS is completely different.

So this wasn’t squashed at the factory with replacement of a limited number of parts? I feel like someone here told me the specific bad part was identified and the trucks with it started getting pulled aside at the factory. Is that not the case, or are they just waiting for trucks that got delivered before this problem was caught to come back in for repairs?

This thread is just like the S550 Mustang 5.0 Typewriter Tick. The sky was falling and now the 5.0 Mustangs are just rolling along. Not the first time new product year launch has had issues. Quick check was the Taco's and rusting frames, Prius and Brake issues, Taco's with new 3.5 Motor and automatic programing issues. Years back the Corolla's would warp heads.

IMO opinion, its like everyone is waiting for the next one to fail and then lets beat the dead mule a few times more.

While I have a 22, will share over 2K and purring like a kitten.

There are no authorized Toyota spokespeople on this forum making official statements, that I know of.

Everything you hear/read here is anecdotal at best. Much of it is just certain members making claims as if they are experts.

That reasoning does not hold true. Power steerings have been around for a long time. They are failing in the last gen. Tundras & Sequoias, and there is a recall.

Took it in twice for this. On second trip they said it was a bad actuator and ordered a new part (back order no eta)

Couple days later they said Toyota responded said it's an issue with the ecu (new ecu order, back ordered, no eta)

Yep. These are the same people saying everyone that are posting their issues are lying or fake trolls. It’s comical. And then they try to deflect on another manufacturer. Right now Toyotas in the same boat as the big three. When you keep the same design for 14 years it better be reliable.

well when you make a completely new truck from scratch; New frame, new driveline, new body, new interior, new electronics etc, im sure there will be a few kinks to work out. Not even Ford or GM does that.

im sure you could do much better :rofl::rofl:

Or, maybe, this is exactly the argument for why you dont sit on a design for 14 years so that when you finally do decide to try and simply catch up your not having to make a ground up design.

That's up to Toyota to be honest and forthcoming with that info.

I'd also like to know if the turbos are Chinese

Yes, produced in China and apparently installed with great attention to detail by one of the Gump family in Alabama.

Ahh looks like I hurt fan boi pride with my comment. Cry more while you wait for your turbos(their parts to make them work correctly) to be fixed.

Bringing up powersteering? LOL on a select few 2021 models.

    Toyota can certainly do better.

Several brand new models (Coralla Cross) and other getting major engine updates (GR86)

Are they seeing drive train failures in the first weeks and months of ownership?

The current Corolla hatchback and sedan with the same drivetrain (new 2.0 and 2 stage CVT) as the Corolla Cross was released in 2019 and some of them had defects in their CVT, but not as prevalent as the Tundra turbo issue, apparently. So, FWD Corolla Cross will benefit from using the exact same drivetrain released 3+ years ago.

And yes, I'm ashamed to know this much about a Corolla!

Lots of the 3rd gen Tundra is brand new. But entire systems in it have been used in other models for years. They are just reused and/or up-cycled for the Tundra. Where it seems to be having the most common trouble–the TTv6 and its waste gates–isn't new. The MTS/crawl/rear locker system has been used for years in the Taco and 4runner. The composite bed came from the Tacoma. Same design/tech up-cycled for the new Tundra. This is a big part of how Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles and is the most profitable automaker in the world.

Ford and GM are and have been for a while objectively less reliable over the long term, so I'm not sure your argument that the new Tundra has issues because they waited so long to update it makes sense.
Even with the rollout issues we've seen, I wouldn't place Toyota in the same boat as the big three at all. They are still Toyota. They are still employing their unique manufacturing processes that have earned them the spot as the world's largest and most profitable automaker. This is the same Toyota that, when sold at the same price as a comparable Ford, has historically kept more of its value, especially after the warranty is up.

I'd put Toyota in the same boat as the big three regarding supply chain issues. Trying to give all automakers a little leeway due to that. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that the issues we're seeing would have been mopped up much more quickly before 2020.

To be "checked" does not mean they have the issue. Just Toyota being cautious

Yes, that just means Toyota realized bad batch of parts that needs replacement.

That is the same thing with the current gen turbo, quality control, not an inherent issue or engineering issue. All this is likely due to the recent pandemic and cost reduction, which is an overall Toyota issue.

The old gen steering issue just exemplifies the fact that no matter what gen you buy, you won’t be immune to possible quality control problems.

I’m inclined to think that the 3rd gen will be more reliable than the rest of its class simply due to Toyota’s long-standing track record. But it remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen if it will be capable of extremely high miles without generally any issues like the 2nd gens.

Toyota always recalls way more vehicles than are actually affected by identified issues. I’ll be curious to see if a recall is implemented for the waste gate issue and how many trucks it actually affects vs what they expand the recall to include.
