My comparison 2022 vs my 2021

I finally got a chance to test drive the new 2022 (SR5 TRD Sport). I took it our for about 30 minutes, 10 minutes in town and 20 minutes out of town. Here are my driving impressions:

-The drivetrain (engine and transmission) is really smooth and powerful.
-The cabin is really quiet, I loved how quiet the cabin was.
-Steering is "tight" (in a good way) and very responsive.
-The suspension is better and soaks up the road bumps better than my 2021 TRD Sport but I was expecting the new TNGA platform to be a little smoother. Don't get me wrong it is was better than the previous gen but in comparison to my wife's 2021 Highlander which is also built on the TNGA platform I was expecting a little better.
-When the turbos kick in it drinks fuel according to the gauges. On the 20 minute highway portion of my test drive which was a mix of hills and flat roads I averaged 11.5 L/100km. I completed the same loop in my 2021 directly after and got 12.5 L/100km according to the readout.
-My son liked the comfort of the rear seat better than the 2021
-I don't have any negative comments to make based on my short test drive.

Back story, I bought my 2021 Tundra without a test drive to replace my 2009 F150 as dealers simply didn't have anything on the lot to test drive. I purchased the Tundra for it's QDR and resale value, it's our third Toyota. What I dislike about my 2021 is the ride harshness and cabin noise, it is considerably louder and rides rougher than my 2009 F150, so much so my young kids noticed.

Ultimately I will replace the 2021 with another truck that is more refined, likely with a 2023 or 2024. The new 2022 Tundra is considerably more refined and definitely on my list of trucks to consider as a replacement.

This is an anecdotal story, but I ran into my first 2022 TRD Sport in the wild at the gas station last week. Told the guy it was a nice looking truck, to which he said "Thanks", but then when he saw my truck (2020 TRD Pro), he asked if I'd be willing to trade him. I laughed it off as I assumed he was joking, but he insisted he was being serious. Said he had test driven a 2021 before buying the 2022, but couldn't find any in stock once he was ready to pull the trigger, so he ended up ordering the 2022. He said he was disappointed in the 2022 in comparison to the 2021 he had test driven, especially when considering the premium he paid for it, and how he was unsure it had the same reliability of the 5.7 V8. Made me feel pretty good about pulling the trigger when I did. I'm sure this probably isn't the general consensus, but just found it interesting.

 

The 5.7 and body style of the 2.5 gen rules. I wouldn't have a 22 even if it had a 5.7 in it. That thing is definitely no chick magnet lol.

 

Agreed. A little too refined for me, but I bet it’ll grow on me. I think you’re smart to wait. It’s a considerably more complicated truck than the 2nd gens. I’m thinking way far ahead, but I don’t know if I’ll wind up in one or not. The whole waste gate issue seems peculiar to me, especially considering how on top of the ‘21 steering rack issues Toyota has been (something like 151 trucks actually affected, but notices sent out to everyone with a Tundra and Sequoia saying to bring them back if you had any steering work done in the time frame that the faulty machine was building the rack).

That's an interesting story. Sounds like he really settled. If he owns a TRD Sport and is interested in a Pro...those are very different trucks. I wonder what kind of 21 he drove? Even within the same model year, Sport models are built with different design purposes in mind compared to TRD ORs or Pros. Suspension is tuned differently and the drive modes are different. If I was interested in a TRD OR or TRD Pro, but settled for a TRD Sport...I would want to trade too. I don't mean to poo poo on Sport models. I'm just more of a off-road guy than a speed guy.

On a side note: Similar story but in the opposite direction for different reasons. I had a 2020 TRD Pro owner spend a few mins looking at my truck while we were both filling up on opposite sides of the same pump. He said his biggest beef with the TRD Pro was the lack of CRAWL & MTS and a factory locker and was thinking about putting a deposit down on a 22 TRD Pro. He said he upgraded from a Taco TRD Pro and didn't realized how spoiled he got using CRAWL, MTS, etc. 3rd Gens are still pretty rare here and I've had more conversations with fellow truck owners while filling up than I ever have before. lol.

The other thing that experience reminded me is how much I respect the fact that Toyota has such brand loyalty with its owners. He has had heard about the wastegate issues and asked if I had experienced any issues, etc. It was clear he had been following the news pretty closely. Now that I think back on them, the vast majority of my gas pump conversations are with other Toyota owners. haha

I have only seen 1 here in Miami so far. It was white and had some god awful black pieces that made it look even worse. From what I have read and videos I have seen, if correct, I think Toyota gave us less for more money. Less interior room, less bed space, no tow hook, no step bumper, no trans cooler, etc. But hey we did get a 14” High Def, 1040, Ultra dooper HD screen. I will be keeping mine for a while.

 

My impressions and opinions were regarding drivetrain, cabin noise, road noise and refinement. From my perspective all are greatly improved in the 3rd gen compared to my 2021. I love the fact that the Gen 2 Tundras are known for their quality, durability and reliability.

The exterior styling of the gen 2 is legendary and still puts a smile on my face. The exterior of the 2022, needs some refinement such as body coloured front moustache and door handles along with removing the chrome around the windows. These simple changes create a much nicer style, take a look at the 2023 Seqioua. I suspect the Tundra's styling will evolve as it's an easy update for Toyota to claim a mid cycle "refresh". Truthfully I hope a chrome delete is an option moving forward in 2023, fingers crossed!

Well put sir…like a lot of other things this truck too will grow on most people.

