Towing a 5th Wheel Camper

I pull a Jayco HT Eagle 27.5 fifth wheel with my 2015 Tundra SR5 double cab with the 5.7 engine and 6 speed. Bumper to stinger is 31 feet. Added Firestone airbags with a compressor behind the back seat and a remote control. Inflate the rear tires to at least 65 pounds and the airbags to 30 pounds. Average about 8 mpg. Try to hold the rpm's to about 2000. This rig has a Reese Revolution hitch so the trailer actually turns under the trailer and not on the fifth wheel. The stinger wedges into the fifth wheel to keep it from turning there. Allows me to do a full 90 degree plus turn with the truck when necessary. By the way, this truck is rated 3/4 ton.

 

I have been reading these posts very carefully. How did we get up to 85 mph when original post said 75-80 and was quoted several times?

 

We need more people here with knowledge and opposing views. Name calling and insults before you know what someone is about doesn't help anyone figure out the facts.

I'm constantly amazed when people try to say that the Tundra is a 3/4t.
You say it is rated. I'm asking, by whom?
Include a link, not just your uncles brothers stepsister heard it at the salon.

 

That is what I like to see facts...Unless of course you are thread jacking and playing shenanigins....I never learned how to spell that. Tundra is a 1/2 ton truck with a 3/4 ton attitude. If you live on attitude it could be a very dangerous thing.

 

It's really not even a question. The payload and tow limits are stuck to every door jamb. I'm thinking I smell a troll.

 

not sure what a troll smells like. I have overloaded my Tundra, even though I know I should not. Being on this site gives me more perspective as to how smart that is and what the margin of error is. Not sure I would overload again.

Texas State Title says it is 3/4 ton.

Don't know about that. I was surprised to see that. I think Toyota did that to get around fuel economy that 1/2 tons have to meet. They made the truck just heavy enough to get it out of the 1/2 ton truck. It still does not have the axle of the Ford's or Chevy's, but according to one Toyota Dealer I talked to, it has the same breaking as other 3/4 ton trucks.

 

Sorry guys, I gave up on pulling the fifth wheel with the Tundra and moved on to a bigger truck with a diesel. No comparison with the new truck and the Tundra. I really liked the Tundra, but for me going to the bigger truck was the right decision.

 

Makes perfect sense, especially if a fifth wheel is in play. Best of luck with the new truck. By the way, what did you replace the Tundra with?

Isn't towing just following the numbers. The important number is cargo capacity, not towing capacity. Just because something can be dragged down the road, doesn't mean it's safe nor should it be. The yellow sticker on the drivers door jamb will list the cargo capacity. Add up all passenger, added accessories, cargo in your truck, hitch weight and loaded RV tongue weight with propane, batteries etc. Normally you run out of tongue weight long before towing capacity. Adding bags etc do nothing to increase your cargo capacity. As others have pointed out, with the towing package the brakes are great. My double cab tundra has a 1528 cargo capacity. We have towed a 30' Jayco all over the mountains of the west with no issues. But it's only my wife and myself and we have minimal cargo in the truck. Tongue weight is about 12 to 13% of the loaded trailer. A 5er will almost always push the cargo capacity or exceed it. I love my Tundra but doubt I would ever tow a 5er with it, just not enough weight capacity. I love my family and respect others so try and drive safely, typically driving at about 60 mph is our sweet spot as far as fuel efficiency. We average about 9 to 11 towing, 18 to 20 not towing, all depending on terrain. Happy Camping !

 

Those trailers are probably overweight for the truck, even though they're geared right and have enough power to pull it. You can tow until you have the total of your payload or towing capacity, whatever it hits first.

Ie. Your hitch weight on a bumper pull is 10-15%, call it 12.5% average.

Say your payload is 1400 lb, theres 400 lb of passengers, 100 lb for a tonneau, 250lb of cargo and 50lb for the hitch. That leaves 600lbs of payload for the trailer hitch weight. 600/0.125 = 4800, means your maxed out at a fully loaded trailer of 4800lb. That's the real way of figuring out your tow capacity

 

I pull a 32 foot Crusader Lite 5th wheel with my 2012 Tundra. Installed some airbags early on. We get about 7-8 miles to the gallon, brakes get replaced more than they should.
