City driving. I use for a work truck to service swimming pools. About 15 stops per day. Loaded down with all my chemicals and supplies.

I’m curious to know if the wire harness is ready for the add ons. I want fog lights. The bed lights would be a good addition as would the USB ports in the back of the console.

When I installed the bed lights on my Tacoma, the instructions for installation showed whether it was plug and play. Maybe there are instructions on line somewhere.

Thank you! That's not terrible especially with your use. Our 21 averages 16-17 on the highway driving gingerly.

Would you be willing to do a deep dive on your truck? I've scoured the Internet for info on the 22 SR. There is very little information out there.

Nice looking truck. Thanks for sharing. Those boards look nice. Manufacturer? Would you mind posting an overhead shot so I can see how wide they are?

From a value proposition stand point, I'm really interested in getting one of these Tundra SRs. These are well equipped for the price point.

Does anyone know if there is any variation in the drivetrain to explain the reduced tow capacity of the SR? I see the motor is slightly detuned - an ECU reflash or piggyback tune will solve that and bring the power up past the higher trims. Does the SR5 have upgraded cooling or different rear ends to handle the higher towing? The payloads are the same for all similarly equipped trims. I'm just trying to figure out by SR5 can tow 11k and the SR tows 8k. Is it just as simple as flashing the ECU to increase the HP and I'll be able to tow 11k?

Even if the only difference between SR and the other versions is just a simple ECU tune, modifying the ECU will put you at risk for warranty denial should the engine require warranty service and they find your ECU has been tuned. So..... you'll need to consider that. Personally, I'd just get a SR5 or above if power, stated capacity and warranty terms are important to you.

Also, you probably should test drive an SR, even though it's derated on paper, it may feel nearly as powerful behind the wheel.

Yes, you're correct. Any alteration to a stock vehicle can void a warranty - including wheels/tires, suspension, armor, etc. Regardless, that risk doesn't bother me.

With that said, hopefully someone can answer my question if its just the motor thats detuned on these SRs and the drivetrain is identical. I'm very curious to know. I'd love to buy a base truck and add some performance modifications to bump the power to 500hp+.

Well, seems like a possibly good option for you.

Nissan has a similar twin turbo V6 that they've been using since 2016, they are both called "VR30DDTT" but one version makes 300hp, the other makes 400hp. The two versions are nearly identical, only difference is that the 400hp version uses turbos with built-in turbine speed sensor, and a larger capacity air/water intercooling system.

The 300hp version can be tuned up 500whp, just like the 400hp version can be. It's a good idea to address the intercooling at that point, but both can get to 500whp on stock turbos.

I presume the Tundra would be similar, the Toyota and Nissan twin turbo V6 share very similar design.

It all comes down to turbo size. The original 3.5 Ecoboosts came with dainty little turbos that were good for like 460 crank HP. Then in 2013 they went to slightly larger units that could make about 500 crank. Then in 2017 it bumped a little more and they were good for maybe 550 crank. 2018 they went huge and are now good for about 600 crank. They are big enough that Ford doesn't cut power or air flow based on elevation anymore because they are so big they can provide the full flow the engine needs to make its factory rating even at 12,000'

Agreed. The SR might be the best value in a full size truck regardless of brand. Don’t have the answers to your questions unfortunately but another thing to consider is that the SR *may* have a different rear axle ratio or a different rear axle all together. Also may not have additional transmission cooling needed for towing heavier loads (to be fair I don’t know if the SR5 has additional cooling capabilities or not, just a guess on my part).

Don’t know any of the above for sure but just thought I would throw it out there as another possible reason for the reduced towing aside from a HP and torque reduction.

I imagine since the payload is more than the standard Tundra, they wouldn't throw a lighter rear axle in it so likely a 10.5 ring gear still. Probably just de-tuned motor is my guess

I would think the HP and torque in the SR is enough to tow 10k-11k lbs. Example would be the F150 2.7 ecoboost engine…hp and torque numbers are almost identical to the SR (sr actually has a little more hp and torque) but if you add on the payload package to an f150 2.7 ecoboost the towing numbers jump from 7800lbs to about 10k lbs. Power doesn’t change with that add on but gearing does and I’m sure some other things do as well.

I know the SR doesn't have a Tow Haul mode or manual trailer brake controller. I would hope it would have some sort of transmission cooling because 8500lbs is still a good amount of weight. The travel trailer I tow is only 6, but not having that brake controller is a low blow. I wonder how easy it would be to install the factory one in that slot.

IIRC every 2022 Tundra comes standard with the 3.31.

To others whom have pointed out the lack of a factory installed and integrated brake controller, I'm sure an aftermarket, non-integrated brake controller would work just fine and not be that unsightly.

I'm sure someone else could confirm whether the detuned iForce in the SR still has the transmission cooler. I do believe that it does. However, even that could be added after the fact, could it not?

    EDITED

Regarding towing capacity. Perhaps Toyota feels that the target audience for this trim is the local contractor who tows lighter weights over a shorter distance, therefore they only subjected it to the standard test up to a maximum of 8300 lbs? This would assist Toyota in pushing the remaining target audience to a higher trim level, which would increase their profits. Therefore, the SR components may in fact be exactly the same as the SR5 etc.

I have been driving this truck for a couple months and at 3200 miles. I really feel this still has plenty of power and towing capabilities.

Yep, same here, I have SR as well and unless I compare to SR5, I can't tell it is detuned and it feels peppy. I believe the turbo boost being lower is the only difference, but can't confirm. I plan to put JB4 tune in the future anyway, so that would equalize the power/boost anyway .

Few short highway trips got 20mpg with my SR. The best I got is a round trip , 4h total, going skiing when I got 21mpg highway driving. All is based on the computer telling me the mpg, never measured it at the pump.

That's pretty impressive for such a heavy vehicle. The SR Tundra is basically a better Tacoma.

I bought a 2022 tundra SR double cab with 4x4 for 44000. I am a builder contractor and put a big lumber rack on it. It is working great and the spartan design of the SR leaves less to damage. The optional rubber floor mats are perfect and bed liner is tough stuff. The screen is just the right size and the standard security and remote access on the app are sustainable for easily enjoying music and phone calls seamlessly when hopping in to go to the lumber yard. I towed a full 16' trailer of wet trash just fine and removed the rear seats for tool storage. I am happy. I wanted a f150 but this baby was sitting on the lot ordered and forgotten. I picked it up and do not regret it.
