2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

Yeah. Very uncharacteristic of Toyota. I really think these would have been truly minor hiccups if it weren’t for supply chain issues.

 

No electrical issues in the hybrid CRV so far. Prob one of the smoothest cars I've driven. Hoping the EV Lightning is this smooth since it won't have the 10 spd.

 

Well, one way to consider it... one's internal engine issue, the other external. But, both expensive outside of warranty

 

To be fair, that's not hard to do considering how dated their previous gens were (other than the HUD).

 

I don't understand why Toyota hasn't gotten the hint that people want a flat flooring in the back yet. RAM even has storage cubbies under the flooring on both sides to keep the beer cold.

 

Those in-floor cubbies are an ingenious use of free space.

That requires Macro engineering. Took what 14+ years to get to what they came up with.
This week I almost did a deal, on a canceled order long bed Tundra with the dealer. Due in end of April.
With a valuable to him trade in, the dealer gave me priority.
But then it hit me before committing that I was compromising - getting the longer bed to make up for the smaller cab and for me,
messed up under seat arrangement in the 2022.
I go into some tight places (clearance and turning radius) with my 2018.
I started to wonder if the longer 2022, with the longer bed would even make it.
And then have to deal with a long bed all other times when not using it.
Could not commit without testing it out. Not happening these days
Dealer got impatient with me and sold it. Not feeling any regret. And not for thinking - if I have a turbo failure in the bush.
A Tundra may still happen down the road, but I need more info, and the info I am looking for is based on time - reliability.
But truck space/utility is indeed king with me.
This thread is very valuable to me for the unbiased non-Toyota truck views and opinions.

 

When I see a pic of a Ford driver taking a nap on the flat rear floor of his truck, my first thought isn’t “I wish the rear floor of my truck were flat”; it’s “why is his dumb ass not on the rear seat with a blanket or sleeping bag and a pillow?” And then I think, “must be because he didn’t plan to camp in his truck…it must have broke down on him.”

A sliding reclining rear seat with a fold up bottom and fold down back, an indentation in the rear cab wall and flat load floor with folding lockable storage like in my F series would make the Tundra’s rear cab area class leading. I am sure they can do it but they’re pinching pennies.

When they did away with the Tundra rear seat adjustability for it to fold up I feel like they could have kept it but chose to give one thing and take back another to be cheap.

 

Yeah Tremors are all over the place when it comes to order to delivery date. The base Tremor is basically an XL and starts right about $50K, my MSRP is north of $73K. Lot of difference in the number of chips needed for those two builds. That said, it seems like Canadian orders specifically have been all over the map.

Yeah. I agree—Toyota deleted a lot of things in 2014 at the midpoint of the 2nd gen to save money from engine options to the driver's side grab handle.

Oh I'm well aware. Most people seem to care about looks foremost and "oh that's neat" features after that. I like the Ford's storage cubby that fits neatly under the rear seat when it's up, but there there is no way that I'm going to pick an objectively less dependable truck so I can have it.

Most people are also happy to make a payment every month and just trade for the next shiny thing after the newness of their current ride wears off. That's also not me.

 

I've decided starting my own 60's styled truck company. 2 versions. standard cab and crew. Manual transmission. motor is whatever we fucking decide. Want a radio... we have a hole for that. Wanted heated seats...You can keep chipotle coupons in the glove box. Color choices are white or black along with directions to your local paint shop. We will have no front end but universal mounts to attach the front end of your dreams. A free subscription will be included for an aroma therapy feature (only available in gas scent, sometimes oil depending on what engine we decided on). Exclusive accessory attachment system by our friends at Duc-T-Ape. Tow capacity "Let's find out". Safety rating "No". Multi-function step stool for the bed and our auto start feature is a padded key chain for when you throw your keys to your kids.

Is there a touch screen? Yeah bud, touch or lick any screens you want to add.
Is there enough space in the back? It's a 230 inch truck. I'm sure you'll figure something out.
Do the seats have a massage feature? Get out of my shop maybe someday massengil will make a truck or check Ram, same thing.

ya I loved all the storage in my ram, kinda miss that for sure. I had the ramboxes as well.

