I’m researching now, so if anyone has some good threads to turn me to that would be great. Supposed to leave town Sunday.

Symptoms, about 3 weeks ago, funny air pump sound at cold start up. Fairly loud but went away after about 45 seconds.

Now on this trip, I noticed lack of power pulling hills, but still pulled at 70mph. Now tonight, leaving La Mesa heading to Del Mar, I can’t even get on the freeway or pull the hill on 125 over 35mph. Higher RPM when downshifting makes it worse.

I’m assuming Secondary AIP or the AIP. Feels like plugged Cats. Sequoia has 185k on it and seems well maintained. I’ve only had it for 7k miles.

Any ideas, or a way to bypass this cr@p.

I’m trying to avoid my Moms bringing my truck and trailer down form Santa Cruz to pick me up.

Other threads say $4,000 at the dealership :frusty:

Edit: VSC lights on as well as check engine light. But they have been coming and going since I bought it. Last scan showed a speed sensor or something, but then the lights would go out.

Sounds like your air injection pump and/or AIP valves are dying/dead and your truck is going into limp mode thus the loss of power. Search this forum for "AIP limp mode" and "air injection pump" and you should find some answers to your problem. If you unhook your battery for a few hours you might get a clean start and run to be able to drive, but limp mode will probably come back once you shut down and restart.

The AIP disintegrated on my 2005 Tundra at 95K miles.
The only thing that ever went wrong with it.

Went into limp mode, drove straight to the dealership.
It was about $3.5K to fix and that was 12 years ago...
Dealership gave me a loaner, and I didn't even buy the truck from them.
Although bought my 2014 from them 4 years later...

Plenty of threads on an AIP bypass kit, if legal in your state...

    Good luck...

You for sure went into limp mode. Remington is right. Disconnect the Bat ground strap for a minute is so and reconnect. You will make it home. It will prob take 3 restarts to put you back into limp mode. Just disconnect Bat again and off you go again. I had to this when I was on a road trip and it got me home.

Thanks guys, this has turned into an expensive trip lol. On the way down I got a speeding ticket on 101, 82 in a 65. CHP officer said he was pacing me. I never speed so not sure if I was actually going that fast.:frusty:

Thank you! My brother in laws parents live in Escondido, they said I could park it there till I figure out a tow, or want to work on it.

I always say, there was a reason “it” was traded in. I’ve been tracking down tons of issues with this poor 07’ Sequoia, no idea how it was able to be kept this clean, and have so many issues. And, I way over paid for it. But my girlfriend and the kids love it.

Just got to get the small things sorted out. Carfax showed it was only driven 1,500 miles a year for the past 6 year. Might have been a bad thing :frusty:

I’m not sure, my issue seem progressive. Like over the course of this trip. Awesome that it happened on our first road trip in it!

My girlfriend is like, “What are we going to do?”

My response, “I don’t know about you, but I’m gunna have a cold one.”

Thanks for the show of support. My 06’ Tundra was a handful when I first got it. I put almost $4,000 just into the suspension and timing belt when I first got it. But it’s been solid from the day I fixed everything at 207k to now at 287k.

I had this occur, on a snowy morning around 230AM in the middle of nowhere back on my 2012. I cleared the code with the scan gauge, and it put got me back home, and into the dealer.

I had the same experience and drove from Humbolt to SF Bay area doing this. At least it gets you back home. And on your way home, get online and order the Hewitt by-pass. Worth it!

If I was confused and broke in SD, I would call Keith at Dirty Deeds and pray. I have broken down in other countries, in other cars, and out of the neighborhood, I would much prefer to brake down near a tundra fan with commercial experience and reliability like his. If he doesn't want to see your truck, he will know who does it right locally and reccomend.

Well I bought a secondary air injection pump from O’rielly’s and was going to swap it in the hotel parking lot, but I’m pretty sure the sound is coming from under the intake manifold. That would be the primary pump correct?

I think I’ll be leaving this thing down here in San Diego and taking a rental car back.

Bummer, but I’ll come back with a car trailer and pick her up.

The Secondary Pump in the wheel well is silent, originally that’s where I thought the sound was coming from.

So, anyone think if I clear the code I can get down the road? I’ll just leave it running the whole time

Thanks everyone for the help. Clearing the codes brought the truck back to normal for about 3 starts, then I would have to clear it again.

I got home without any incidents. Now I need to figure if I want to do the Hewitt Bypass, or fix the issue.

I can’t believe the truck would go into limp mode for something this stupid. I was almost run off the highway by semi trucks because I couldn’t get over 35mph.

Bypass kit is so easy and the stupid pump and parts are crazy expensive. I was worried about the environmental impact, but my 01 doesn't have it so it's the same as driving my 01.

    Little update...

I installed the Hewitt bypass, and all was well, up until last weekend.

I was up in the snow and started the Sequoia at about 29*. She’s warming up fine. Go to get on the road, it make the odd wamp wamp wamp sound, and instantly goes into limp mode and Christmas tree dash.

Stupid me, I loaned my Sequoia dedicated Code Reader to my brother in law, and I never put it back in the Sequoia.

So, we made the long trek back down the mountain, at times no faster than 15mph, and swung by a Napa auto. Cleared the code and it has been fine since.

I think when the weather gets better I’ll be pulling the intake manifold and replacing all the parts.

One of the two times in my life I heard a police officer use the "F word"...I was pulled over for 80 in a 65, so I asked him just how he determined my speed. "Radar" says he. So I say "excuse me, sir, but you may notice on my dash a Cincinnati Microwave Escort, the finest commercial Radar Detector on the market. I did not detect your radar...are you certain that is was me that you were clocking?". Needless to say, this pissed him off, and he called me all kinds of names, many including the aforementioned "F word". But he did NOT issue me a ticket!

Do you have to have a code reader to clear the code or would unhooking the batter for a few minutes get you back up and running?

I have Hewitt Bypass kit. Cleared all codes and the truck runs fine. I was told today by my mechanic that it will not pass SMOG with the bypass kit. I guess with the new SMOG laws, the new program that CA uses reads if the ECU has been changed/tampered. The bypass kit "tricks" the ECU to think everything is running normal. So I'm going to take the truck in for a SMOG certificate on Wednesday to see if it'll pass before my registration is due.

I have to smog as well My plan was to warm up the truck, disconnect and remove the Hewitt, and then keep it warm and take it into the SMOG shop. I think as long as it’s warm it shouldn’t kick on the the Secondary Air.

    Maybe I’m wrong

I don’t understand how their new smog equipment can tell if it’s been bypassed. The system functions as if it’s at temp and would never need to engage the pumps. I think you will be fine

The only issue I see is visual.

The Hewitt bypass has a short pigtail which makes it very apparent there is a bypass harness attached. I contemplated lengthening the wires and hiding the harness. But with all that effort I might as well fix the issue. :frusty:
