2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

Im not sure you need to buy a Capstone to get Lexus level quality and tech. A loaded Limited or base Platinum will get you that if not more.

I test drove the new NX, new Macan and the GV70 before I bought a 22’ Tundra Limited on a whim because someone passed on it.

My truck is pretty loaded with the available options, but it has everything those 3 cars have if not more. The NX infotainment screen looked cheap and already dated. Tons of cheap piano black. Leather felt no better than the whatever-tex in the Tundra. Ride was nice but not amazing. Overall very boring car inside and out.

 

I’ve yet to see a higher trim 3rd gen in person, but based on your comment, Toyota must’ve really stepped up their game. Because, previous gens were not even close to being in the ballpark. My 2.5 gen Limited was far from “luxurious”

And just for argument’s sake, the NX and Macan are the low end CUVs of their respective brands. I don’t imagine you have many car buyers in your group of people cross shopping Porsches and Tundras.

 

Hey all - I’m new here and new to the Tundra universe.

I’ve been driving full size pickups since 2015 - I’ve had a 2016 F150 Lariat, a 2018 F150 Lariat and a 2021 F150 King Ranch. The 2 Lariats were 3.5L Ecoboosts and the King Ranch was a 3.5L Powerboost Hybrid.

I loved the Lariats, and kept upgrading to higher option packages. I got the 2021 due to the redesign and ordered it with every single option available except the fold flat seats. King Ranch, high option package, Powerboost hybrid, FX4, Max Trailer Tow, 7.2kW pro power onboard, etc. EVERYTHING.

When I got the 2021, I was immediately unimpressed with the handling. Spongy as could be - tons of body roll even in light cornering, etc. I replaced the stock (FX4) suspension with the Falcon 2.25" SPORT TOW/HAUL SHOCK LEVELING SYSTEM and 35” Falken Wildpeak AT3/W tires. I loved the stance of the truck and the handling, but the ride was brutal. Just so uncomfortably harsh. Rattle your kidneys on the way to the grocery store harsh. Even worse, the rear shocks were so loud over ever single crack/expansion joint in the road that it was embarrassing to drive the truck. My young daughters made fun of it. I quickly grew to HATE the truck.

I made the decision that I needed to get a new ride. With my heart now set on a 3’rd gen Raptor, I ordered one in February knowing it would be 6-12 months until delivery. Luckily with the used car market how it is I was able to sell the 2021 F150 King Ranch and make quite a bit of money in the process. The broker I work with got me a great deal on a 2022 1794 Tundra he got his hands on for me to lease as an “interim” truck that would hold it’s value and allow me to flip out of once my Raptor comes in.

Well… let me tell you. I’ve had the Tundra for about 24 hours now and I COULD NOT BE ANY MORE IMPRESSED. The level of refinement, the ride quality, the styling and presence of this truck are just so great. It’s quicker than the Powerboost (probably due to the heavy E-rated 35’s I had on it), it handles better, and is SOOOO much more comfortable.

The feature sets are similar but different, with the Tundra being slightly less equipped, but I just like the truck better. The multilink rear suspension, the lighter weight, the balance of handling and ride quality, the fact that it’s not a hybrid (no fake engine noise in electric mode, no chime in reverse, no incessant auto start stop, no spongy regen brake feel, no ridiculously high weight, etc.) are all positives in my book.

To sum it up: I like the truck. A lot. And I’ve had a lot of great cars and trucks. Who knows, maybe it won’t just be an “interim” truck after all.

The Macan is still a Porsche, and almost $80k car. The NX I drove was in the high $40’s and I sat in another that was $55k. Low end is very subjective here, these arent cheap or base cars.

I do agree not many are cross shopping these. I wasnt even shopping for trucks at all. I needed a vehicle to haul mail for my ecommerce company. I saw the Tundra pop up and test drove it because it was close to my house. I was blown away that trucks were this nice now. It had every feature I wanted (surround view, good audio, sunroof, heated/cooled seats, adaptive cruise, great materials etc.), has a 6.5ft bed and can tow 10k lbs for under $60k? Decision was easy.