 

Yeah, I'm a fan of longterm ownership. Registration and insurance costs drop each year. Never leased a vehicle but been thinking about doing so with a Powerboost. Trouble with leasing I think is any mods you do are worthless at buyout time. For example, I would have a hirise topper installed on an F150, not debatable, it's a necessity. I really don't know if we'll try a different vehicle in order get more MPG vs the simple, reliable 2019. We'll look around some but I'm kinda cold about the complexity of everything else trying to meet emissions goals.

but the F150 ranks a 2/5 In Consumers Report reliability behind the F250 and Ram 1500. Ram Classic is the worst reliability. Tundra is I would think too new to rank still.

That video is a big part of why I ordered the Tremor.

 

Ford has great features for sure and a great layout, it was mostly well refined, I ruled it out mainly to the drivetrain being clunky and not being confident in reliability.

that said, I’m not confident in the tundra quality and reliability at the moment either, and gmc either .

This. It's honestly something that makes me raise an eyebrow. Anyone with a 2014+ truck really doesn't need to even consider the '22. Tundras are 10+ year trucks. If you have a 2014, start looking at new trucks around 2024. 2016, around 2026.

If you tend keep your trucks for well under 10 years and you want the new shiny thing, who cares about long term reliability and not having all the features? You'll be under warranty for most if not all of your ownership. Go buy a Ford or a Ram or a GM and get all the whizz bang features.

 

it’s not that simple though, I don’t want to be on the side of the road with a turbo out or a lifter , etc

I hugely don’t want window seals leaking wind noise , that would be huge piss off

or constantly at the dealer getting shit fixed

In addition , it’s not all about the features, clunky drive trains and gmc holding out features is also a bigger consideration

 

I know that this is the Toyota v. Ford thread, but please indulge me. While waiting patiently for a 2022 Tundra to materialize (no, I didn't reserve a pig in a poke back in Oct) I have become tempted by the fruits of another. Specifically, I drive by a Ram dealer every day that has, gasp, 10 or so pick-ups *in stock*. Now, I'm a dyed in the wool Toyota guy (5 4runners, 2 pick-ups, 1 Tundra and 1 Tacoma) and haven't owned an American car in 30 years, but the Ram gets great reviews and those trucks are just *sitting* there, with attractive incentives to boot. Talk me off the ledge.

 

So wait until 2016 and see what's on the market and how Toyota has addressed the turbos. I get the concern, but for someone with a 2016 it should really be a non-issue. You have another 4 years until you logically should start looking at a new truck.

You think you have a tough choice? I drive a 2005 and actually have reason to buy a new truck. Not alot of good options out there. I've got a deposit down on a '22 Tundra because the turbo issue concerns me less than the lifters in the GM, I've never liked or trusted RAM and I'd sooner walk than own a Ford again.

 

If you value reliability, stick with Toyota. If you only plan to keep your truck for a few years and don't mind potentially going back to the dealer a few times, give Ram a shot.

 

They're cheap for a reason. The Woman's uncle is a sales manager at a Ram dealer. He flat out refuses to sell them to friends and family. Average ownership of a Ram truck according to his dealerships metrics is 4 years. They get traded in quickly because they literally fall apart. They're also extremely popular because Ram will work with low/bad credit individuals with minimal if any downpayment and the incentives help roll in the negative equity.

 

This a major psychological impediment to buying a Ram. I can't help remembering when I had my 1st Toyota at the dealer for warranty work, which consisted of 1 minor adjustment and talking to a guy with a Dodge (the dealers were combined back then) who had a legal pad with 3 pages of warranty complaints.

 

Its not really a tough choice, I was just thinking a new truck would be nice and trying to figure out what I would like. It seems at the moment all the brands are having too many issues, I’m guessing Toyota gets it right first , the tundra is still at the top of my list .

I don’t need to keep trucks for 10 years if I don’t want, that said I haven’t ruled that out either with this one I have.
