Thinking I should get better brakes

I have decided to go with OEM all around and just up grade my Brake hoses to Stainless Steel. Has anyone done this Setup? Thanks

 

Not likely many folks have gone this route, but I applaud your decision. I firmly believe that since our OEM brakes are more than capable of clamping down with enough force to fully engage the ABS system, the issue is not pads or rotors. I’m looking forward to hearing how your brake feel changes, and I bet you get a more positive feedback in the pedal due to minimized hose swell…. Please post results.

 

Hmm. Funny I stumbled across this thread, I just ordered a set of OEM pads for the front and rear at 60k. These are the best brakes I’ve ever had on any vehicle, so I figured why mess with a good thing. I am curious about a few of the other options out there, though… Let us know how your new choice works out!

 

I went OEM too. Just waiting for them to come in from Sparks this week. I just wish they would communicate and answer an email.

 

consumer reports seems to disagree with this. Or at least for some model years they do.

 

Are you running stock rotors with EBC yellow? My rotors and brake pads seem to have started vibrating before it hit 30k...

 

Up front currently I'm running ATL double drilled and slotted w/ EBC yellow. Rear are Stop Tech drilled and slotted w/ EBC orange. Last brake set, pads and rotors, only lasted 20k mi. But, that was primarily off road and hard, "drive it like I stole it," desert driving. The last set was Power Stop slotted and EBC yellow front and rear.

 

I'm looking for front EBC yellow pads for a 2019 and debating going with Stop Tech or EBC rotors.

 

Installed these yesterday. Hawk Talon slotted and drilled rotors and Hawk LTS pads, front and rear. Was wanting Hawk Super Duty, but couldn't find any in stock. Hoping these do well towing 7k lb travel trailer this summer.

Yes, front and rear. Only been on for 1 day, but really liking so far. They have a lot of bite.

 

Pulled the trigger on EBC slotted rotors and Green Stuff pads. I know a lot of people recommend Yellow Stuff pads but I guess I'm not an extreme enough driver.

 

Are greenstuff 1 step less aggressive than yellow?

 

It's great that there are options for brake upgrades, but I have to wonder if instead of a brake upgrade you really need a truck upgrade? Because I know the stock brakes on mine are the best I've ever owned.

If you're running out of brake capacity, I really think you need a bigger truck.

 

Nah. It isn’t that I’m running out of brake capacity, just that it is slower than I feel it should be to stop — meaning the braking distance is much longer than other trucks I’ve driven. And that’s true in all conditions and without any towing or cargo.

it’s a comparative assessment. Not saying the truck brakes are bad, per sé. Just not as effective as they should be on a truck of this size, weight, and cost.

I’m not the only one with that conclusion either. And beyond that, even most major reviewers said the same thing. JD Power. Car & Driver. Here’s what Consumer Reports said. I don’t agree with the major reviewers on all things, but the truck’s extremely low braking score I certainly do.

 

I too was looking for better performance than stock. While my stock brakes never warped on me, the braking distance isn't great. I've had other trucks that had good braking performance but would warp quickly. Combining the pad and rotor upgrade with a complete brake flush should result in better brake pedal feel and shorter stopping distances. Will report back on my findings. 46k miles on the clock and pads still have some life left but nearing replacement soon.

 

If the stopping distance is longer than expected, but you're able to lock up the brakes (ABS engages and pedal vibrates) when flooring the brake pedal on a dry, relatively clean pavement, then you need better tires. If you're unable to lock up the brakes in that scenario, then you need more brake, as in a more aggressive pad.

Pedal feel and initial bite is a whole separate issue that can absolutely be fixed by brake pads, but that doesn't affect stopping distance assuming the same brake pedal application.

 

I got an amazing 21,500 miles out of the stock pads and rotors!
Currently at the shop getting them replaced.

 

I just installed the Power Stop heavy duty, Z36 front pads/rotors. Slightly better than my OEM ones which I felt I had to mash pretty hard to get to a stop. These are a little better/more sensitive.

 

Exactly what I have on front, EBC Greens on rears with DBA T3 Slotted rotors, ( EBC Slotted Rotors for rears were out of stock)..

 

Nice. My standards of "amazing" have changed though. My last 4Runner went over 110,000 miles on the original stock pads. No joke.

 

My wife's 4Runner has over 60,000 miles on it. At the last service they told her they weren't even at 50 percent yet.

My Tundra's poor brake performance was caused by rust. The truck came from NY and I think it was driven in the snow and salt. Then left to sit without being cleaned. The pads couldn't slide freely and ate the rotors.

 

I'm an anomaly I guess. Almost 73k on my 2016 and still running OEM rotors with a set of Powerstop Z36 pads

 

I didn't think our stock brakes were that bad. Haven't been bad when hauling (maybe even slightly above recommended weights). I'm at 60k miles on my 2018 w/ 33" tires for 59k of them. They are just starting to squeak so I'm starting to look. Had good results when I was younger with Green Stuff pads in my Integra/Civic/Supra days.

 

I am. The ebc yellows EAT rotors. Definitely plan on getting harder cryo rotors/aftermarket rotors.

Not sure about saying these are the best brakes ever lol Try doing multiple stops and get some heat in the system and let me know how that goes lol. I think for most use cases the simple rotor and ebc upgrade is plenty. The yellows do make noise but I dont mind. For ultimate stopping power and consistency theirs no replacement for more mass and surface area.

 

Been reading up on EBC and it looks like green is where it's at in my book. Green doesn't create the dust that Yellow does so that is a huge plus.

 

Did you end up getting the Green Pads? What rotors did you go with? aftermarket or OEM?

 

I have Greens on rear, less dust than my Yellows on fronts..
