:facepalm:Amazing. What's more amazing is how many people think "It's 2022. Everyone's cars are reliable at this point."

...Orrrrr...we live in a throw-away culture where our automakers have learned planned obsolescence from smart phones, and no one fixes or keeps anything because we're all being conditioned to buy the next version of the thing.

    Here's my last plug 7. :eek2::eek::eek2::eek:

If only someone had warned everybody on this site about turbo chargers and buying the first year of a new model...

That is exactly the reason I will NEVER own a GM product. They have a habit of f*cking people over. They did it before with their bankruptcy and left the owners to pay for their poorly designed suspension parts because:

New GM’s warranty obligations for vehicles sold by Old GM are limited to the express terms and conditions in the Old GM written warranties on a going-forward basis,” wrote Benjamin Jeffers, a lawyer for GM. “New GM did not assume responsibility for Old GM’s design choices, conduct, or alleged breaches of liability under the warranty.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/gm-...-it-from-impala-repairs-idUSN1E77I0Z820110819

Just can't make this shit up. Screw GM.

I've been actively involved in cars for 30 years now. One thing that hasn't changed in all that time is the notion that the new model, that's only been out 3 months, somehow atones for all the previous sins of that model line. It's used a lot for Ford, GM, and BMW.

"Oh, the 2022 5.3's don't have problems, that was just the 2009-2021 5.3's" as there's literally not one 5.3 more than 6 months old, hasn't been enough time for them to begin having issues.

I mean, we've all seen it with Ford, how many times has it been said "Ford's really improved a lot" and 2 years of hindsight you realize WRONG.

Anyone is naive to think that the same GM engine that's been problematic for over a decade will suddenly be fixed

The 21s had a stop sale due to shit lifters being installed from the factory lol

While we're bashing gm. In the fall had a funeral on west side of state to drive to and we were going to haul some in laws with us. Instead of taking my 220k mile sequoia we rented a 21 Yukon xl. Right in the thick of Seattle traffic it started to run rough and smoke and then threw several codes and basically died. Luckily I was able to get it off the highway and in a parking lot. Almost missed the funeral, very stressful couple hours.

My lesson learned, my 16 year old sequoia with over 200k is much more reliable then a brand new gm. My affection for my first gens have really grown in the last year for several reasons.

I think the date of the bankruptcy determines the line between the old and the new GM warranties. I have no idea about the paint lawsuit. That looks like a much later issue than the bankruptcy. Just another reason not to buy anything from GM, Chevy or Cadillac.

I dunno... you can repair, paint, and modify an older vehicle to make it pretty special. Not so much a wife!

Yeah, I'm soured on the complexity of the drivetrains being trotted out chasing MPG's and emissions standards. 15mpg isn't the end of the world.

I'd love to consider a reasonably priced, low mileage Gen 2.5, but the prices for these used is ridiculous, within spitting range of a new Tundra slightly above MSRP.

I guess the dealerships don't mind overpricing their trucks, otherwise there wouldn't be much inventory parked out front.

Yeah you can. A woman can do wonders with a boob job, a couple of pounds of war paint and some fake eyelashes. It still never quite removes the whining and grating sound of an ex.

I disagree. I am old enough to have had plenty of the "good old" cars... carbs, points, condensers, etc. Yes, the early days of smog motors in the 70s and early 80s were terrible as mfgs's engineers had to learn how to deal with it. But modern vehicles are just so much better, many of the changes driven by the same emissions requirements many like to moan about. More efficient, cleaner, more power, less maintenance. And as for computer and emissions controls in all my years and miles and vehicles I have only had to replace 2 O2 sensors and one MAP sensor.

Like as in a fault in the electric power supply to the actuator? The actuators are electronic. Or something in the software programming?

Turbo “failure” at 4650 miles? After giving it the beans to merge on the freeway? And it worked fine up until then? Sounding more software-ish to prevent full throttle computer expectations vs wastegate position reality. If he had not given it the aggressive throttle input that day, would the computer and wastegate still be happily rolling along today? Did it actually fail? Or just trip the error and reduced power mode due to the unexpected information at full throttle? Is the wastegate really bad???????

Just curious how realistic would it be to replace factory turbos with proven turbos from another manufacturer like Garrett, Borgwarner or Bosch?

Think any of them might start producing a drop in replacement since Toyota cannot seem to catch up with back orders?

A month or two I would have agreed possible or even likely. However Toyota has had months and many many incidents to investigate. If it was software it would have been so much faster and cheaper to update the software than actually replace all of these turbos just from a warranty cost standpoint. I fear the lost goodwill will prove a much larger sum.

Who is the current supplier and what vendor is the wastegate?

Whose to say that Bosch, BW or Garrett don't us the same vendor for their wastegate controller?

Pics and descriptions make it sound like these are not standalone turbo units, but integrated, cast together units with exhaust, wastegate and turbo components all in one. Unique to the truck. Turbo manufacturer’s would have to engineer a specific replacement for them, not something off the shelf.

I bet the current assembly is 3rd party.

Compressor, oil/coolant block, turbine all on the shaft and wastegate controller all as one unit. There could also be the diverter valve / bypass on the assembly as well.
