    Hello!

Yesterday my driver power window stopped working in the fully down position. Passenger window still works.

I have pulled the switch apart, and it appears to be working, and tested power at the disconnect to the motor, it is getting 12v on up and down switch operations.

So far It seems to me like the motor has failed (would love to hear others experiences if there is something else I have missed)

I priced the OEM motor from Toyota, at $580 for the part, which I have to admit was a bit shocking.

I have found alternative parts online for $70. I would much prefer to put the higher quality part on the truck, but I’m not sure I want to spend quite that much money on it. I would love some advice if anybody has any experience. Obviously a $500 price difference indicates there would be a pretty serious step down in quality. I wonder how noticeable this would be in operation and how long it would last.

    1. Is there anyone who has put an aftermarket motor in? Do they last well?

    2. Are there specific parts stores or brands I should look at over others?

Any thoughts or advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

I can't offer advice on the aftermarket window motor, but I bought the Toyota driver side window motor for my 1st gen a few years ago. I think it was more like $250 at the time.

At $500, I would try the aftermarket version. It's not a difficult job, and the $$ saved will be well worth it if the motor is ok.

Just noticed on rockauto, that VDO/Continental has one, part number WL42066, for $20. I would be very tempted to try that one first.

I always see Tundra doors on Offerup that are usually dirt cheap. I’d check out all your local marketplaces and junkyards to find it.

Aftermarket might be ok. Idk. I usually don’t trust aftermarket electronics. Nope!

I agree with your opinion on aftermarket parts for our Tundras. However, with such a large price difference on a fairly simple item as window motor, it might be worth the $500 savings to give the $20 part a try. If this was a timing belt or brake master cylinder, then absolutely not.

This has been helpful y'all - Im not sure I want to go through the trouble on finding a marketplace/junkyard part that matches - although it may be the better option. Ive consulted a trusted mechanic friend and he directed me toward some brands that he said would be quality aftermarket replacements. (Dorman being one of them) Will likely cost around $60 vs the $580.

dt325ic - Thanks for looking into it! the $311 original part might be hard to turn down... but right now im leaning toward trying out the Dorman part.

This seems like a reasonable course to take, it's not a terribly difficult job if it does fail again.

    Thanks again!

Get the aisin part off rock auto. Same manufacture as OEM. Just installed one a couple weeks ago. Not sure if you can get just the motor or if you have to do regulator and motor. Was about $60
    Edit- Link
Can only get with regulator and motor together if you want Aisin.
Good luck getting everything unbolted with the window all the way down.

Thanks nick b - I trick I learned from somebody, if a motor is failing typically a sharp tap with a hammer will get it working temporarily. This worked for me, and I was able to align the bolts with the access holes.

Unfortunately I had only purchased the motor, and when I got the assembly out last night, it looked to me like replacing the regulator would be important. One arm was slightly bent, and one of the plastic bushing pieces was broken. Could be what had added stress to the motor originally.

Mine had a very bent arm and is the reason I replaced. Window wouldn't align when closing.
You can get just the regulator from rockauto that is Aisin brand if you feel it's necessary to replace.

Meant to update this thread after I had finished this but never got around to it.

I ended up using the Dorman motor and regulator because it was available locally same day. Its been working very well so far - if I do this again at the passenger side (or if the Dorman fails) I plan to use the Aisin part - Thanks for the recommendation Nick b.

I may be in for this sooner than later. I noticed the other day that my passenger window makes a plastic-gear sounding noise when it gets to around halfway down or so. Only when rolling down. Maybe I just need to lube.

When I did my driver side I ran dry lube on the channels on both sides, did seem to make a bit of difference for both sides.

not sure about the noise when rolling down though.

on second thought I remember getting some resistance while rolling down from some of the rubber parts before I added dry lube, so it may help.
