Stops aren’t a requirement. But I’d rather not rub the frame because well… I live in the rust belt

I’ve been pondering my dad’s 2000 RAV4 if he decides to ditch it. Fantastic beater. Doesn’t need much work. Would be worth shipping across the pacific to me.

I think my must haves are 4wd and the 6ft bed so I can sleep in the camper on hunting trips....I think the only other thing I might consider would be a first gen Sequoia if it was difficult to find a replacement for the truck.

Yep, he won a car at a casino and traded it in for this. He already had a work truck, so he just used it to get around town. Him and I did a lot of camping in it together and used it to bring our dual sports everywhere too, so there's a lot of memories attached. When my Chevy blew up, my dad was looking at a diesel and trailer to do stuff with my Mom in, so he sold me the Tundra and it's evolved ever since.

I've begged and pleaded with him to do a trip with me in my truck now, but ever since he started glamping he has no interest.

I never understood the appeal of a rooftop setup...maybe I'm just a simple man with simple needs, I inflate my air mattress in the bed, crawl in the camper shell and close my eyes for a couple hours

I think I've already mentioned my whole story but I'm feeling like a shifty style post so I'll re-mention.

I wanted an '85 beater RC 5 speed 22r to augment my '13 prius. Got serious about looking once covid hit. Buttered up the wife to the idea and she said "don't buy a POS" meaning an '85 was a no go. I guess it was/is super important to her that I could safely grab one or both kids with my daily driver, not that I drive anywhere on any given day. She also said no F150 or full size truck, she wanted something she would be OK driving and had driven larger trucks in her youth so she was done with that.

My take is/was that our 2018 Odyssey is the primary family vehicle so the 2nd didn't need to meet any real criteria, it could be anything from a smart car to a diesel duallie, but anyone who is married understands that sometimes compromise is best with big ticket items.

Went to the dealer to do a little bit of test driving and went out on the freeway in an I4 SX model. I think it had a scoop even. It was a nice truck, really looked good to me, but 2wd and 4 cylinders just seemed gutless and unexciting and the AC didn't feel terribly useful space-wise.

I asked the wife to go and she test drove a DCLB SR5 v6 and decided that was the best pick. It wasn't really bad price-wise, 35k I think and early covid so no massive chip problems and inventory trouble quite yet, hence some room to chip away at MSRP. My stickler was wanting MT. I think an MT 5 lug woulda been appealing at 28k in the SX model, even with the 4 cylinder, having control of the shifts changes a lot about how a truck drives. I tried to put in for an allocation of AC OffRoad MT but that got denied as expected. Saw a few MT's in town, all OffRoad DCSB, nearly all white (and I really did not want to buy another white truck). One cement popped up and was gone in 24h, I wanted to make a play at it but I was stuck that day with the kids.

I certainly would have liked the 6' bed as the extra foot of space would make it more of a truck but at the same time I have a short driveway so the long bed would have meant parking very close to the garage doors to leave the sidewalk clear. Mostly I was stuck reconciling MT vs LB as I couldn't have both which is/was a bummer. I was trying hard to come to terms with what I wanted vs what a reasonable compromise looked like.

A few months later, up pops the truck I ended up buying and I bite on it b/c it was my price point (28k) and low ish miles (40k) and 3rd gen MT DC in a color I didn't hate and from a dealer who looked legitimate. A few hoops and it rolls off the transport truck, a few more hoops and it's registered. One year later, after some needling, I buy back my '02 Tundra from the friend I sold it to and now I own my '02 RCLB 4x4 v8 and the '16 DCSB 4x4 v6. It's fun to compare the two, the few times I switch from one to the other really spell out the subtle driving differences.

If I could only have one truck, I get stuck in an infinite loop of what would be ideal. Definitely 6' bed would be high on the list, 8' would be even better. The FGT comes the closest to ideal but lacks interior storage space, requiring a shell to gain it back, which then changes it from truck to more of a 4wd van. And placing kids up front on the bench seat may not be ideal safety-wise compared to DC where they have some protection from the front and rear. But the DCSB really isn't much of a truck at all in terms of bed space, I'd probably prefer a T4R if I could get one in MT b/c I don't put much wet/big/dirty stuff in the bed as it is. Wife wanted a shell so I could take the dog, OK cool, so I have two trucks with shells now. It might be nice to have one of them with an open bed but mostly I need a way to quickly remove either shell by myself which means shop space for a roof mounted lift of sorts.

I think if I were forced to sell one, it'd have to be the Tacoma b/c I could still buy one new later. But I'd be pretty sad to let it go, I've done enough work to it that it feels special already and I have long term plans, plus MT is not easy to get and paying $50k + down the line would really be annoying.

Ironically, neither of my trucks is really that great for towing horses to help my bro in law in a pinch which is sort of funny, we both have 2 trucks but mine are toys compared to his.