The mismatched pieces don’t help the look and the QC issues and early failure can be a turnoff…but I have also seen some Gawd/awful looking 2nd gens running around that made me wanna park mine and hide when I was driving my 2015

In my opinion if a 2nd Gen doesn’t have color matched pieces (Heritage Grill, body colored surround, body colored end caps) or if it’s one of those with some other weird color combinations then it’s not Great looking either.
It does have that ‘tough as nails, almost HD look…like a one piece robust sculpture than can drive through anything with its bulletproof engine but I say give them time to fix what we are seeing on the new truck.

I loved my 2nd Gen…made it mine and I love this 3rd gen also (and making it more mine).

Yes…we are paying ‘more’ for ‘less’ overall but in all honesty fellas…is there anything at this point in time (2021/2022) that we are getting more value for…or paying less for more? We are being raped (no pun intended) everywhere we look so I won’t single out Toyota cause it’s everywhere .

So…I will take my time and enjoy my extra 7 mpg’s, enjoy the refinement of the new ride and the unmatched bells and whistles that the 2nd gen didn’t have and continue to tastefully modify it for my uses

 

I think the new gen will be a great truck in about 3 or 4 years. They will work out the bugs, have a few improvements by then and the aftermarket products will be in full bloom.

But I am completely happy with my 2016. I purchased it used with 32k miles 2 years ago and cost was half of what a similar setup 3rd gen costs. Ive not driven the 3rd gen yet, but at the cost they go for and the teething issues, Toyota can keep it and sell to someone else.

 

I'm always amazed at how many truck buyers prioritize looks over capability.

 

Curious where you got the extra 7 mpg figure? From everything I've seen, it seems the real world difference in mpg is negligible.

 

Yeah…I have seen lots of those discussions on this too and honestly I can’t tell what mods are/aren’t being compared and if by the same folks on the 2 different generations but what I can tell you is that 5+ mpgs average isn’t negligible in my book.

Mine came from my 2015 TRD OR before modification (stock everything) / after (modifications lift kit, 34.5” tires and aftermarket wheels) to name the more egregious offenders . At best I averaged ~15 rounded up before and ~11-12 after

… compare to my 2022 TRD OR before (stock everything) / current stage of modification (34.5” tires only this far). Driving like my dad has gotten me in the 20-21 range at around 300-600miles on the truck but with my current 62lb 295’s I am down to 19…something I mentioned on another thread somewhere.
I only got the higher end mileage before modsto see if I could come close/surpass what the manufacturer said.

I personally didn’t buy the truck for mileage alone…a bunch of factors in addition to that (including getting a killer price on my 2015) but I am relishing in what I have nonetheless.

I feel it for all of those that have issues but willing to give them the benefit of the doubt to work it out.

 

This is really good info thanks. so 20.45 mpg (2022) versus 19 mpg (2021).
In all the online videos and reviews I have seen or read, I don't think anyone has provided this kind of info from;
Same driver, same temperature, same day. same driving technique.
Apples to Apples.

 

Everything I've been seeing has been showing it to be ~1mpg improvement for the 2022, and that's when trying to keep the turbos from kicking in too much. I think that's what the OP even said in this post - though my liters to gallons conversions are a little rusty.

 

I've seen several now. The 1794 in Army Green looks awesome to me. The fit and finish on the ones I've seen were very good. Not like some I've seen in the videos going around. The panaromic roof and interior changes are the best additions.

The 2022 supposedly has an external trans cooler. I didn't check it. I will look at the next one.

 

I'd say you can get low 20s if you keep your foot out of it. Best I could ever get out of a Toyota 5.7 was like 16....

If you stay in the turbos on these new trucks, they will do as bad or maybe worse. The same is true of the 3.5 ecofart.

 

My main issue with the 2022 is the mark ups people are seeing on them. I've seen $15,000 markups over MSRP.

 

I am looking for a serious answer for this, but why are folks that dislike the '22s obsessed with them to the point of posting on the gen 3 forums?

 

No disrespect to what the OP said/saw but do remember that was a short trip and relying solely on the computer…

I am talking about hundreds of miles utilizing both the computer and hand calculator to throw out outliers (my personal experience on owning both so I don’t know what else to tell you).

For me, I was really looking forward to getting the 22 when my 2020 lease was up. Toyota did a disservice with the 22. To me its a keeping up with the Joneses, just like their commercial for the Super Bowl and not going pass them. Comparing the SR5, which is what I get, they did nothing for me. Actually they took away from what I already have. To top it off its around $3000-3500 more and no discounts. If anything dealers are adding markups. But to really answer your question, because we can. Plus sometimes it get boring replying to lift, wheels, tires and oil threads.

 

Fair enough it was a short trip. I can speak to my 2021 as last week I put on 1600 km on a road trip to another province. Drove 800km's on the way there and averaged 11.5 l/100km (20.4 mpg) driving 105 kph (65 mph), on the way home (800km's) I got 12.2 l/100km (19.3 mpg) also driving 105 kph (65 mph). It was all highway, I have stock size (275/65 R18) dedicated snow tires on.

I am sure the 2022 will get better fuel economy but my main reason for purchasing the next gen will be for refinement. Specifically the drivetrain, handling and quiet cabin.

 

I actually like everything about the 2022 with the exception of the exterior styling.

 

The interior changes are always welcomed. But I have to say that everyone complained about the dated 2-2.5 gen interior but then for the 3rd gen they have an after though of a gauge cluster. Unless you get the fancy digital one. And lets face it people will complain soon enough about the dated 3rd gen interior when its been around as long as the previous gen. I have always like sunroofs/pana roofs but I don't care to own one, even though I have owned several they stay closed 99.9% of the time.

 

Not sure if this is in reference to me, but I honestly don't dislike the 3rd Gens, they really put everything into the truck that I've been wanting for years. I'm just a bit disappointed that it seems there has been a drop in reliability in ALL next generation Toyotas - which bums me out as a life-long Toyota guy.
