In high school I used to deliver drugs (from a pharmacy) and my boss would let me take his minivan sometimes. That thing had a badass sound system and always had Bloodhound Gang in the CD changer.

I’ve had a number of friends lose to their own hands.
Never thought of taking my own.

My statement was based on a crazy ass life and folks constantly doubting I could make it through nutty situations.

    Tough one guys.

do I go for promotion or not.

    Cons:
    More responsibility
    Loss of independence
    Longer commute
    Not in the field anymore
In charge of 5 facilities instead of one

    Pros:
    25k more a year

That sounds like a deeply personal decision. That's quite a list of cons, but 25K is a solid increase in pay. Any other perks? Would you hate it? Do you need the money?

I would basically be overseeing those parks supervisors. The guys at the parks are solid and I’d really be able to sit back and solely deal with the larger issues, not be involved in the day to day stuff. I’d be able to take more time off in the summer without impacting operations. Maybe enjoy the 4th since all the parks I’d be overseeing don’t have swimming and limited picnic areas. They are more hiking parks.
I don’t “need” the money, but a bump in pay wouldn’t hurt either

Ah, so you know the guys that you'd be the boss over. Would they handle you as a boss well? Some get petty and feel passed over. If they are a good crew.... that makes being the boss so much easier.

Look at it this way, take the job, but don't adjust any spending. Bank as much of that extra 25K as you can, and retire ahead of schedule. Then you can live where you want.

I might have an issue with one, and ironically he’s the guy that initially hired me into the agency. We’ve had a great working relationship, and he attended my wedding. I’m just not sure how he’d take me becoming his boss.

I would still have to apply and interview for the position, but was actively recruited to apply by my district manager today, about 5 minutes after the position was posted.

Well, sounds like you know the potential problem guy. Is he the type you can have an active and honest discussion with? Can you just let him know you're thinking of applying and you are kind of concerned he might be resentful of you advancing into a leadership position he answers to? Not in those exact words of course, but can the topic be discussed?

Hope your district manager doesn't do you like one of the people at my work. Basic structure is Peons answer to manager and manager answers to director. The director told a peon to apply for the recently opened manager position after previous guy got smart and vacated. Director then did interviews and wound up hiring weirdo from outside the company over the person he told to apply for the job. Complete asshole move.

He would probably be ok as long as I left him alone to run his park as he sees fit, which is what I’d do anyways unless it conflicts with agency policy.

I’ve passed over these positions before, (much to my DM’s displeasure) but they’ve been to oversee “problem” parks. This group of parks is pretty much the ideal areas, pretty much run themselves. It’s where the senior guys used to go in their final years. Ironically, some younger guys just took over 3 of the parks, and won’t be leaving anytime soon. Ive got 15 left and the only guy I’d lose is the guy that hired me.

It kinda sounds like a change more than an actual list of cons at this point. If the impression I'm getting is correct, I would probably take it and bank the extra dollars if I could control myself!
