What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Welcome aboard! Starter replacement is fun on these. Probably a few threads on the subject. It lives under the intake manifold. I was able to replace mine without completely removing it, but you gotta have long enough arms and nimble fingers to do so.

 

It’s just turning bolts really. I did not want to drain the coolant or the fuel rail, so unbolted the intake and put blocks between it and the motor to give me enough room to work on the starter bolts. Worked out. I’m still using my original starter, I just took it out, opened it up and replaced the 2 large copper contacts around 110k miles or so. Put 160k on it since then.

p.s. you’ll wanna put a new set of intake gaskets on when you do this job. OEM parts only for these.

 

I tried to buy a new starter and the Toyota tech talked me out of it. Said in 20 years he’d never seen one fail. Sold me $13 worth of contacts instead.

 

Looks like Toyota doesn’t sell the 27F battery anymore when I check around. I did find one dealer with some leftover supposedly. I’ll have to check tomorrow to confirm inventory. $120 clearance price. Costco has their Interstate version for $99 as a backup.

 

We’re still getting them in…

Perhaps get that $20 contacts kit & rebuild the factory unit you pull out. Good learning, factory part ready on the shelf, or sell/gift it.
You'll want to know if your timing belt was done, should've been at 90k & 180k. You're not too far past the 2nd change that it's worth verifying.

I am losing a battle to rust, so it’s kind of hard to do. I was supposed to go look at a house today with a carriage house barn garage. Perfect to install a lift. Sure enough battery is close to dead since I let it sit idle yesterday. I did get my money’s worth out of the 8 yr old battery.

My daughter was just married to another amazing young lady bout a month ago. I have zero problems with it.
When she was young she was incredibly adorable. People were always warning me of ‘when she grows up….’ My response (jokingly at the time) was always “when she grows up she’s going to be a lesbian, so no worries there.” Never considered the possibility of it becoming true.
I still haven’t told her about that.

You sure it's the starter?

Just seen so many 'no start' threads around here where it was battery, cabling, fuses, or alternator causing issues.

Two pieces of wisdom I'd impart, in case you don't have a ton of wrenching years under your belt:

1) Reference materials ... YouTube videos are great reference material for general overview, but make sure you watch a few of them, because 3 out of 4 videos I watch on anything, someone is doing something (or multiple things) wrong ... be sure to use them as just that, a general overview of the job. Consult other more-professional reference texts for a "more widely accepted" approach. The Factory Service Manuals (FSM) for our trucks are posted here on the forum in a reference thread, you should be able to find pretty easy with Search. Chilton/Haynes manuals usually have some pretty solid DIY shortcuts if you happen across them, but are sometimes genericized.

2) There are some hackish ways to do things that will save a lot of time & effort like the shortcut @KNABORES posted. I'm an avid zip-tie user, myself, like when I did my valve cover gaskets recently, I unbolted a few bits, then zip-tied those and their hoses out of the way so I had more room to work. Actually did the same with my alternator install recently, and for the same reasons. Its not like these trucks have super-cramped engine bays, but anything you can do to free up space saving you from extra labor, extra money on gaskets, or busted knuckles is a win.

 

Finally got my truck to turn over this afternoon. Had to clean off the white crusty blow around the terminal clamps. Just barely got over the hump but she ran so now it’s off to buy a battery tomorrow after I disconnect the old battery to give it some overnight rest.

Today I hit 200,000 miles coming back from a camping trip. Looking forward to the adventures the next 200,000 miles has in store.



To my surprise, I averaged 17MPG with about 30-40 miles of mountain driving. Checked only freeway MPG’s on the way back and… 19! Really happy cause I’m averaging around 10mpg city driving.

 

@Voss Weren’t you doing much worse on the mpg prior to a recent tuneup? I can’t remember if it was you that recently replaced your upstream O2 sensors or not.

 

So having somewhat learned my lesson, 2nd trip to Home Depot for more mulch!
1700 lbs this time! She handled considerably better than last time!
But damn, things are really starting to look better around here!

BTW, anybody notice that I have two different color whites here... I'm assuming sometime in her past life she has had a bed transplant!

 

Wait - those mid-bed rail tie downs?

 

I believe the 4 body tie downs are aftermarket. There certainly were 4 jagged holes they were shoved into. I had to chamfer the holes to get those things to sit pretty! Not installed by myself.
I did put in 2 - 5ft Uni-Struts on the inside, plus there are two more front of the bed down low.
This truck spent part of it's life on a farm....

 

I only see a difference between the bumper and rest of the truck.

Curious, nowhere nearby to get bulk mulch? Maybe different there, but over here you can get 2x the mulch for same price, and it's better mulch.

 

I did replace my O2 sensors but my city mpg got worse. Freeway mpg has improved a lot.

 

That’s interesting. Wish I had an explanation for that one.

 

I drove fast too but I barely touch the pedal to average 85mph-ish. Ever since JBA the Y-pipe went in I lost some low speed torque but gained at higher speeds. I think this has something to do with it.

 

I think it’s an optical illusion. The doors having the body trim and the bed being naked, is eyeball trickery. That’s how I see it.

Are you certain it's the starter? What are your symptoms? Had a lot of people post on here that they were certain it was the starter going out only to find they had other issues.

 

This was last weekend and I posted these in my build thread as well but just wanted to share some Moab camping pictures. It's perfect down there this time of year before it gets way to hot to do anything.
