I really like my 06 double cab limited. But I can never read the time or temperature while driving in daytime. The lights are so dim and daylight eliminates visibility of the reading. Don't know how to fix this. Certainly not problem enough to pull the dash.

At high RPM, mine sounds rough. Kinda raspy. I'm guessing it's the hairline cracks in the exhaust manifolds that was common.

If we're talking about 1st gens... my stupid gauge cluster is a mess. My fuel gauge wanders all over the place. My parking brake indicator will not shut off in cold weather. My oil pressure gauge goes to zero at stop lights. My speedometer is 5 mph slow, it's gotten me pulled over. The little light indicating which gear I am in is burned out in the "drive" position.

My truck runs great, but I'd never guess that looking at my gauge cluster.

Ergonomics aren't quite right. The steering wheel needs to move forward and back as well as tilt. That would fix the ergo's for me. When my legs are comfortable, the wheel is too far away and when I get the reach to the wheel right, my legs are too crunched. Maybe I will evolve longer arms.

The placement of the starter! Why, on God's green earth did they put it under the intake manifold? Some form of Draconian torture wished upon by Toyota on it's owners? $1200 I hope I hope I don't have to spend again for a long long time (prior owner put a NAPA starter in it, bad bad bad! OEM only folks!!).

Yeah I agree, the HVAC control display in sequoia limited is impossible to see in daylight. Poor design that makes you wonder how toyota didn't catch that.

My tundra suffers terrible episodes of the dreaded dash rattle. I've "fixed" it a couple times just for it to return. It's infrequent enough that I don't put more effort into fixing it, but when it does happen it's very annoying.

Starter replacement is an ancient Japanese samurai warrior tradition. Replacement teaches skill, patience and determination, only the most deserving will accomplish this feat. It's a great achievement that will bring honor to your name. Congratulations.

Seriously I think it's a Toyota thing. I've had a few different Toyotas that had difficult starter locations.

    Purely from a maintenance perspective....

After seeing the rear axle stuff @bmf4069 has dealt with, I might list that as one. SAIP in the later models. Honestly, the cumbersome process to rehab valve cover gaskets is a pain in the ass, the fact you have a couple places FIPG is require seems dumb to me. difficulty of starter replacement seems stupid.

From a wear/tear perspective, the window rattle at partial-open state and access cab rear window road noise are probably the two big ones for me, but I've had the rear xtra cab rear window noise in other trucks, I know it's related to seals sandwiching over time. Still annoying.

Everything else I generally like, I think. I'd prefer my cluster had white numbers for the speed etc. The fact I need to sand things to get them white seems ignorant.

For me is not having a cabin air filter. Also the fact that our trucks use a timing belt instead of a timing chain, not that you wouldn’t have issues with timing chains but would have been better.

I wish there were more aftermarket parts for the 1st gens. Seems like more and more companies are forgetting about us or the market isn't there (lies).

That was the one thing I didn’t like when I bought mine new. I think the upside is that it lasts longer if it’s underneath the intake manifold rather than mounted to the bottom of the block. Less road salt/water getting to it than if it were underneath. Only downside is having to replace it and that could be a nightmare if you can only work in your driveway and it’s 5 degrees out with a -10 degree windchill!

Slow retracting seat belts of course. cleaned mine, sanded down the guide, and used liquid silicone. To this day it still burdens me.

Also much less heat in the valley, which is what really kills starters. Still on my original.

Most annoying thing are the cheap screws and bolts all over that rust. Why on earth save on pennies. Rust on screws holding down windshield wiper fluid, differential drain plug, screw on top of differential, ......
Next annoying thing, no protection for the ABS sensors. It takes just a few metal covers. If you go off-road you can break them off and the Christmas lights come on.

You haven’t worked on many vehicles have you lol? This are one of simplest trucks to work on.

I really don’t have any major complaints other than what comes with any vehicle this age. She’s been a solid rig, at least for me.

Exactly, my BIL found that out the hard way with a BMW recently. I warned him, and he still ignored me, even after I worked there 3-4 years.

The best way to I can describe it, if every other car manufacturer can make an engine and transmission bolt together using eight bolts, BMW will figure out a way to make eighteen bolts fit in the same spot lol.

AND make sure you had to replace three or four other things. Gotta replace the alternator? Cool, but you better remember to get the alternator bracket seal, else you'll have an oil leak just from changing your alternator. Because that makes sense, right? If I didn't know any better, I'd swear it was engineered job security.

If you can get to all those pink plastic phallic things that hold in the top of the dash and grease them you can get rid of it. You can actually get to one of them on the far right of the dash by taking off the panel holding the glove box light when you open the glove box. Wiggle the dash at that point and you can see/hear it squeaking.

My BMW did have a trap door in the trunk to access the fuel pump and associated lines. Made road side repair of said lines (pinholes after 22 years) rather easy. Also had a pre-VANOS motor. So simple and reliable.