I think I've effectively come to the conclusion that a full quiver is needed to be fully satisfied, that Dan really is on to something with his plan for one of every year.

You can have a bit more room, keep gear stored in your bed while you sleep, and for those of us with itty bitty beds it definitely has appeal. To each their own for sure.

i think i’d hunt down a niceish early AC with a bad engine. Something i could SAS and not feel bad about. Ive come to appreciate the smaller size. But i’m also on the lookout for a small mechanical diesel, so thats where the swap (and any extra insurance money) would head.

if i was gonna change from a tundra to something else, it would probably be a k5 blazer or late 70’s bronco.

Yeah, I mean ... it could. But i still love my 1st gen and V8. I definitely married "up", and supplied a good, stable base for her to build a damn empire, to the point I'm not pinching pennies anymore. So as long as I can practically afford to put gas in this thing without dropping over $100 at the pump every fill-up, I'll forego the SUV route. It doesn't help that my truck is so damn sexy, though.

I mean ... if dad's on the east coast and not in the rust belt, maybe he needs to call me when he ditches it :D

My parents had a friend when they still lived in Floridistan who had a 1st gen RAV4. This is before I realized the potential. She gave it away 10 years ago for dirt ass cheap on trade-in. It was one of the two tone forest green ones though, and I don't dig on that.

If anything, I'd love one of the 2nd gen 2dr models, in silver. I dunno if any of those made it over here to the US though.

Pops is in Honolulu so a $1200 boat ride would be the purchase price. Not too much rust on it, all mechanical stuff good, very light use (only when we visit and it's been years since we did) and he has EV's coming out his ears, but he likes taking it the 3 miles to the beach b/c he doesn't want to get his nice car dirty. And to costco I think. It has factory leather even.

It's a 4d silver, super compact but big box on wheels that holds a bunch of stuff and super easy to park and drive.

I checked my credit card today to see if I got a refund from a car part that didn't arrive. No refund yet, but noticed a new pending charge for $159 from a music shop.

I completely forgot that on Thanksgiving I had ordered a super cheap guitar. I got an email at the time saying it isn't available and no ETA. A lot has happened since then. My idea was to get that as a bit of a beater, but I have since purchased another beater. Do I need two beaters? No, but do I want two beaters? Of course.

Now what to tell my wife... :anonymous:

The mods are part of why this is a good place. Some of the rules suck, but most can be bypassed by voluntary PMs. Besides, some of the mods have good info, too. Though, I do miss the shenanigans of PHM. :(

True, and many members don't either. I'd say that's a testament to the quality of the group. Even if people leave the Tundra behind, they are still part of the community.

I wouldn't mind what is done elsewhere, a "playground" for the unruly tucked away in a corner so the majority don't have to deal with the shenanigans if they don't actively seek it.

But a full on food fight would ruin this place as it does elsewhere. See also macebook, redthingy, instawaste, etc

I can appreciate that point of view, and even advocated for it at one point. I have since realized that keeping the sand in the sand box without it getting tracked everywhere would be a hard thing to do. Imagine if somebody else were on the opposite side of things for some, and how that could cause riffs in the community. Withholding of help because of differing views on things, snide comments, poisoning of members toward that person, etc. It's not hard to see how it could get out of hand.

The same thing you told us? If you didn't have time to cancel the order, you didn't have time?
Curious though, what was it? I accidentally landed another MIJ Les recently under the Encore branding, lawsuit era I'm thinking, not sure on date yet.

I was going to say this. I realize a few of us don't like the smackdown a few folks have gotten, but there's a point to it. If you don't define basic rules and stick to it, Pandora's box opens. I've seen it plenty of times elsewhere. Shit gets radicalized, and that attracts others who thrive on dumpster fires who turn things into a dumpster inferno.

The kind of moth that likes that kind of flame is rarely a source of positive input, and they also tend to repel the type of people who generate extra positive input to make up for where others may lack. It's a slippery slope, and sometimes it catches people we like, but expecting the moderators to change their behavior and rules (i.e. pushign change across the entire community) instead of expecting a single charismatic person or two to change their behavior is kinda BS if you think about it, big-picture like.

Nothing is perfect for everyone. It doesn't mean you need to open the door for it to be massively imperfect.

And yes, this was my take also. But we've seen it be successful at Tundras.com sister site, which is why I really wanted to see it happen here. I get why it's not happening. My reality is, I wouldn't hang out in that forum even if it was created, there wouldn't be anyone who shares my probably bizarre-ass, irrational-in-today's-world views.

We have touched on it a bit, and I think you'd be surprised how much you may have in common with others. So long as everyone allows for some flexibility, live and let live type stuff, we can usually get along if we view the big picture the same way we do the small picture. Good for the goose, good for the gander.