Ive never been in a 2.5 so I couldnt tell you how they changed. All I know is the new Tundras at higher trims are damn nice. Its all opinion though. I mean look at the last page of this thread, people cant even agree if Infiniti is a luxury brand. Im sure those same people will rip me for my opinion on the Tundra

 

That's.... quite the cross-shopping... But as louscrw said, the NX is the 2nd cheapest car Lexus makes and its base price is under $40k. The base model has the same "leather" Toyota has except it's called "NuLuxe" instead of "Softex". If you really want to get an idea of what Lexus makes, the cheapest I'd say is to look at no less than an ES 350 with the Ultra Luxury package or better yet the LS. SUV side the new LX.

 

First measured full tank on 91 with the Powerboost showed 19.4 on the trip computer, 19.2 by hand. Burned the dealer’s tank before I got to this one. Driven in normal mode as opposed to sport or eco. 50-60% highway, the rest stop and go trips mostly under 10 minutes. Just 775 miles on her. Occasional heavy throttle bursts as I got over 600 miles and felt closer to the end than the beginning of break in. Highway at varying speeds but some 75-plus towards the end of the tank. The rest of the time very gentle with heavy electric motor use and lots of coasting when I didn’t have to use the power to merge. It is Just now staying over 50 degrees during the day here.

Just put in a tank of 89 and switched to eco mode. Gonna try to be easier on her for the next tank but won’t totally baby it. I will accelerate when I need to and not worry about planning it to avoid throttle, just like I have been. Judging by the initial highway average headed home 20 or 21 all around on this truck won’t be difficult and 24 if I hypermile it on a road trip.

Technology is generally amazing. To get within a hair of 19 on my 09 Crewmax I’d have to drive in an almost dangerously conservative way for a long road trip and never go over 65. If I buried the pedal to merge I’d be in a hole for that tank’s average it was very hard to get back out of. Even for my 04 Dakota Crew Cab with small V8 and 4900 pound curb weight over 15mpg overall consistently was hard and took a lot of very focused driving.


I managed over 19 on this truck in mixed conditions driving it hard when I need to or want to, and then making up for that when conditions allowed me to be super easy on the throttle without blocking traffic.

After this next tank of 89 me and Sport mode will probably become very good friends.

 

The NX Hybrid base price is $42.5k, the sub $40k NX isn’t even available in the USA. Thats a higher base price than the ES, which Ive been in as well. The ultra luxury package is only $49k on that. The other NX I was in was $55k.

The LS is $76k base price, most models will push $90k. The LX is around $100k at most trims.

Compare a $55k Lexus to a $55k Tundra. Of course a $100k LX will be nicer than a platinum, but thats <2% of the cars Lexus sells a year. The majority of Lexus vehicles will be ~$50k.

The point is you dont have to spend $80k on a Tundra to get Lexus tech and quality. You’re comparing the very top of the line to make your argument. The average Lexus is not a 6 figure LX/LS.

 

Because the other MFG’s have very different motors in the HD’s. Ford’s 6.2 and 7.3 and completely different families than the 5.0 and the old 5.4/4.6.

And GM’s HD motors, while based on the LS/LT, are iron block and pretty different.

Rams HD 6.4 is literally just a bored/stroked 5.7. They used to have the 5.7’s in the HD’s

 

You’re not kidding. The Lexus GX is as old and dated as a car can get these days. It JUST got Android Auto this year.

 

Not Tundra’s maybe. But Ram’s and Ford’s, absolutely. The modern pimp’d trucks are really nice. My coworkers 2018 F150 Platinum had massaging seats


People complain about a $70+K truck, but of all the vehicles I would actually think about spending that much on, a truck is it. At least its capable and nice.

 

If you want to know what the average Lexus vehicle has to offer, look at their sales leaders. The RX is Lexus. Everything else they sell here is insignificant in comparison.

 

At a $70K price tag I am not looking at a 1/2 ton anymore though.

Also for those of us who don’t care if our truck is old as balls, if I am looking to spend $70K on a vehicle I am also going to consider keeping my old truck and looking at other segments. For $70K I can buy a pretty nice car or SUV. In fact if I keep the old Tundra and just fix things and do maintenance I could trade in another vehicle like our SS which was retaining value like a boss before COVID-19, and my $70K plus a trade gives me an MSRP budget of over 6 figures.

Not that I’ll ever be able to bring myself to part with that SS.

 

And you can get an Avalon that has pretty much the same features, options and trim as an ES. A big part what you pay for with the "luxury" segment is service. When my wife takes her ES to get an oil change she gets a loaner that doesn't smell like Jack in the Box and they don't even ask her to refill the tank. And you get an NX rather than a Corolla. The coffee isn't burnt and there are no visible butt cracks anywhere.

People pay extra not to have to hob nob with the rif raf. Kinda like shopping at Target vs. Wal Mart. Personally, I'm a Wal Mart kinda guy.

 

The GX is over a decade old now I think? The LX just got a refresh but is also pushing $100k.

Lexus’ are great, but theyre very conservative for luxury vehicles. German brands and even Genesis now blow them away at the price point. Their main selling point nowadays is cost of maintenance.

 

This is exactly what sold me on a truck. Having a quiet comfortable ride with the option to tow a midsize skid steer if I ever needed to is hard to pass on. In reality the most Ill ever tow is my Duc, but its nice to know I can do a lot more.

 

At 60k, my Tundra is a bargain. It is a mechanical twin of the new LX at half the price. And the luxury is plenty too with the same tech and safety systems as the LX. Actually, Tundra wins in tech, given the larger screen and rear locker.

Only thing a bit worse than the 120k LX is the leather and interior materials. However, everything is relative. This Tundra has better interior luxury than my Tesla Model S, and it is worse than my Cayenne. Given I drive my kids around and use the truck for camping and fishing trips, I do not need it to be ultra luxury.

PS: The Limited Tundra materials and overall interior feel more luxurious than any F150 trim, even the highest ones, imho. Had a Raptor; there was some leather in there, but the rest of the plastics feel way cheaper than this Tundra.

 

My employee solely drives his PowerBoost in sport, and I can see why. It pulls like no other half ton I’ve driven. Enjoy!

Also, just for reference, last 4500 miles on my Ram Etorque work truck (I reset trip every oil change) is 18.2mpg. This has been roughly the last 2 month here in Alaska. Half 4x4, half Auto 4hi, on studded winter tires, parked outside so ample remote start warm up, mixed driving, and I drive it like I’m not paying for the gas, lol. Very impressed.

You don’t have to tell me, I’m the owner of one of those $70K+ trucks…2021 Ram 1500 Limited.

 

I guess you haven't been in a Platinum or Limited in a while.....

 

That sounds great in theory. Yet at the end of the day, about 1 in 5 F-series trucks have drivetrain issues during the initial buyer's ownership. Historically, even with complete redesigns (which I would argue are not actually ground up new--the 3rd gen Taco and the 3rd gen Tundra both use many parts, including engines, that have previously been in use in other platforms), Toyota doesn't average anywhere near that. Toyota is the manufacturing case study for university students all over the world, not Ford.

We'll see how common the '22 issues are and if that throws a stick in Toyota's spokes.

 

IMHO if fresh turbo cases are still popping up in the 2nd half of 22 Toyota has a very serious problem on its hands. The minor initial production glitch case is dead in the water and the recall arguments start.

June or July is the limit of its customer base’s patience before they start demanding more hard evidence it’s getting traced and rectified. People will start to ask if this really is strictly a low mileage issue or if there will be bad turbos lurking out there that will just barely survive the factory warranty period. People will start to expect AT MINIMUM a 'just in case' extended warranty like they did on the AIPs.

Dashboard Light. Go to the F-series page. Drivetrain issues are a whopping 18% of trucks. (20% would be exactly one in 5). For comparison, that’s 300% of the Tundra’s rate.

 

Will be interesting to see in a couple years when they have data on the 3rd Gen.

 

So Tundra's 6%? I don't know if I would be all that upset over 12% difference.

Oh wait, I am not, because I drive one and my world has not fallen apart so far.

I guess I fall into that 18% too. My throttle body crapped out at ~90k miles/6 years into ownership. Costs me $112 and 10 minutes of my time to swap it. I really felt that one.

Wait, are you talking about the Tremor with factory 33's, 3.73 gears, front LSD, rear locker, and 4Auto Raptor locking transfer case?
